LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 — Intel Corp said yesterday it is consolidating its manufacturing operations as a part of a restructuring bid that will affect thousands of jobs from the US to the Philippines.
Between 5,000 and 6,000 employees will be affected, though some may be offered posts at other facilities, the company said.
The world's largest chipmaker is closing two assembly test facilities in Penang, Malaysia and one in Cavite, Philippines and will halt production at a plant in Hillsboro, Oregon. It will also end wafer production at a facility in Santa Clara, California. All five are older factories, the company said.
Intel currently employs about 84,000 workers. The company expects to complete the job cuts by the end of the year.
Last week, Intel posted a whopping 90 per cent decline in its fourth-quarter profit, hurt by declining demand for its microprocessors — the brains of PCs — amid the economic downturn.
The results, however, matched Wall Street's expectations as the company had twice lowered its sales forecast.
Shares of the company climbed 17 cents to US$13.43 in after-hours trading, having closed the regular session up 40 cents at US$13.26. — AP

So, your news of a shut down must be a fabricated lie? Remember, our leaders have been telling us repeatedly that we can buffer the global recession.

a. Ketuanan Melayu - laughable, tuan when you are hungry..?
b. Insulation from the rest of the world - not when you are ranked as one of the top trading nations of the world.
c. Translatable - Dewan BP thought they could translate all English to Malay given enough resources, that is until the internet revolution took off and there were more books being published than they could translate.
d. Islamic law - they think it is perfect when it is far from it - God's law is only perfect when implemented by God. Man is known to be fallible by the holy books - so how can they implement God's law.
God will know when to reward and when to condemn you, no need for man to try to use HIS name.
e. Racial polarisation - another of UMNO's invention.
Intel lastest action is a series of ungoing and continuous signs that UMNO's fallacy no longer has a place in this modern world.

Anyway, their wish have come true...Intel's gone for now....happy now? More unemployed people in times of recession! Pity Guan Eng that it happened in his State.
Let's wait and see which big companies will be packing and leave soon? Previously was Western Digital in Sarawak.

Well back then, I wrote for a mainstream newspaper.
Even without mentioning the name of my publication or company, word of me saying that in public was the talk of the editorial floor.

But the impact is just a small taste of the result of a boycott.
You want a boycott to hurt an American company, this is what a hurt American company does.
And more will follow.
Dr M said "sacrifices" have to be made for our principles.
I'm sure those ex-Intel workers, and their Western Digital counterparts in Kuching, feel happy that their principles are safe.

Despite the bad press, it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as the Intel R&D team in Penang now have some space to grow when the economy recovers. To those that talk about moving up the value chain, perhaps they are not informed that Intel Malaysia is easily the biggest R&D facility in Malaysia. We have a bench strength of more than 1000 engineers in R&D.

Think about it:
The boycott is less than 1 month old. Our population is less than 30 million. Not all of us are joining the boycott. Intel is the largest chip manufacturer in the world. Do you really think our boycott has anything to do with the closures?
bigone, Western Digital's Kuching plant closed BEFORE the boycott started. I don't think even a worldwide boycott would have an effect before it even starts.
Demand is shrinking worldwide, especially for semiconductor manufacturers. They need to reduce operating costs. So they are consolidating their resources - shrinking payrolls, closing inefficient facilities, reducing operation time, etc.

MNCs and local businesses are all adversely affected from diminishing orders from overseas buyers. It is imperative for them to trim their excessive overheads in consistent with the sluggish lower sales.
There are so much the govt need to do:
1) Create "Unemployment funds" to help these retrench workers financially
2) Labor & manpower dept should help find or relocate these workers to other trades
3) Enforce the "retrench foreign workers first" policy to protect Malaysians
4) Emulate constructive workable policies from East Asian countries which join hands with all affected industries in reducing salaries & work hours but not retrench workers.
Conduct constant monitoring on global economic trends & adjust applicable policies accordingly !
By now the federal govt & opposition states should shrug off their differences & work closely in tackling this current economic crisis that will inevitably taking care of the rakyat's welfare irrespective of race.
No financial experts or analysts can predict precisely how bad & how long this will last. But we must be well prepared before it is too late!

2. This is not due to Dr M's call to boycott
Intel planned to move to Vietnam months ago. They closed their Phil plants a few mths ago. They gave LGE the chance to convince them to stay in Penang. Guess what ? LGE blew it.
Now LGE is saying Intel is not closing the plants (see the Bernama news). Is he saying Intel is lying ?
Perhaps someone should also ask Jeff Ooi why he made the comments before GE that Intel is closing down ? This obvious lie coming back to hit LGE where it hurts the most.
Just wait and see, investors lining up to leave Penang. Motorola, Dell, WD, Jabil, Flextronics, are just some of them....Don't say I didnt warn...

Why? they didn't discuss that with you? You under estimate your employer. Remember anything anti-American is heard everywhere especially the stte department. Do you know the briefing the President of the US gets every morning? So think before you spew!!
======
Shankar accused Anon of under estimating his employer, Intel, and for not believing in the effects of a non-existent boycott. He says that maybe it's because his employer didn't share the info of the grave effects of the non-existent boycott. It seems that he knows more about the goings-on in Intel better than an Intel employee. He also knows that the President of the United States is being regularly briefed on a daily basis about anti-american activities more than the average joe spewing, or should i say sharing honest personally experienced remarks like Anon, the Intel employee. All hail Shankar, for he knows everything.
