The Golf is ahead of the Ford Fiesta (171,605 vehicles sold), the Volkswagen Polo (163,818) and the Opel Corsa (149,553).
All of these models have seen their sales drop dramatically compared to the first half of 2011, the Golf’s sales declining by 6.2 per cent.
Among the ten bestselling carmakers in Europe, Audi and Mercedes are the only ones to show an increase in sales since last year, by 4.9 per cent and 4.5 per cent.
The figures, released by Jato on July 19, encompass sales in 30 European countries. — AFP/Relaxnews
