KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 - Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed joined the roiling debate on race relations by declaring there was no such thing as Ketuanan Melayu, or Malay Supremacy because racial parity had not been achieved yet.
He also said that Malaysians were not yet ready for freedom of speech, while he also expressed doubts about Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s leadership abilities.
Speaking on a special interview with Riz Khan on satellite television station Al-Jazeera, he said that Malays were in fact, the underdogs.
"There is no such thing as Ketuanan Melayu. We are the underdog.
"The shoe-polisher is not the Tuan (master). The man who pays you is the Tuan. I used to have a Chinese driver, he called me Tuan," he quipped.
Dr Mahathir defended the Malay affirmative action policies in Malaysia despite the fact that Malays formed the majority of the country, whereas affirmative action in other countries were implemented to help minorities.
"It is not about majority or minority. It is to address the disparity.
"The Chinese dominate the economy but the majority is poor and we need to bring them up to achieve parity," he said.
Having been in office for over two decades, Malaysia's longest serving Prime Minister added that the stronger presence of the Malays in the political field was to balance out the dominance of the Chinese in the economy.
He also added that there was nothing to stop the country from having a non-Malay Prime Minister so long as "he has the support of the majority."
When Khan suggested that the system was skewed to the Malays, Dr Mahathir disagreed, saying "it is not skewed, it is in the constitution."
Dr Mahathir also insisted that he was a Malay and not an Indian. Khan had implied that Dr Mahathir had tried to deny his Indian ancestry in the past.
"There is a lot of foreign blood in this country... we are at the crossing point between the East and West," Mahathir replied, adding that he is Malay by definition.
He also expressed concerns that current Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak might not step up to the premiership after the March Umno party polls despite winning the presidency unconstested.
Dr Mahathir had recently said that his successor and current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi may choose to stay on as PM despite not being Umno president, which he claims will be to the detriment of the party and country.
"Najib has not shown any strength in the political field. He is more a follower than a leader and he must change that," Dr Mahathir explained.
Khan then asked if this "change" meant a reversion to "Mahathirism."
"Mahathirism... I do not know what that is," was the elder statesman's reply.
He rejected the idea that his rule was autocratic but merely "sensible" due to the fact that Malaysia is "prone to instability" as it is a multiracial society. He further suggested that Mahathirism was synonymous with economic development instead.
On this point, he also criticised the level of openness practised by the current administration, stating that the country is not ready for such liberalisation.
"They say it is good to be more open but it is premature. The people do not understand freedom of speech and it has caused racial tension," he said.
He told Khan that in his tenure as Prime Minister, such matters were discussed between leaders behind closed doors. He concurred with the suggestion that racial sentiments were more heated today than during his premiership as "now, the different races are at each other's throats.”

So he thinks freedom of speech is immature? Then is it right to stifle it by detaining those who oppose hi, and shutting the mouths of every freedom fighter using aggressive means?
Mahathir can try to justify his dictatorship-like actions all he wants, but it was and still is very wrong and goes against fundamental human rights.

On education, do you think the chinese will send their children overseas if they can study locally? Everytime they fail the quota system even if their results out shine others. It is not on merit. Brain drain is the conclusion.

and for the pass decades you have been trying to 'achieve to parity' and if it didnt work out, change it!!!and not continuing it.
Even little kids know to correct their mistakes if they fail their exams at the first time, they will try to be better in the next exam by correcting their mistakes.
I am suprise why can't an adult with a sound mind did the same? Are you--an imbecile??

Mahathir's contempt for the ordinary Malaysian and especially the Malays, is so obvious. Malaysians, by his reckoning are not ready for anything but to be led by him.
Under his type of leadership, the Malays will not ever be able to stand on their own two feet. Mahathir has long concluded that his followers are too stupid and incapable to ever stand on their own two feet.
---------
"There is a lot of foreign blood in this country... we are at the crossing point between the East and West," Mahathir replied, adding that he is Malay by definition.
We cannot choose to be born into one particular race. Why does Mahathir seek to deny his Indian ancestry? He claims he is a Malay by definition. Since the definition is purely arbitrarily and artificial, he cannot have been a Malay by birth. So now the Malays do not ever know who they are since one can be a Malay by definition? He is right in one respect, there is no Ketuanan Melayu. This is just mind games at its worst!

Yes, everything was discussed behind closed doors. This is where Ketunan Melayu was berthed. Perhaps now the people of Malaysia is ready to accepot the ISA as part of Ketuanan Melayu !

only then will they ease up from their respective cultural and religious heritage and allow themselves to melt into a common national heritage which will take generations . but this process cannot be hastened if the government, after the elections treats people in accordance to their ethnicity , religion and history. SRI LANKA attempted this approach and now see where they are ? does dr mahathir wish for the situation in SRI LANKA to be replicated here ? SILLY OLD MAN DR MAHATHIR IS . NEVER HAD THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD STATESMAN BUT WAS JUST AN INTELLIGENT BUT SILLY IDIOT . HMMM ... AN OXYMORON in our midst.

After 5 decades of UMNO rule, we can just assume that the common people have realised that what UMNO has brought to the country was good, but NOT good enough for the whole population.
You as a leader, should very well know that you are the company that you bring with. The people that lead this country now were once your loyal followers and with that the common people can only assume, you have failed to guide them. You have failed to lead them by example. That is why UMNO is in this predicament today.
When you speak of things like liberation of speech and other rights, especially during your tenure as PM, why is that you speak as if you are the only person who knows what's best for the people, thus being an adversary to anyone whom disagrees with you (Not that you changed much after you've retired)?
You seem to forget that you were there in parliment because of the people, for the people and to serve the people. Not the other way around. I think it is apt that we call this as 'Melayu mudah lupa' which is also ironically made known by you.
The gist is, now that you have retired, your loyalists have been coming on to the public and speaking just the way you did when you reigned. Thus, the vicious cycle continued, until the people of all race just got fed up with being fed with inane ideas.
And this has brought all of us here today. UMNO lost its 2/3 majority. Bigger opposition. More liberal media and the unraveling of the heinous facade of UMNO through bribery, corruption, savage and uncouth behaviour in the august parliment.
Well, all I can think of is that, it seems now that the elected representatives are more uncivilised and uneducated to lead by example. The tables have turned. The people want to have a bigger say in what the leaders want to do to the country. I know this is unprecedented to you, obviously you are new to this. But the people will eventually get what they want.
Maybe not today, maybe not even in 2020 but eventually they will. So, with all the respect still accorded to you by the people (consider yourself lucky), I suggest you start having some faith in the common people not because you are hoping to win the election, but because you believe that the common people of Malaysia wants to achieve harmony, prosperity and a better future for all Malaysians.

"They say it is good to be more open but it is premature. The people do not understand freedom of speech and it has caused racial tension," he said.
TDM, when will the administration going to be more liberal if not given a chance to start now?
It’s because you wanted to control the country for your own interest and for the Umno, you had demonstrated by using the ISA to control the freedom of speech.
Its already 50 years rule by BN, may I know how many more 50 years so that we can understand the freedom of speech?
You wouldn’t be here to see this for long; life is short, just enjoy your retirement, donate your money to the poor rakyat (you wouldn’t be able take it with you anyway.) and make peace with people. Why make your life so difficult at this age.

Anyway, the data shows that 45% of local economy is already owned by the Malays and 65% to the rest. Is that not enough ? The affirmative action favouring the Malays ( no Bumi .. how many non-Muslim bumi are leading a GLC on first choice. Idris Jala is already competent when he was asked to take over MAS, so that is different) has signicantly increase the econonic condition of the Malays in a very short time. Now, it is time for level playing field.
