KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 17 — In a major boost for the Pakatan Rakyat, Pas won the Kuala Terengganu by-election tonight in convincing fashion, with its candidate Abdul Wahid Endut taking the parliamentary seat by a 2,631-vote majority over his closest rival, Barisan Nasional's Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh.
"Perhaps it is because I have known the voters for so long," said Wahid after his victory was announced. "I believe many of the Chinese voted for me."
With this win, the PR alliance increased its representation in Parliament to 82 seats, and while it does not significantly affect the balance of power, it provides the fledgling partnership of Pas, DAP and PKR a huge psychological advantage as it continues to try to destabilise and topple the BN government.
It is also the clearest sign yet that the PR alliance has not lost the support it obtained in the last general election, when it denied BN its traditional two-thirds majority in Parliament.
BN's defeat in Kuala Terengganu is also a significant setback for Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who led the ruling coalition's campaign and who is set to take power as prime minister in March when Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi retires.
"In a democracy we respect the people's choice.
"Of course it's a setback for BN. We will continue to serve. It will not dishearten us," said Najib.
Asked what he thought this meant for BN's chances in the next general election, he said: "There is no impact."
With this defeat, BN still has 137 seats in Parliament, with one independent and two from SAPP. PR parties make up the remaining 82 lawmakers.
Wakaf Mempelam assemblyman Abdul Wahid defeated Wan Ahmad by 32,883 to 30,252 votes. Independent Azharudin Adam lost his deposit after obtaining only 193 votes. In last year's general election, BN won the seat by a wafer-thin 628 votes.
The turnaround for Pas shows the party not only managed to win over the crucial Chinese votes, which went BN's way last year, but also managed to claw back significant numbers of Malay votes which it had conceded to the ruling coalition previously.
The loss will cause BN to do some soul searching as it is the second by-election it has lost since March 8.
A victory in Kuala Terengganu would have represented a recovery from March 8, and provided a fillip for Najib as he prepares to take power.
But instead, Pas's win is likely to solidify PR's alliance and provide what Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says will be renewed momentum to topple BN.
Pas president Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang said his party's win was a sign the people wanted change.
He also took the opportunity to pile pressure on Najib, and said that with this defeat for BN, it was perhaps better that Abdullah stays back as prime minister for now.
"I want Pak Lah to remain as PM to see through his reforms.
"Pak Lah has shown an open attitude and his leadership has brought much change," he said.
He cited as an example the willingness of the returning officer in the by-election to quit after complaints were made by Pas about his alleged biasness.

There goes the so-called "reform" that the BN & MSM were 'parading about'...yeah - the 'supposed' handing over of power to Najib, or OTK helming MCA, or MIC's "re-branding" exercise...

RACIST & CORRUPT POLITICIANS,
3 STRIKES - YOU'RE OUT!
“Ordinary people have more sense than their leaders sometimes. They know the value of co-operation, mutual respect and harmony. I believe the people have spoken out loudly and clearly. The future direction of the country is no longer going to be solely in the hands of the political masters. They have had enough of scandals, abuse of power, and poor administration.”

Analysis:
It means Pakatan is a viable coalition. It means Anwar Ibrahim is still a Malay leader respected by Malay heartland despite Umno's numerous attempts to portary otherwise. It means DAP and PAS are coming closer despite Karpal's outbursts. Whenever he attacked Hudud, prominent Chinese DAP leaders flew to KT to campaign for Pas. It is like they were rebuffing him in a diplomatic way.
It means that Pas Tgnu will realise the need for a better Pakatan. Had it not being Pakatan's campaign, Pas would have failed as a party. PKR and DAP worked tirelessly for Pas. It means Umno's claim to be the sole Malay champion is non-exsistent. Malay heartland is revolting against Umno, even in states it has 2/3 majority. Umno will never be able to claim to be to the lord of Malays. They may, but it will be a bad joke if not outright stupidity.
It means more unity for Pakatan and more disunity for BN. It means spinning by envelope journalists can't work with the people. They have crossed the Rubicon. They want honest answers not dirty work meant to belittle their intelligence. The people can read between the lines. It means Umno is staring at a defeat in a general election be it now or in the future. It means Najib's credibility (if there was ever any) is at stake. He can't afford to lose every time with a bigger margin and claim leadership on a silver platter. However much one tries to help him in exonerating him fom the ignominious defeat, it will hold no water. The back stops at his door. It means Anwar's rise is unstoppable for now. It means Anwar's supremacy in Pakatan is confirmed. The Tganu faction too realises the need to have him around as he mobilised his supporters (non-Pas), PKR and DAP to campaign. They realise the futility of parochial politics and too much conservatism. That's why Pas Vice President Ahmad Awang said the win was "for Pakatan not for Pas alone." (Malaysiakini). It means Badawi's legacy is non-exsistent. It means Hudud will no longer work as an albatross (weapon) to be used against the Chinese and Indians. They may have disagreements with it, but that's different from their future and wellbeig as a whole. It means the total death of BN component parties. It means the BN media is simply useless. They can write what they want but the people refuse to buy that. The better they report the truth, the better they help their dying BN.

as a KL-ite far and away removed from these momentous events, the result is yet another wake-up call to the BN.
for too many years now, the BN have employed a particularly nasty and divisive formula to get its way in elections and by-elections: the carrot and the stick; in KT, from where i sit, the carrot was the 'generous' release of wang ehsan to the state (sort of like my robbing someone and then expecting their gratitude when i deign to return my victim's property), and the stick was the usual; dire warnings of racial upheavals in all its imaginatively convoluted derivative forms.
in the end, perhaps out of frustration with the BNs component parties' inability to fully commit itself to a platform of REAL reform, the people of KT have by their choice, elected to exercise common sense and not fall prey to the usual scams and fear-mongering by the BN.
in the final analysis, the BN has only itself to blame. the infighting and bickering within both UMNO and their MCA lackeys in the months since the last General Elections have put paid to any hope the public may have had that they were indeed serious in reforming themselves and to make them relevant to modern malaysian society.
but equally, it is my most fervent hope that the PR, should they, by the grace of the God and the Malaysian public, be able to form a government in the future, will also need to buck up. it has to focus on administering its states in a way that is totally opposed to that in BN states, i.e. efficiently, fairly and cleanly. and it has to do this quickly.
let's face it: this by-election was as much as a second chance for the PR to regain the initiative. and as 3 years is almost an eternity in politics, how many other by-elections can DSAI hope to come around in order to remain in the public mind? what other fractures and rumblings within the PR alliance can the coalition weather?
as easy as it is to punch holes in BN's ability to govern and run the country daily, so does the same apply to the PR and they ought not forget that simple fact. only when the PR has demonstrated its ability to do so will the winds of change finally blow in its favor and then the next chapter of the Malaysian story (which i hopefully entitle 'New Beginnings') will begin to be written.
time to get to work, PR!!! earn it! its yours to win or lose!

Lulled into complacency
ON THE BEAT
BY WONG CHUN WAI
The acceptance of PAS’ conservative agenda has crept in much faster than we think.
Suddenly, many early opponents of hudud laws have began to lull their supporters into believing that hudud and the Islamic state is for Muslims only.
Do we really believe that under PAS rule, the theologians and ideologues would allow the existing secular court structure to remain?
Do they really believe they will allow us to continue the liberal lifestyle of non-Muslims and moderate Muslims?
The first step must never be allowed to begin and if we let down our guard, they will begin tearing down the present secular structures.

It does confirm the downtrend of the corrupt entity that is BN and Umno.
At the same time, I would like to urge my fellow Malaysians not to lose sight of who are the ultimate winners - the Rakyat of Malaysia.
And let us not make the mistake of those who came before us in entrusting all our faith to any one party (by that, I mean coalitions of parties as well) for over 5 decades.
Let's remember we have the power to vote in and also to vote out.
Should Pakatan betray our trust in future, and in the (admittedly, unlikely for now) event new blood manages to reform the BN parties, let's use them both to keep the other honest. Like Democrat vs Republican, Labour vs Conservative, or Tory vs Liberal, whatever, in other countries, let us show politicians that power is ultimately in the hands of the PEOPLE, not them!

Truly still having his head stuck in the sand. After all the buy-election and now the bye-bye-election, he refused to accept that the rakyat have risen above racial politics and seen through the dirty tribal tricks of BN (divide and rule and enrich a small group of BN politicians and their cronies).
The murdered Altantuya Shaariibuu is watching.
If he is so confident, would he dare to dissolve the parliament in March 09 after he takes over from AB as PM in order to show the whole world that he can proudly be the PM of the nation with the parliament that he wins rather than he inherits? Please be brave and show his jantanness. Or perhaps he should ask rose for permission to do so.

This by election has vindicated my contention. We Chinese do not want the old style politics of the Mahatir's years and the NEP where all races are divided and the nonsense of Ketuaan Melayu dominates Malaysian society. This is just childish ! Why do you want to be LORD, merely by claiming to be Malay nor indeed what is the excitement for wanting to be LORD OVER ANOTHER CITIZEN ? WHATEVER FOR ?
I call on all our Chinese brothers and sisters to vote as a block, not because we want to create any division BUT MORE TO THE POINT TO PULL MALAYSIAN POLITICS INTO CREATING ONE UNITED MALAYSIAN NATION WHERE THE MERITS OF THE CITIZEN BESTOWS ON HIM THE RIGHT TO ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES. To achieve this dream we first need to remove BARISAN NATIONAL FROM GOVERNMENT BECAUSE IT IS THE POLICY OF BARISAN NATIONAL WHICH ESPOUCES RACE BASED POLITICS. This is wrong because it has led to abuse over the last 51 years and because of this wrong Malaysia has regressed. Therefore to remove UMNO we need to remove Barisan National from government, and to achieve this dream we need the Chinese to vote as a block FOR THE OPPOSITION PAKATAN RAKYAT !
WE CAN OVERCOME AND WE NEED CHANGE ! WE NEED TO VOTE PAKATAN RAKYAT IN THE COMING GENERAL ELECTION.

The next commitment for all who can access the internet blogs to pro-actively CAMPAIGN for the next STATE ELECTION FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF SARAWAK ! The election of a Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak state government will pave the way for the election og the next Federal Government of Malaysia. Is this not what we have prayed and waited for. A non racist national government is the pre-requisite for the building of a modern united Malaysia.
UMNO has already lost half of the support of the Malays and for the better if I may say so myself. It has taken Malaysia half a century of education to bring realisation to the Malays that race oriented discrimination has not and will not GROW A BIGGER PIE FOR THE MALAYS FORE-MOST BECAUSE SUCH REGRESSIVE THINKING PREVENTS THE NON BUMIPUTRAS FROM GROWING A BIGGER NATIONAL PIE. A 10 inch pie to be shared in 1957 by 10 Million Malaysians (of course 6 inches of the 10 inch pie went to the Malays) is now 10 inches to be shared by 28 million (of which 9 inches went to the Malays) but even as the Malays take 9 inches of the 10 inch pie, THIS WILL GIVE EACH MALAY LESS BY HALF EACH OF THE 1957 PIE.
IF YOU TAKE AWAY THE PRODUCTIVE DRIVE OF THE NON MALAYS, WHO WILL PRODUCE A BIGGER PIE ? Working for the national government in the civil service will not produce any pie at all.

All I want for us in Malaysia is to have one day have a gomen that is fair, just and really work for us the people and not for themselves and their cronies!
A gomen who will bring progress to each state and it's people, not only during elections, but on a regular and consistently check on the progress made.
It's a great day! The best news I have today!
