Hospices de Beaune wine auction on Sunday, November 18.PARIS, Nov 16 – France’s former first lady will preside over the 152nd edition of the
The profits from the sales will go to the Hospices de Beaune (which finances the region’s hospitals and retirement homes), Fondation Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and Fondation Idée.
An annual event since 1851, the auction of Burgundy wines boasts an international following as it enables the valuation of prestigious wines.
Organised by Christie’s since 2005, the event will auction off the 2012 vintage from the Hospices de Beaune’s own vineyards. Whites and reds are sold in oak barrels, dubbed “pièces” at the event.
Since Christie’s got involved, the auction had a record year in 2009, when 799 barrels were up for sale, and the 2011 edition, with 765 barrels on sale, grossed €5.4 million (RM16.5 million).
The average price per barrel was €6,915, with the President’s pièce, presented by Inès de la Fressange, fetching €110,000.
This year, 111 barrels of white wine and 401 barrels of red wine will be auctioned, and the transition of the sale in recent years from a wholesale market to a retail market should keep the record books intact, in spite of the expected high quality of the 2012 vintage, thanks to a warm and dry month of August in the wake of a cold spring. – AFP-Relaxnews
