Mukhriz follows Dr M, no to abolishing Bumiputera quota

ALOR STAR, Oct 29 - The abolishment of the 30 per  cent Bumiputera equity in public listed companies will only  further weaken the economy of the Malays, Umno Youth executive  council member Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said today.

He said that now was not the time to propose the abolishment of the 30 per cent equity for the Malays, instead, it should be  to improve their economy.

"Their achievement, the most is only 22 per cent, but has now  dropped to 18 per cent. So, is it apt to abolish the policy," he  said in response to MCA vice-president Datuk Liow Tiong Lai who  suggested that the condition for Bumiputera equity in  public-listed companies to be abolished.

Mukhriz, who is also Jerlun Member of Parliament, said there  were still many objectives in the New Economic Policy which had  not been achieved and efforts should be made to enhance the  competitiveness of the Malays in the economics field.

"So long as the Bumiputera are not comfortable and confident  with their capabilities, the policy cannot be abolished," he  added. - Bernama
