KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — Amid widespread speculation over his political future, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has criticised his own party Umno for contributing to race relations problems.
He also urged Umno to engender a more fair-minded administration, and lead the Malays towards having better race relations with non-Malays.
Speaking to the mass-circulation Chinese-language Sin Chew Daily in his most extensive interview since resigning as a member of the Cabinet recently, Zaid also called for more open debates over "sensitive issues”.
He also pointed out that the results of the March general election were a clear message from the people that they wanted change, but the government had failed to change.
The former minister in the Prime Minister's Department, who resigned in protest against recent Internal Security Act arrests, said he had joined the government for the wrong reasons.
"I became a minister for the wrong reason. That reason was reform, but I have failed.
"I thought they would no longer use the ISA. I thought the government would be more open to the rule of law and the constitution, but I was wrong."
There has been, in recent weeks, intense speculation over the political future of Zaid, but the Umno man did not address the issue in his interview with the Chinese-language daily.
But he was highly critical of the "culture of fear" in Malaysia, which he appeared to blame on Umno and the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.
"When we face an issue we cannot discuss it, we cannot debate it. We only use fear or we take to the streets. That is not the way things are done in a mature society," he said.
He said the leadership style of "those with political power" had resulted in race relations being a sensitive issue even after 50 years of independence.
The former minister said race politics had been constantly used because it was easy to get support that way.
"Umno feels that it is a party needed by the Malays. Umno leaders keep telling the Malays that they are constantly in danger and therefore need Umno.
"They always feel that only they know what is good for the Malays."
He said there was no need for "real Malays" to feel any fear or insecurity.
The real question, he said, was that too many people did not understand or respect the historical fact that for the last 100 years, the Malays, Chinese and Indians have contributed to nation-building.
He said Malaysia's status today as the 19th largest trading nation in the world was due to the contributions of all races.
Zaid also felt that under today's circumstances, a "May 13" race riot is not likely to happen again.
"I am not afraid of the Chinese being smart, because I too am smart. We keep talking about the Chinese having more shops and how we should be worried. The fact is we should not be worried. We should think of how to catch up," he said.
He added that it was no longer necessary for "one party to represent one race" anymore.

What Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said is true. He is not afraid of Non-Malays being smarter, for he is also smart!
It is just like preparing for the Olympics: practise, practise, practise until you arebetter than your competitors: do not shut out your competitors!

That was long ago. We were friends. We goaded each other to do better. We shared our secrets. We trusted each other. It was good until the politicians spoilt it for us. The major components of BN must shoulder the blame - UMNO, MCA and MIC - they preach unity yet one wonders how this is possible when UMNO is only interested in Hidup Melayu; MCA is championing the rights of the Chinese; MIC is ... honestly, I have no clue what MIC was doing. In any case, every day that passed since 69, the races were torn further apart. Of course, in the process, UMNO became supreme and the rest of the component parties in BN lost their say.
Today, the people are more split than ever. The only race Malaysians know by instinct is the colour of their skin. The races of yesteryears where everyone struggles to finish first is no longer relevant. There will be some people who do not need to run this race (cronyism) but still win; there will be some who despite not finishing first, would still be declared winners (affirmative action); there will be the rest who will continue to slog but have no idea where the finishing line is.
"Yes, we once were friends" ... I still hear people say. Mostly, it is to defend themselves against charges of racial gotism, or it is simply to endear themselves to the race whose word hold sway whether or not you are going to get your rice bowl filled. And that , fellow Malaysians, is not just hypocritical, but truly sad.

I hope Mr Zaid Ibrahim continues to voice his opinions.

That is why I say UMNO and BN formula of divide and rule only causes Malaysia to lose out and in the end the Rakyat suffers.

Eunuchs tend to be very extreme in their actions, easily slighted, have an inferiority complex and deceitful, the total opposite of a TRUE MALAY GENTLEMAN.
I pray for the day that our Nation will one day be governed again by a TRUE MALAY GENTLEMAN.

If you must know why Chinese have more shops, pls also mentioned, more pirated VCDs, etc is simply becuase we don't have a choice. I like to be the Head of Immigration, Head of Post Office, Head of Police, Head of Information, Head of any damm Government office. Ada chance? So, don't make it as thought its some kind of magic. There's none! Pure hard work. Many have failed too, so what? move on lah. Forget about handout, spoon fed. There's no more free lunch! Period.

All peace-loving Malaysians of all origins will surely be grateful for your enlightened perspective and view of the plight of our multi-racial country. We, the people, have been torn apart and divided by ugly racists and racial bigots who want to continue to plunder the wealth of the nation and to enrich themselves and their cronies.
We thank you Zaid for speaking up for all Malaysians and we pray that God Almighty will help us and you in your noble cause, to rid this land of ours, of plunderers, robbers and unjust corrupt leaders.

It seems some of these fellows use Bomoh Sakai (from Perak) to overpower the PM and others whom they hate or detest. Zaid suffered as he found himself UNable to think when he attended Cabinet Meetings.

Daniel, the reasons why chinese subcontractors can get the job done. I'm not saying tat Malay sub contractors are no good but is all about the better man wins. If u don't get the contract do you start blaming others being bias, unfair? U shld strive to do better next time. Tats should be right spirit. In addition, a lot of you may have heard stories tat when a Malay contractor gets a contract, they just sub-contract it out most of the time as a easy way of making money....just continue to get the contract and the money will come. Opportunities are then lost for them to acquire the skills and be competitive and to be sustainable. There are also other stories of this situation changing and bravo to those who see the light.
As for the rest who praises Zaid, pls also consider this. His law firm is the biggest is Malaysia and he has made his money through the same networks and connections to get the jobs. But on the flip side he has also contributed by creating a national champion in the legal profession and by doing this, it has created and provided many opportunities to many talented Malaysians of all race. I'm hoping that Zaid is really doing this for every RAKYAT and not for some personal gains....

"No, I'm not afraid of the Chinese being smart because I too am smart!" Throw off that humiliating feudal yoke clamped on your backs by all the UMNO dinosaurs and Mahathir's personal dilemma who have been riding you back into the Middle-Ages for their own obscene riches. You do this and your real betrayers UMNO and their collaborators MCA, MIC, Gerakan will be trampled into the dust of history forever. And we will have a New Malaysia.

Want to know why investment and money is flowing out of Malaysia? Simple, all local universities have quotas where 70% must be bumiputras. So if the remaining balance of qualified non-bumis whom are good in their studies cannot get into local universities, what will their parents do?? Well, sent them to overseas!!! Let's say I am a parent and want to sent my child to UK to study Law, well I will be approximately spending bout RM30K per year on my child, for a bachelor degree to complete is bout 3 years and another RM100K is outflow to UK to finance my child's education. I have 3 kids - 1 in University of Sussex and another in London School of Economics and one daugther in KDU. My total expenditure is bout RM80K per annum on 3 of my children. Now, I know of many parents whom are my friends who invest as much education for their kids as well. Let's say every year 5,000 parents of non-bumi status send their kids to overseas, we will have bout RM80K X 5,000 = RM400 million of outflow in investments to UK or other countries like Australia. So if investment outflow is going out of the country is more then it is coming to Malaysia, I am not suprised.
This is due to the NEP policy also adopted in education as well and loans provided and home purchase discounts plus bumi-share allocations and many-many taxpayers money spend by umnoputras which have gone into a waste of billions of ringgits. Govt should build more colleges for all races instead of having 70% bumi quotas in education. The standard of education have drop and most asean students like china, indonesia, singapore, thailand prefers to study in UK colleges rather then come to Malaysia due to this bumi-quota NEP allocation which deteorates and retards the Malaysian education system. As long as we do not abolish the NEP policy, there will be no end to investment going out of Malaysia.
Best of all, most non-bumis that have studied in overseas, do not want to come back to Malaysia to work causing a shortage of skilled labour in the industry due to all opportunities given to Bumis as the Govt requires all Malaysian companies to have at least 30% workforce to be bumiputras as well.
The outdated NEP policy is destroying Malaysia and I thank Anwar that he have raise this issue among the bumis and non-bumis to discontinue this stupid policy. The NEP is use to enrich only a few UMNOs not the poor. Just to determine how much the damage of NEP did to our education system - every year we have RM400 million flowing out of Malaysia as parents sends their child to overseas to study instead of having their childeren to study in Malaysia. And our university is rank the lowest among the last 50 universities in the world - ranking is bout 183 while Singapore University is rank 32 up by 151 notches compare to University Malaya.

The reason why FDI is not coming in as well as our own TNC is investing else where is that simple, the returns is better in overseas compare to Malaysia. Stick to the basics. There's a drop in FDI for Malaysia is a sign of less confidence in the Malaysia economy. The growth rate and spending power of Malaysians have drop and workforce productivity is also falling due to NEP. Just imagine 60% of the population is bumiputra and all of them depends on handouts and bail by the federal govt while the remaining 40% of the non-bumi workforce are also demotivated to work harder as the more they work - the more poorer are they. So, NEP is descouraging others to work harder. Even the poor bumis are less bothered to work harder as all the UMNO top cronies gets the biggest cake. Recently, BursaMalaysia Berhad have asked our govt to drop the NEP 30% bumi equity quota in order to IPO any companies. There is not many IPOs in Malaysia this year due to the NEP bumi-quota problem, and BursaMalaysia Bhd registered a drop in pre-tax profit also. Now if it is not the govt policy of adopting the NEP formula, then what is preventing the FDIs from coming in??

Another bigger problem is the education, most local grads cannot speak good english therefore prevent MNCs from Europe to invest in Malaysia. Just think, a country with commodities of 1,000 times more then Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore but have less then 20% BN reserve and international reserves as recently announce by Najib. Our country is full of rubber, palm oil, Petrol oil, fisheries and land bank and with a population of 26 million compare to Hong Kong (6 million) and Singapore (5 million) and yet our earning power and bank reserves is less then 20% of Hong Kong and Singapore!! What does that tell you?? Our very own TNCs do not have the capability or financial means to invest overseas compare to TNC/MNCs from other countries.
Unless the NEP is abolished and a new agenda to eradicate poor irregardless of race is adopted, our country will continue to fall behind the rest of the world. As we know, Malaysia is the only country in the world that adopts NEP for their own citizens by quota by race. Name me another country that does the same to their own citizens?? We should start a new forum called "DROP NEP" policy and I am sure more investments will come into Malaysia and our very own MNCs is improved.

Now we should just sit down and expect the normal responses from UMNO denouncing what zaid has said is tantamount to DERHAKA kepada (1) Party, (2) Bangsa, (3) Agama and lastly not forgetting (4) Negara.
