Customs expects to double collection through GST

LAWAS, Feb 2 — The Customs Department expects its tax collection to increase twofold with the implementation of goods and services tax (GST) in the middle of 2011.

Director-General Datuk Seri Ibrahim Jaapar said the estimate was based on the expected increase in the number of businesses required to be pay taxes from last year until the GST implementation.

About 56,000 businesses had been registered for the purpose of tax collection by the customs and the figure could rise up to 300,000 when GST was to be implemented, he said.

For last year, he said, the customs managed to exceed its target with a total collection reaching RM25.9 billion.

The anticipated higher collection through GST meant that the department would have to enhance the capability of its human resources, he added. — Bernama
