"We have long had the goal of making every person on the planet a comics fan. With Amazon's help, this crazy goal is more possible than ever before," wrote co-founder, David Steinberger, in an open letter on the ComiXology website.

"ComiXology will retain its identity as an Amazon subsidiary and we're not anywhere near done 'taking comics further'."

The app's back end already powers similar offerings from both Disney-owned Marvel and Warner's DC Comics.

The possibility of such a sale had been mooted by Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnson two weeks prior, reflecting on recent changes to the ComiXology heirarchy.

"ComiXology is repeatedly the No.1 gross revenue app on iOS, especially on Wednesdays," he wrote, noting that the company's international expansion had gone down particularly well in "India, China and much of Europe and South America".

An Amazon acquisition would not only strengthen Amazon's comics distribution on mobile platforms, but also soothe any competitive abrasion between the two companies, while creating "an effective digital comic book monopoly" for the parties concerned, he suggested. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 12, 2014.
