PUTRAJAYA, Nov 12 - Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today suggested the Internal Security Act (ISA) should be used against corrupt Umno members.
He also backed Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the best candidate in the race for the Umno deputy presidency while suggesting that the other two challengers are involved in money politics.
"That's a good way to use ISA, not for some writer who writes nonsense," he said of corrupt Umno members and also in an apparent reference to Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin, who was released recently from ISA detention.
Dr Mahathir, who has become increasingly vocal in recent weeks, said there is "a strong possibility that Umno deputy presidential candidates are involved in money politics."
"Because some people who were at the bottom during the first week, suddenly shot up," said Mahathir when asked to comment whether the contest for the Umno deputy presidency is tainted with money politics.
The contest for the party's deputy presidency is now a three way tussle between Muhyiddin, who garnered 92 nominations, Datuk Seri Ali Rustam and Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib.
Ali and Muhammad received the minimum nominations, 39 on the last weekend of the Umno divisional meetings. Ali now has 48 nominations while Muhammad, 45.
"Everybody knows that Umno leaders are using money, when the election comes, the people will reject them. Not everyone is but the majority is. So you can be an Umno leader, but the people will reject you. When we have lost, there is no point in becoming Umno president," said Mahathir.
"Who wants to elect somebody who bought his way up," he added
"When you know somebody who has got very bad history and still getting support. That history I think has relevance to the support," he said when asked about the three cornered fight for the deputy presidency.
However he said among all the three candidates, Muhyiddin is the most qualified.
He recommended that all party leaders be investigated and removed from the party if found guilty.
"We need to clean up the party. Now you see the opposition is very quiet and Umno is seen as a very corrupt party, so opposition will talk about how they are not corrupt," said Mahathir.
He said that Umno leaders who are involved in money politics should be thrown into prison.

I think everyone just want ISA on their side to have "preventive" measures against threat to themselves rather than a threat to the country.
ISA should really be reviewed on what the purposes are.
It's not for "protection", "kill freedom of expression", etc.
If Dr M can walks freely with all the things he has said & done for the last few months, I don't see why anyone else deserves ISA more than he does.
However, BN will never be bothered to review or discuss it because they can't lead the country for a single hour without ISA.

So what you are saying is that there should be another way for the top guns in UMNO to frame each other with money politics. If that is the case, then the Home Minister (and dare I say the PM) has the prerogative to arrest anyone for money poliltics under the ISA if they remotely suspect that they are a threat to their position. That would surely be a welcome source of "revenue" for the lucky man who would be Home Minister.
As far as the rakyat is concerned, as long as there is rampant money politics in UMNO, then NO ONE is to be trusted - including the current candidates for the top UMNO positions. After all, along with position comes MORE money at their disposal for buying votes.
So now we have another foolhardy suggestion to curb money politics BECAUSE the simplest solution - open and direct election - would be too much of a risk for EVERYONE in office. It's just unthinkable to close the ONLY way these people have of reaching the upper rungs of the ladder.

Dr. M's comment on ISA just about confirm that the ISA has indeed deviated beyond recognition from its originally intended purpose. Far from its application on perpetuators of actions deemed detrimental to national security as its name implies, it has become a useful tool for all forms of misdeamors against the interest of the ruling party, imagined or otherwise. The way it is going, somebody may soon suggest the ISA be applied on traffic offenders.

mr Mahathir, in my view, has a good point. It is difficult to make a case against the briber and the taker. Neither of them will step forward to admit their guilt. And until we do, using money to buy whatever one desires, especially public positions and government contracts, is going to continue unabated.
"Chop off a rooster's head to frighten the monkeys" is a saying that is the same as, in this case here - using the ISA to put away a few big time corrupt politicians in Kamunting will act as a deterrent to other would-be bribers and takers. Somewhat like Hudud law I suppose. An extreme case no doubt but perhaps an effective psychological deterrent against corruption.
Useful if we want really to be a clean, decent, morally upright people overnight. Only question is who will guard the "guardians" of the ISA? Does our situation warrant it? Is our situation critical enough to be a threat now to the well-being of the Nation?
There is no perfect answer. Perhaps the question for any good ruler in this time is find what works. Will Using the ISA to detain corrupt individuals work in stopping this insidious rot?
