PETALING JAYA, Nov 18 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today admitted that the absence of the nation’s top two leaders from the country at the same time was unusual but he said it shows the country is stable.
“This is rather unusual because of the Apec Summit I have to attend. Normally one of us will be in the country, but this is unavoidable. In any case we will be in close communication so that we can relay instructions,” said Najib today after launching the Asia Pacific Regional Water Conference 2008 here.
“It’s a mark of a nation that is stable,” he added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi is currently in Uzbekistan for a four-day official visit, while his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak will leave for the 16th Apec Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM) in Lima, Peru, today.
Abdullah is scheduled to return on Nov 21, while Najib returns in early December.
Yesterday, DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang asked why the 30-year standing rule that both the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister should not be out of the country at the same time was being broken.
On the possibility of a contest for the top two posts in Wanita Umno, Najib hoped that all parties should realise that the wing must continue to be strong.
“There are two views, one is in support of transition and the other asking for it to be hastened. Since there are two different opinions they have to look for solutions,” said Najib, “and one way is to negotiate, failing which, it’s up to both parties to decide.”
“Whatever decision they make, they must ensure that they do not compromise their ability to help strengthen the party,” he added.
Wanita Umno head Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz had agreed to step down in June, three months after the party polls, when her deputy Datuk Shahrizat Jalil would take over the movement’s leadership.
Shahizat has qualified to contest for both top posts in the wing.
