By Neville Spykerman
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 – Selangor executive councillor and Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman Elizabeth Wong broke down in tears as she announced her resignation from both posts today following the circulation of her nude photographs.
“I have received overwhelming support from family and my constituents but in the interest of my party, I have decided to offer my resignation as exco member and State Assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan,” she said while trying to contained her tears.
She said the event of the last two days have shown an insidious and underhanded attempt by certain quarters to smear her reputation.
“My personal life and privacy has been violated.”
However, Wong who was speaking at the PKR Headquarters in Tropicana here said that while the smear campaign was directed towards her, she was aware that the real objective was to discredit her party.“I wish to state that I am not ashamed of my sexuality as a woman and as a single person. I have broken no law. I stand by the fundamental principle in a democracy that everyone has a right to privacy”
She said PKR stands for “New Politics” that holds justice and human rights as core values which transcends gender, ethnicity and class.
“New politics also means we rise above gutter politics.” she said
Wong said she believed the attacks will continue with greater intensity and did not have any doubt that UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to manipulate the situation.
Wong said she will arrange a proper handover of her responsibilities to Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim whom she thanked for his unwavering support.
Dozens of her supporters who attended the press conference carried banners, cards and flowers, urging her to reconsider.
Her fellow executive council members Teresa Kok and Xavier Jeyakumar also called on her not to resign during the press conference.
Kok said each council member has had to face this sort of personal attacks and this was Wong’s turn. “This can happen to anyone of us.”
PKR vice-president Sivarasa Rasiah said the move to discredit Wong was politically motivated and called on Malaysians to reject what he described as gutter politics.
He said he hopes the police will bring the culprits to task.
PKR Wanita chief Zuraidah Kamaruddin said the party will not let the matter rest and will pursue the culprits.
Meanwhile party sources told The Malaysian Insider that Wong fate is still being decided by the party leadership, who are considering whether to accept her resignation.
The human rights activist and environmentalist will be the third politician in recent history to quit posts due to such photographs or video. The first was then deputy speaker of parliament D.P. Vijandran in 1989 who quit after pornographic tapes featuring him surfaced. Last year, Health Minister Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek resigned on New Year’s Day under similar circumstances.
If her resignation is accepted, it will lead to a by-election in Bukit Lanjan.
The Election Commission has already fixed April 7 for by-elections in the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat in Perak and Bukit Selambau state seat in Kedah. The nomination day for both is March 29.

Though Eli has committed no wrong as those alleged photos were taken without her consent (anyway not our business to intrude into one private's and personal life) she was mindful to offer to resign for the sake of Selangor Government and the party. Unlike the two frogs in Perak who were offered "chinese dolls" and took advantage of it. Khir Toyo, the immigrant from Indonesia, can you offer to say something about these traitors. I suppose you brain is smaller than a pea.

What about the ex-minister and MP who groped a lady's bottom in a hotel coffee-house?

Today, the shoe is on the other foot and it is encouraging to see the voices of support for Elizabeth from both ends of the political divide. Yet, one wonders, was she as charitable when it came to Chua? She can say she is proud of her sexuality as a woman. But wasn't the man she was involved with a Muslim whose religion forbids him to engage in that act of sexuality? Of course, the onus is on the man to be true to his faith. But didn't Elizabeth also know that he was transcending his religious lines by being with her? And it happened when she was a state executive councillor.
Somehow, we tend to hope and wish that those who lead us have higher moral standing than we do ourselves. Its for that reason many of us shy away from high office - politics or otherwise - because we do not want to be put under scrutiny. Elizabeth knew that. She was involved and was in the public eye for so many years. She preached and she was moralistic about a lot of things. Therefore, she cannot expect people to excuse her indiscretion when she herself did not excuse others.
Of course, Khir Toyo is a bigot, hypocrite and not exactly someone anyone in the world would use as a benchmark for morality or ethics. In fact, by resigning, despite her inability yet to accept that she did something which was going to be unacceptable to people who looked up to her, Elizabeth has shown Khir that you have to be accountable. Khir doesn't understand that word..
Personally, I feel sorry for Elizabeth. But at the same time, I cannot help but think that you make the bed you lie on. When she accepted the offer for what used to be considered an honourable position of high office, she knew the score. In politics, nothing is unfair. She exercised that leverage given to politicians when it suited her. She must therefore accept the same standards she used against Chua.
written by JT, February 17, 2009
Anyway, who are we to know of the pain that Elizabeth is going true. I respect her wishes to resign, though I do not applaud it. We should be trying to solve imminent economic problems rather than politicking for votes. The bright side is Bukit Lanjan is up for contest. Let this be the slaughter of BN, particularly UMNO. Go with God's grace, Elizabeth. We owe you for your sacrifice for you have made it possible for the rakyat to deliver the BN yet another crushing blow. See you all in Bukit Lanjan.

Also notice the pics were sent to Malay Mail and not the NST or the Star. MM is known for sensationalist news and not exactly pro-BN.
Notice also that Eli has pissed off many developers by her staunch opposition on hill-side development. Recall at that time some DAP and many PKR folks were mighty offended and blamed her for influencing Khalid Ibrahim to the ban.
We have seen how ADUN V.Arumugam (funny the name means 6 faced in Tamil) was betrayed by his own party members in revealing about his "extra curricular" activities. So it is no big surprise that this was PKR's internal sabotage.
The thing we need to understand is that in Selangor, there is a war going on between PR parties. It is DAP vs PKR, DAP vs PAS, PAS vs PKR, etc. It is no secret that none of them happy to share the spoils. To make matters worse, there is also in-fighting among PKR. This is between old PKR and the new , parachuted candidates from NGOs and others (like Eli, Loh, Mike, etc). These old timers of PKR are extremely jealous of these newcomers becoz withnin a short span of time these newbies managed to raise and occupy senior posts like exco and directors of state bodies. There are knives drawn and backstabbing been going on.
Also these newcomers never warmed up to old skool PKR foot soldiers who thought they should be the ones who should be elevated to ADUN and other high positions within the state govt. When they did not get these positions they blamed Khalid and ever since trying to undermine him and the new PKR reps.
Elizabeth is not exactly a popular figure among PKR rank and file as she is considered "aloof" and "business unfriendly" due to her intellectual approach and a concern for environmental and social issues.
Just imagine someone who can take over her portfolio. This new rep can wield considerable influence and has much "opportunity" financially.
One would expect PKR leaders including Anwar to stand firm behind Eli but there is not even a word of support from DSAI. Instead these hyenas had been making nasty insinuations about Eli.
I guess Anwar wanted to get rid of her to save his own skin so he asked her to resign rather than Eli doing it voluntarily. Knowing her, she would have done so since she is someone with integrity.
Shame on you PKR....

If BN thinks that using such low tactics is going to win the rakyat over, let me say this - you have just enraged every single woman in this country. The comments of people like Hamid Botak and Liow reflects the chauvinistic thinking of these male MPs and clearly shows that these are the kind of low-mentality MPs that would probably blame a rape victim. Every right-thinking woman should be upset - for those of you who voted for these kind of male chauvinist folks last election, I hope you're regreting it now.
Elizabeth, please don't quit - you're made of sterner stuff than that. If Nelson Mandela had quit over small issues, South Africa would not have been what it is today. I mean seriously - we're all born naked anyway - what exactly is your crime that you have to quit now?

So this period in transition is crucial to Malaysian political ecology, whether Change is consistent. So stand by the people's madate to execute wholesome change, reject half-cooked! as we already have too many of such half-cooked politicians running the country for too long ,a characterisitic of inherited political ecology and landscape of Malaysia of which house -cleaning is long overdue.

I cannot and fail to see a strong rationale for you to quit "for the best interest of the party"? I can only think of the following scenario: 1) that you and your party and the alliance are attacked by the UMNO morons left right center. and if this happens, the leaders should have every ground to defend and ensure justice is done in this criminal case. such I dont see why you should quit; 2) internal Pakatan Rakyat has a split of opinion and someones in the alliance has managed to convince everyone from a "moral" ground that you should quit. in short, you quit under the internal pressure. I dont know if this happens at all, but if it does, it's certainly a disaterous decision PR has made!
My rationales why you should not be quitting - 1) you are a politician who serves people that have elected you and your party thus you dont quit when you become a victim of a very despicable political act targeting your party; 2) no one in the PR must hold any moral judgement over you if you are still fit to serve the rakyat becasue this is a criminal case. Nothing morally concerned. if at all morally concerned, it's about those people who have violated your privacy in order to target your party for political mileage; 3) your resignation will send a strong signal to the scumbags behind the plot to continue using this tactic against others and finally bring the opponent party.
As Malaysian, I do not agree with despicable act like this to be used to whichever party. It's ethics and the younger people will take away the message ie victim not protected!
I urge the PR leadership to reconsider their decision should they have asked you to quit and I actually thought they should have appeared with you in the press conferene to show support. Hopefully nothing is cooking internally in the PR.
God bless Malaysians.

Given that the photos were taken from her apartment, surely she must know who the person is.
As much as I have supported PR in the last election, now we must ask these questions.
Why are there accusations against UMNO, and BN in this case?
Is she sure that the person behind the camera is an UMNO operative? If so, what was she doing with him?
Having seen only two photos of her which has been published in a blog, I am sure she is a victim.
She must now ensure that justice is served and she must clear her name by pursuing the option available to her, to assist the police in nabbing the culprit. Edison Chen paid for his folly.
There is no two ways about it.
For all those who truly believe that UMNO is behind it, I want to see the proof before agreeing.
I think rationally.

1. BN/UMNO confiscated the Harakah and Keadilan newspapers immediately after the Perak crisis began.
2. The police has banned all political ceramah in Perak.
3. All BN pro TV has stopped bringing the Perak crisis news accept for the royalty issue.
All this shows BN feels that all news about the Perak crisis has to be stopped at any cost because public opinion is going against them. But to stop the online and blogs from discussing this issue they have to bring another issue. I beleive that Ms Elizabeth Wong's photographs were in their custody long before this fiasco and they feel this is the right time to release it.
And now we see all the online news and blogs are directed toward Ms Elizabeth Wong's issue. What I'm trying to say is, while we defend Ms Elizabeth Wong don't stop the attack on BN/umno over the Perak crisis. Hit BN/umno hard and give them the nightmare that they want to avoid by using Ms Elizabeth Wong issue.

If you honestly believe deep within you that you have committed a wrong then by all means please quit. However, from what you have explained it is obvious you are no wrong doer. If you were, then this would have been in the background and would have surfaced even during the nomination day and during the campaigning period during the last election.
But let it be clear to all and sundry that this is a crystal clear case of either one maniac or a group of maniacs who are hell bent on committing thefts, robberies, gang rapes, and all kinds of despicable evil crimes in their pursuit of money through their perverted characteristics. Frankly our society seem to be saturated with criminals of the worst kind so much so our CPO, Selangor, has himself expressed his anger and desperation at the current crime levels, at his recent press interview with the Malay Mail. That being the case please do not become a victim of these terrorists in our own neighborhood. If you do then every God fearing citizen would begin to lose hope of living in this country. Think of the mothers, the wives, the daughters and those little children playing in the playground. Every one of them need that extra hope and that extra challenge for there is hope. Please grab that extra strength you require and give out that hope for all these people who could one day or another become a victim of such criminals. If you are worried for your own safety please don’t lose hope. Just sound it and I am sure there are many who will volunteer to get that extra security you require. Believe it or not!! It does not take a genius to differentiate a criminal from a non criminal neither does it require some kind of a specialist to discern the type of a woman you are. It is written all over your face that you are indeed a special woman with that God given gift of leadership and intellect that you so easily ooze each time you speak and appear in public. I have never met you but I have seen you on the internet news channels. We don’t have many like you around as most don’t like to serve the society. In short you are a “chosen one”. So is Dr Lo Lo and Theresa Kok. So please be aware and be bold and continue to do what you have been chosen for. Remember, you have done no wrong !! Before I end let me say this. Many men have this sickening instinct of a criminal behaviour in them. There are many reasons behind this. I cant go into this at it is too time consuming. One of them is that former boy friend of yours. I will not say why but he is destined to meet his end in a painful way. Be rest assured of that. But thank the great God for you got rid of him for he would have given you hell for the rest of your life. Remember nature is a very powerful force and we are all a part of nature itself.!!

There is no way, not even 0% percent chance she can stay on in the light of these pics. That's why she has "offered" to resign. Just like V Arumugam she has to resign in order to salvage whatever respect she has. Otherwise I bet that her political enemies (PKR old guards, PAS and BN) will skin her alive using these photos.
That she was involved with a married man as well as a Muslim will not help her at all, if the truth comes out.
What message PR is sending to Malaysians ? That pre-martial sex, mutiple sexual mates, stupidly making videos of love making and pics of you in porno poses are OK ?
For the supporters of PR, this is indeed egg on their face after their strenous defence of their idol who has suddenly turned a porn star. Perhaps this is acceptable in a party led by a sodomite and convicted felon...but the rakyat will not accept.
So, i challenge Eli to stay on or even re-contest after the pics are out.

They asked Khalid (or Anwar – you choose):
The laws of morality in Malaysia commands us that women who have been caught nude unawares at home resign from public posts. What do you say about it?
Khalid/Anwar stooped down, and with his finger, he wrote on the ground. They continued to taunt him with the question.
Khalid/Anwar stood up and said to them:
He who has never been naked at home among you, or had sex, let him be the first one to ask her to resign.
Again Khalid/Anwar stooped down and continued writing on the ground. The dentist and other UMNO political has-beens, after hearing his answer, were silent.
They left Khalid/Anwar, starting with the oldest and ending with the youngest.
Then Khalid/Anwar stood up and asked the woman:
Where are the ones who accuse you? Does no man condemn you?
She said:
No man, sir.
Then Khalid/Anwar said:
Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on be more wary of who you let in your house with a camera.

Anyway I don't think people are that stupid anymore. No one in their right mind will believe that BN is not behind this.
Seriously someone needs to give Khir Toyol a good bitch slap on his face (technically you ca just say slap, since you are slapping a bitch!). I am really starting to get irritated by this a-hole.

If the unscrupulous and corrupted one in BN can stay on to rob and squander from the rakyat, why shouldn't you stay to fight on. Mohdx2 can get himself illegitimately married in another country to avoid the you-know-what and yet stands proudly in his present position in UMNO. All those correct, correct, correct cases have not yet been corrected. And many more ...
Why is she quiting? It doesn't make sense.
Stay on, Eli!!!
