KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 7 - Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim drew parallels last night between the conflict in Gaza and what he called the sufferings of Malaysians as he hit the campaign trail at a mammoth rally attended by thousands here.
Attempting to touch a sensitive chord among the mainly Muslim constituency here, he accused Umno, the main party in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, of acting like Israel.
"The leadership is busy collecting wealth. While Israel is punishing the Palestinian people for choosing Hamas, it is no different from Umno punishing Malaysians for choosing the Pakatan Rakyat," he told a ceramah here on the first day of campaigning for the Kuala Terengganu by-election.
Thousands of local residents had gathered to listen to a star-studded Pakatan Rakyat (PR) rally here where besides Anwar, the DAP's Lim Kit Siang and Pas president Hadi Awang were also among the top draws.
The flag-waving crowd cheered loudly during Anwar's speech, punctuated with shouts of "Allahu Akbar", which translates as "God is Great," the standard clarion cry of the Pas faithful.
With a majority of Malaysia's Muslims backing the Palestinian cause, Israel's ongoing invasion of Gaza is having a major impact on domestic politics.tonight
Political leaders from either side of the divide have been busy burnishing their Islamic credentials, and Anwar's attack against Umno last night will likely put BN on the defensive in the days to come.
The Kuala Tere
ngganu by-election sees a three-way fight between BN's Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh, Abdul Wahid Endut of Pas and independent Azharuddin Mamat.
Setting the tone for the campaign, Anwar told the huge flag waving crowd gathered at a beach behind the Astaka shopping centre here that the problem with Umno was that it was corrupt and ignored the suffering of ordinary Malaysians.
Sticking to his Gaza theme, he said: "Umno, like Israel, does not recognise the chosen Hamas leadership."
The Opposition Leader also spoke on the Hudud issue, and blamed "Umno and its controlled media" for fanning religious and racial hatre
d.
Pas vice-president Husam Musa's recent remarks that his party would want to introduce Hudud, the strict Islamic code which prescribes amputation, stonning and whipping as punishment for criminal offences, had touched off criticisms from non-Muslim groups, including PR partners DAP.
While the Hudud issue has caused uneasiness in other parts of the country, it has little traction in the east coast states, where a huge majority of the population, are conservative Muslims.
Still, with a tight race anticipated, both the BN and PR campaigns are mindful of the need to secure the Chinese vote, which represents around 11 per cent of voters here.

Why would Anwar answer Karpal on behalf of Pas? Is Anwar the Pas leader? The Pas President? Pas has its leaders and if one wants an answer from it, you go to them. Why do you need proxies like Anwar to get an asnwer from Pas? And anyway, what does Pas need to explain? Pas has been established 50 years ago to establish an Islamic State, what's new? What should it explain? It is exsistence or what? Whether it succeeds or not is a question for Malaysians and not Anwar explaining anything. You are pathetic creature and a low class throwback. Don't try to control people and get them to toe your diabolic line. Mean!

Just remember who surpress the Malaysians esp Malays (cause majority are Malays) in Kelantan & Terengganu when PAS is in power... Is it not Be End government? Be End stopped all the funds from flowing. They even stopped the royalty money that they had been paying to Terengganu for 20 over years during PAS in power.
Now they are doing it to all 5 Pakatan states.. Now they are punishing Malaysians living in that 5 states for voting them out...
Say no to cruelty to fellow Malaysians, say no to Be End... Vote PAS, Vote PR..

I have been arguing since the March 8 General Election that Chinese people must become the swing voters, meaning that we will vote for the side (Party) that will serve our people with fairness and due consideration, which the dominant UMNO took for granted that Chinese support through MCA is a GIVEN, but it is not as the landslide outcome of Mrach 8 has shown in states where Chinese votes form the decisive voter block. I argued that Chinese component of Malaysian society is 24% and that in the USA, the Black vote that put Barack Obama into office constitutes only 8%. What percentage of the population the Chinese votes make is not the imporatant question, BECAUSE THE SUPPORT FOR DATO SERI ANWAR IS EQUAL TO THAT OF THE PULL OF THE UMNO and therefore even if the Chinese vote bank is a mere 1%, but if we voted as swing voters then we can swing victory for Dato Seri Anwar if we all voted for him and his party.
The much courted Chinese voters demonstrates my call for all Chinese to vote for the party that will serve our Chinese people with fairness and justice, and so far (51 years)the Barisan National have been shaking their KERIS AT OUR FACES TO THREATEN US, this is more than enough reason to hold UMNO and that fellow KERIS MUDDIN responsible. Please my dear Chinese brothers & sisters of Kuala Trengganu TO COME OUT IN FULL FORCE AND MAKE YOUR VOTE A SWING VOTE. To become a swing voter you must vote PAS even if you as I do not like PAS because they are very much like UMNO but for this by-election if THE CHINESE WANT TO TAKE THE SWING VOTER POSITION WE HAVE TO BY NECESSITY VOTE PAS.
To say the least I do not like PAS and their bigotted brand of Islam but PAS is opposition and to be swing voters, all our Chinese brothers & sisters must vote PAS TO SWING THE PENDULUM so that we become swing voters. TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL, it is that simple and for the last 51 years MCA has made us fall everytime.
VOTE PAS VOTE FOR THE SWING VOTE ! My Chinese brothers & sisters.

The only way to deal with UMNO and those bigots is to vote them out of government and the first BLOW AGAINST UMNO IS FOR THE CHINESE TO VOTE PAS EVEN AS WE DO NOT LIKE PAS.

You've just legitimised the existence of Umno, MCA, and MIC with your constant harping on race. No matter which side of the fence you're on, this is parochial and unhealthy. Race-speak has ripped our nation and crippled us for generations. It's time we transcended that. Sure be proud of your ethnic roots, but you needn't wear it like a badge.
We are first Malaysians, are we not? And as a spirit, is that not more beautiful?

It has a judicial system, with defense counsels and all of that. The difference? Is just the point of reference would be the Koran.
Also, PAS has even said that Hudud would be applied to Muslims only. Non-Muslims could opt for the law if they wanted to. In this case, it gives more leverage to the non-muslims.
In a way, it's just like the separation of rule between Syariah and the normal-everyday-routine courts.
Kelantan has successfully instituted this, with little fanfare from the non-muslims there. I wonder why there it's a big agenda among all of you?
Sometimes I don't understand you guys at all. Wanting all this equal and all that equal, while not taking the effort to understand the customs and culture of your other 65% neighbors.

But his use of the UMNO-Israel comparison is not original as Helen Ang of Malaysiakini, besides many others prior to her, wrote on it a week ago - see http://www.malaysiakini.com/columns/95644

I'm disgusted by this sort of politicking. I don't care that it's a by-election and "politics is dirty" is NOT a good enough excuse. We voted PR because we despise the filth of BN, so they should strive to behave better in every thing they do. That includes stupid statements like these at political rallies that show such incredible disrespect for the people whose lives are being ripped apart.
Lastly, I must point out that you would never EVER hear a horrible comparison like this from Nik Aziz because he is a man who truly sticks to his religious principles, without bending them based on convenience.
Anwar is losing more and more respect by the minute. If he truly sees himself as the future PM, he should learn to take proper stands on the issues while carrying himself in a respectable and moral manner. I hope to see an apology from him about this awful comparison but I'm sure to be disappointed once again.
Call me idealistic if you will, but politics doesn't have to be dirty. It's just the easier option chosen by lazy politicians with weak (or nonexistent) morals.
May God forgive us for our sins.

I suppose headlines have to be thought up and in this case news "created" from a rather unexciting speech

1. Like Isreal, when the Malays in Terengganu chose Pas, Mahathir punished the Malays in Tgnu, took away their royalty, turned it into an Umno purse and imposed a crippling embargo on the state. Till today, the state hasn't recovered from that painful period and billions were stolen in the process yet the poor Malays who punished for their choice continue to suffer.
2. Like Isreal, Umno imposed a crippling sanctions on Kelantan and till today, Kelantan is suffering yet its people are Malays and Muslims. Kelantan is denied investment, federal govt assistance and education input. Umno is Isreal.
3. Like Isreal, Umno refused to recognise Pakatan MBs and CMs but rather created its own cronies to dispense the people's money. In the process, billions are being lost, productivity curtailed, organisation hampered and animosity fanned.
4. Like Isreal, Umno uses its dirty media to slander and manufacture lies against its victims, Pakatan leaders and supporters. Yesterday, Utusan Munafiq was slandering Perak MB as it has done since he has been elected. Like Isreal, Umno demonises its opponents in order to deceive the world and the people. It deliberately puts words into Lim Kit Siang and his son's mouths and says they are "enemies" (read terrorists).
5. Like Isreal, Umno leaders are causing economic havoc and stealing from other people yet accuse others of corruption and infertility. Umno is Isreal and Isreal is Umno.
6. Like Isreal, Umno manipulates its people so that it kills their conscience and always plants fear in them: the enemy is here, they are here, they want to want to challenge Malay people (Isreal: they want to kill all of us), they want to take our rights (Isreal: they want to take our God given rights) bla bla bla, but neither Isreal nor Umno is interested in the ultimate truth and freedom and equality of the human race. Both believe in subjugation, hatred and outright manipulation using the media.
7. Like Isreal, Umno leaders are corrupt. Hardly is there an Isreal leader not brought down by scandal and there is no single Umno leader without a scandal. The same scambags.
8. Like Isreal, both use sophistry to blind people and endear themselves to local and world opinion but they are unmitigate disaster full of hatred and inequality.
9. Like Isreal, Umno manipulates the Malay people by playing with their sentiments and making them feel endangered and besieged so that the leadership continues to rule and plunder while the poor people are made to hate the Chinese and Indians (or Palestinians in the case of Isreal).
10. Like Isreal, Umno uses propaganda, massive machines of packaged lies, vanished lies and unmitigated lies to sustain themselves and their cohorts. Reject Umno and vote for Pas/Pakatan.
