KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi said today that his final mission is to cool racial and religious tensions in this multiethnic country, as he rushes through a raft of reforms in his last weeks in office.
He said that a shrinking economy and deepening divisions between the majority Malays and minority Chinese and Indians are the biggest threats facing the country.
“Since I am retiring earlier than I was planning to, (the reforms) have to be done very quickly,” said Abdullah, who will hand over power to his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak in March.
He agreed to step down four years before the end of his term after facing a virtual rebellion from colleagues after the opposition made tremendous gains in March elections. The results robbed the ruling coalition of a two-thirds majority for the first time in four decades.
The opposition’s gains have been attributed to anger among ethnic Chinese and Indians who complain of discrimination in jobs, education and other areas by the Malay-dominated government. They say their religious rights have also become secondary to Islam. Malays, who are Muslims, form 60 per cent of the country’s 27 million people and control the government, the judiciary and the security forces.
He added that he was grappling with how to handle race relations and religious tensions.
“Muslims think from their own perspective. Non-Muslims think from their own perspective,” he said.
Critics say racial polarisation has increased since Abdullah took office in 2003.
“There has been a lack of leadership to bring divisive forces under control, which emboldened religious extremists,” said Democratic Action Party leader Lim Kit Siang.
Abdullah suggested he could establish an institution “where all communities” can take their grievances. The answer could also lie in new legislation, ostensibly clarifying gray areas in laws on religious disputes, he said.
Muslims are governed by Syariah laws in family and personal matters. Ethnic Chinese, Indian and other races come under civil courts. There is no clear-cut guidance on which court has greater authority when it comes to disputes between Muslims and non-Muslims, but civil courts have always allowed Syariah courts to adjudicate and verdicts generally favour Muslims.
“Some people (outside Malaysia) laugh at it and say ‘What the hell is it about?’ ... but it’s not funny at all,” Abdullah said. “These are very, very serious issues.”
An anti-corruption bill introduced by Abdullah that would establish a powerful Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was passed today. Another one to create a committee to appoint senior judges to ensure judicial independence was passed yesterday.
But the opposition has refused to vote for the committee because it can only recommend the appointment of judges while final approval remains with the prime minister. — AP

Other Races + Malay = Minimal or NO Tension
Other Races + Umno ( BN ) = Tension Going To Explode
Please set the record straight !

when a culture (social or political) does not inherently adopt merit as the right path, all you are left is racism and religion persecution as the only approach to govern.
the premier is simply wasting his time

I believe that Badawi may have at least some regrets that he did not put his foot down on those fanatic elements within his party that created so much tension, which ultimately destroy him. However, the least that he can do at this moment before he retires, is to promote more harmony and unity in the society. I don't think that is anything wrong with his courage and character. So to all my fellow Malaysians, please give the man a break. Is that too much to bear?

Huh?! Excuse me, is it just me, or is that a blatant contradiction of statements?
How do you ensure judicial independence if the executive has the final say on the appointment of senior judges?!

all judgement on religious conflicting cases was ruled in favour of muslims; no open forum allowed; the Article 10 forum in penang was stopped by mobs (planted by UMNO penang); the forum on religious freedom at the Bar Council was stopped again by mobs planted by UMNO and PAS again!
All this deteriorating condition on race and religious issues put all non Malays and non muslims and even moderate malays and moderate muslims off! That explains why BN lost their underwear in the last election.
Only now our PM realises this problem when his PM shelf life is hardly 3 months to go?
My dear PM, please pillow talk to your new wife....she will listen to you better.
As for the rest Malaysians, we inherited a rotten and corrupt goverment, an inflation of 8% in June when you raised the fuel pump price by 42% overnite...making it one of the highest in the world; we also inherited a nation less tolerant of non muslims and everything less islamic.
We have fatwas after fatwas which make us a laughing stock to the world outside! Yes, i am a non muslim, but i m a malaysian. am I not entitled to my dignity and pride as a malaysian? if my pride and dignity as a malaysian is insulted by some religious bigots because of some ridiculous court rulings and fatwas, where can I turn to for recourse? where else, but to speak to the press and blogs like this?
So my dear PM, please we have quite have enough of your antics and sleepy jokes! please leave the stage in peace....and may allah be with you in your retirement...and fight your nemesis called Dr M with your blog. i have sympathy for you by the way the big mouth Dr M wack you so unfairly! If i were you, PM, I would have him put under ISA to let him taste his own medicine!
cheers
Dr M Mocker!

However, racial and religious problems are been resolved by old methods, old ways and half heartedly in action notwithstanding good intentions of leaders like Badawi
Can Msia export a practical solution to the world's crisis of confidence in religious and ethnic conflicts apart from Msia's current brand of polticial racism and polite tolerance?
Lack of intellectual courage and creativity is always the result of lack of desire to excel in the global market of great ideas.

These are illusion created by UMNO. These were similar tricks used by Nazis.
Luckily majority Malays do not buy their tricks anymore.
Do UMNO ever want to change ? No way.
We change them the next round. Allah is Almighty.

Anyway, I have a feeling that the government is out to deceive the people, especially the younger generation when the RUKUNEGARA is being mutilated. The RUKUNEGARA printed behind school exercise books have been censored, only the five principles are printed whereas the preamble is totally left out! This is very deceiving of the government towards the younger generation and I think it is trying to follow the Japanese in changing history!

The only solution to the present dilemma is either to make BN a single party with all members given the rights to vote or make UMNO a UNITED MALAYSIAN NATIONAL ORGANIZATION. Promotion of Bangsa Malaysia has to go on and the racially based approach of BN to govern has to go.
The only other solution is for the PM to wake up and use his power to make sure KJ pays up and all the tinted UMNO ministers to owe up to their contributions for failing to do their job properly leading to the lost of the two third majority.

Recent style of TV7 new bias reporting adds fuel to this fire. You can feel that UMNO is behind NTV7 subtle advertisement bragging about the Government's success in certainly areas; it certainly make you sick.
To me, the main fault of following a fascist approach has created a huge public sector that fail to deliver. Security and the waywardness of the public towards the police and the authorities is a reflection of anarchy in Malaysia.
How do you expect the public to behave when the authorities do not lead effective and have so many bad hats? The millions of drivers in Malaysia is experiencing this phenomenon daily. This will get worst as more poor people appear on the street.

In fact the racial tensions all originate from UMNO. Just look at Ahmad Ismail and Mukhriz. Racist ideas and comments flying around and all they get is a warning and a suspension. I wonder what would happen if both of them were in PR? I bet our dear Home Minister, the "candle" who "sacrifices oneself for the good of the country" will be hammering the both of them with ISA.
And let's not forget what he mentioned. "Muslims think from their own perspective. Non-Muslims think from their own perspective." For your information, PM, this difference between the two major groups of the country is all due to the prolonging of the New Economic Policy which was supposed to end 10 years after our independence. All the racial tensions as a result of discrimination in favor of Bumiputeras are due to the damned policy.
But to compare Mahathir and Badawi, I would rather have the latter ruling the country. Most people can't see that all that's wrong now, including corruption and racial tension, already existed a long time ago, is due to Mahathir's iron-fist ruling. During the years of Mahathirism, the emotional and psychological scars of the 1969 racial riots, along with the misuse of the Internal Security Act, have shunned Malaysians (particularly non-Bumiputeras) from speaking out in the government. (Never mind what Mahathir and the rest of UMNO said in interviews; they're chameleons.) With freedom of speech slowly increasing under Badawi's rule, all the shame that was UMNO's doing started leaking out.
Would we even have this website to begin with if Mahathir was still in power? I believe not. The credit for this, my fellow Malaysians, goes to Badawi. I salute him for that, as the saying goes: "reward those who are right, punish those who are wrong."

If you can change within Umno, you will solve 99% of the country's problems
