New Simon Cowell show on hunt for UK’s best recipe

LONDON, June 10 — TV mogul Simon Cowell has become the latest celebrity to launch a new competitive cooking show, this time looking for the best original home-cooked recipe in the UK.

In a casting call for “Food, Glorious Food!,” producers describe the show as the “biggest ever search for Britain’s best-loved recipe,” open to anyone. The grand prize? A cash pot of £20,000 (RM98,507) in addition to seeing their winning recipe line the grocery store shelves of upmarket British retailer Marks & Spencer.

The concept is a blatant riff on a Canadian show, “Recipe to Riches,” which likewise issued a call to Canadians for their best original recipes in seven categories, including appetisers, cakes, sweets and entrées.

Winning recipes were turned into commercial products for President’s Choice, a premium in-house food label for the country’s major grocery retailer Loblaws.

The show, hosted by “The Bachelor” star Jesse Palmer and judged by food TV celebrity Laura Calder, aired on The Food Network Canada last year and returns for a second season this year.

Instead of multiple winners, however, the UK version will crown one single winner for the best British recipe.

Meanwhile, details of Cowell’s (picture) show come days after it was revealed that Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson will be teaming up for another US-based competitive cooking show which is also likewise holding casting calls for competitors. — AFP/Relaxnews
