TM posts RM217.8m in pre-tax profit

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) pre-tax profit in the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2009 rose 57.67 per cent to RM217.761 million from a pre-tax loss of RM138.116 million in the same quarter last year.

Revenue in the third quarter saw an increase of RM39.065 million or 1.89 per cent from RM2.062 billion in the preceding quarter, mainly due to higher revenue from data services, internet and multimedia, other telecommunication related services and non-telecommunication related services net of declining voice of revenue.

Meanwhile, the group’s profit after tax and minority interests (Patami) increased by 208 per cent to RM179.1 million when compared to a loss of RM165.8 million in the corresponding quarter of 2008.

This was mainly attributed to an unrealised exchange gain on translation of foreign currency borrowings of RM45.5 million as compared to a loss of RM195.7 million in the same quarter of 2008, the company said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia today.

For the nine-month period, TM posted a pre-tax profit of RM667.97 million on revenue of RM6.335 billion.

TM said the group expects the business environment for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2009 to remain challenging.

Commenting on the High Speed Broadband (HSBB) project, the company said it was on track to commercially launch the retail service in four areas, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bangsar, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, by the end of first quarter 2010.

“To date, the physical work on four exchanges has been completed whilst work is in progress at 44 others out of 95 nationwide, to be covered by the initial rollout of the HSSB services,” TM said.

Meanwhile, in providing an update on the agreements by the company in Iskandar Malaysia, TM said it was continuing the deployment and implementation of the telecommunications infrastructure, particularly for broadband in the identified areas within it.

TM is also continuing the deployment and implementation of HSBB infrastructure in Nusajaya. - Bernama
