Tee Keat: MCA to identify needs of KT Chinese

KLANG, Jan 11 – MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the party would take advantage of the Kuala Terengganu by-election campaign until polling on Jan 17 to identify the needs of Chinese voters in the parliamentary constituency.

Although the Chinese voters there numbered only 8,375 or about 11 per cent of the total in the constituency, he said they could still determine the outcome of the by-election.

“Based on MCA's experience in several by-elections before, each state has its priorities which may reflect the needs of voters, which can also be influenced by the kind of local and national issues raised during the campaign period.

“Therefore, the MCA needs to identify the concerns and priorities of the Chinese voters to enable the party to provide the feedback on the issues raised,” he told a news conference here after officiating a Klang MCA division motivational programme today.

Asked about the by-election campaign, Ong said it was still early to ascertain which party had the most support since anything could happen at the last minute.

“But what is important is for the Barisan Nasional (BN) by-election machinery to work harder to win the hearts of the constituents.

The by-election will see a three-cornered fight involving BN's Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut from PAS and independent Azharudin Mamat. – Bernama
