Vodka created in homage to San Francisco

June 01, 2011

Absolut SF pays homage to San Francisco in the line’s city-inspired series that also includes New Orleans and Boston. — AFP picLOS ANGELES, June 1 — If the city of San Francisco were to be bottled, it would taste of grape, dragon fruit and papaya — exotic flavours that capture the unique mix of cultures, ethnicities and culinary heritage of a thriving, colourful city.

At least, that’s what one vodka maker thinks.

In the latest edition to a city-series that already includes New Orleans, Los Angeles, Boston, and Brooklyn, Absolut launched a bottle that pays homage to San Francisco’s diversity and culture yesterday. The new flavour is meant to reflect the Napa Valley and Sonoma, and the rich contributions of the Asian and Hispanic communities.

The vodka maker has also enlisted the help of prominent local artists like Miguel Migs, a ‘sonic ambassador,’ fashion designer Christopher Collins, artist and painter Erik Otto, and Kevin Rose, founder of social news website Digg.

Locals and fans of the city are invited to submit photos, drink recipes and ideas that celebrate San Francisco on the bottle’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/ABSOLUT. At the end of the campaign, the Absolut Capitol of SF will be awarded to the neighbourhood with the most user support and participation. Winners will receive a special placement tab on Facebook and a mural in their honour.

Absolut isn’t the first to name their vodka after a great city. St. Petersburg Lux Vodka is named in honour of its home city, and is made from an old Russian recipe.

Another recent vodka launch inspired by unconventional flavours is Cupcake Vodka, which launched in April.

Absolut SF is available across the US at major retailers, bars and restaurants. — afprelaxnews.com
