KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 — Maxis Bhd today became the first communications company in Malaysia to deploy High-Speed Packet Access+ (HSPA+) technology for its wireless broadband service.
The incorporation of this next-generation data transmission capability into Maxis’ existing 3G network will enable subscribers surfing the Internet in selected areas in the Klang Valley and Johor Baharu to experience significant improvement in download speeds.
The new technology is available now to select users on a trial basis, and following new announcements, will become widely available to Maxis customers during 2010, the company said in a statement today.
“Maxis seeks to enrich the lives of its customers through bringing them the most advanced and innovative technologies,” said executive vice president and head of network and technology, Mark Dioguardi.
“Maxis’ implementation of HSPA+ in Malaysia is a positive commitment in this direction. For the past 12 to 18 months, we have substantially increased the coverage, download/upload speeds and reliability of our wireless broadband service,” he said.
“HSPA+ is yet another Malaysia first for Maxis to further improve broadband services,” he added.
Dioguardi said the capability of HSPA+ will meet Malaysians’ ever-increasing demand for higher speeds in “accessing the digital realm on the go, making browsing the Internet, video-streaming, uploading and downloading of high-resolution files enjoyable and seamless”.
Built on a new radio modulation technique called 64QAM, HSPA+ represents the latest form of advancement in 3G/HSPA network capabilities, following High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (a kind of downlink speed enhancement) and High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (a type of uplink speed improvement).
With HSPA+, Maxis’ wireless broadband network can support peak rated network speeds of 21Mbps although users can expect speeds of up to 10 to 15Mbps in environments with good coverage.
This equates to a doubling of current download speeds in certain areas of the network, the company said.
According to Maxis, the company is well-poised to maintain its lead in mobile communications via its strategic expansion of HSPA+ coverage in Malaysia in phases from December 2009 to 2011.
As Maxis moves forward into 2010, plans are to continue investing in robust and value-rich enhancements of customer experience through leading-edge technology, it said. — Bernama

I had maxis broadband for close 1.5 years, and it is very, very, very, very, VERY slowwwww.......
From a promise of speeds up to 3.6mbps, and having to pay for this speed, I was dismayed to get only 80kb to 250kb on any regular day. Yes, in case you think it is a misprint, let me repeat. The speed is only 80KB to 250KB. KB is a whole lot different from MB, you know. I have used Maxis own speedtest to test this, so there's no denying. I have NEVER gotten 1MB before.
So, all this empty talk about speeds and technology is just hogwash. When Maxis first launched their 3G, they also promised high speeds too. I was taken in from their marketing blitz and got conned big time.
Having to pay for a certain level of service and getting 10 times less is a con job to me in my books. My mother taught me that when small and she's darn right correct, perfectly on the spot, right on. It is cheating.
