KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 – Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin said tonight that 99% of the rumours he reports on his website eventually turn out to be true.
Defending himself from a caller on a special interview with Riz Khan on satellite television station Al Jazeera who asked why he persisted in writing about rumours, he said time and time again he had been proven right with his stories.
“I have always been told that two things sell and that is sex and politics. And sex involving politics sells even more,” he quipped. He also denied the perception that Malaysia Today was an opposition mouthpiece, pointing out that he had been critical of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) as well.
Raja Petra added that he would also not consider playing a role in government if PR succeeded in toppling Barisan Nasional (BN).
“I do not wish to be in government. I wish to be in a pressure group. I have joked that if Pakatan forms the government I will then join Umno,” he said.
Besides Raja Petra, the other guests on the show were playwright Jo Kukathas and journalist Kee Thuan Chye.
All three guests offered their respective views on a gamut of issues from censorship and the media to the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar also joined the discussion by telephone and made a stout defence of the ISA.
Offering the government’s condolences to the people of India over the recent Mumbai attacks, he justified the continued existence of the ISA by saying the law was the reason why Malaysia had not suffered any major terrorist attacks.
He also contended that it was only what he described as a vocal minority of Malaysians who were against the ISA while the majority wanted safety and order in society.
Kukathas responded, however, to the minister’s arguments by pointing out that most of those who were ever arrested under the ISA were not terrorists.

Kindly let us informed how many terrorist you have arrested lately under the ISA beside RPK , Teresa and the cute reporter ?
BTW, taking about the reporter, you forgot to tell Riz Khan that you also make ISA arrest to protect . It would be most convincing argument to keep the ISA for another 100 years. BTW thank you for lighting up our day with your joke when we are down.

malaysia being declared as islamic country may continue to require ISA look to have some justifications ...
the arresting of reporter, opposition man etc is just to make up 'multiracial/ multireligion' composition in ISA detainees camp ?

I followed up with a second question, which is, what then is the purpose of having legislated such an "unfair act"? Invariably the answers were: "I don't know".
The actual purpose of the ISA is to allow detention of suspected (in fact mostly known terrorists but lacking solid evidence) terrorists which then gives the police the opportunity to interrogate the individuals without fearing that these terrorists might just escape their clutches via the court system. The ISA also serves the purpose to keep the suspect terrorist from furthering his aim to kill/maim innocent citizens.
It cannot be denied that the ISA was instrumental in helping the police to fight the communists terrorists in our country and bringing peace to the country. However the ISA has been abused by the modern day politicians to shut up (no pun intended) their opponents. Thus the need to review the ISA and prevent further abuse. But it should not be removed entirely. It should be retained for the sake of keeping the peace especially when we have a more insidious form of modern terrorism arising from religious fanaticism - which probably is more difficult to contain than the communist ideology.
Then there is also the poker faced Barisan Nasional politicians who regularly terrorize Malaysian citizens by issuing racial threats, raising the spectre of ethnic cleansing ala the ghost of May13, threatening the NGOs with the ISA etc etc.
So we should keep the ISA. And we should use it to protect ourselves, the right thinking citizens of our country, from being terrorized by the BN politicians and cowed into submission by their threats. That would return the ISA to its original purpose - to protect Malaysian citizens from terrorism ...BN Terrorists!

Benjamin Franklin once said " They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
I'd rather have liberty. Syed Albar should be locked for his own safety.

I believe the majority of Malaysians are mature enough to respect any opinions diametrically opposed to theirs. There remains many issues that separates the country but every one of them can be easily resolve if rationality and impartiality are applied in the resolution. For example, Datuk Mukhriz proposal on a unified education system is correct if seen from a neutral perspective. Yet many rejected it outright for their own reasons. Caught in the midddle are those who find the vernacular schools too parochial and the government schools overly dominated by Malays.
The solution would be for the government to re-invent the National schools in the mould of the private schools to attract moderate parents who wish for a progressive education for their children. Calling for the use of ISA or Sedition Acts on Mukhriz is ridiculous and an insult to moderates like me. Therefore, instead of resorting to silencing dissenting views, discuss issues openly (not in the bedroom as proposed by a prominent politician ), rationally and with maturity. The media's responsibility here is to give room to mature opposing views instead of the often reporting of opinions which are insulting and childish.

Having said that its nice to see people like Saudara JFK, K Das participating with their moderate views, devoid of expletives and the blame game, does make for mature discussion on the way forward.

In all 3 cases where ISA could have been used, the government has failed. Instead, they use ISA on opposition, journalists and the man on the street. And Syed Hamid called his piece of rubish law a success?

I hope all of us will despise any political party that supports such immature Malaysians. These the real hypocritical culprits that is dragging Malaysia down. But can we stop them?
