BN getting positive signals from non-Malays in Bkt Gantang — Muhyiddin

TAIPING, April 5 — Although initially people were sceptical about the support from the Chinese and Indians for the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Bukit Gantang by-election, now there are positive signs of their support for the ruling coalition, said Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, said the BN’s explaining of various issues and with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak taking over the leadership of the country on Friday, there had been a wind of change in the support for the BN among the non-Malays in the constituency.

“I hope the Chinese community will understand the BN concept and support the BN leadership because Datuk Seri Najib through his “One Malaysia” slogan has outlined his vision for the people where no citizen will be left out in the country’s development.

“We must reciprocate and can do so by helping the BN,” he told reporters after attending a gathering with the Chinese community at Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Sin Min here today.

At the function, he also presented federal aid of RM1 million to the school for student and teacher activities as well as development.

He said Umno and BN’s leadership had been strengthened with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad rejoining Umno along with is wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and son Datuk Mokhzani.

He also announced that Tun Dr Mahathir would be present at a Proton function in the constituency at Dataran PPP, Batu 2 1/2 Simpang here 10am tomorrow.

“Tun’s (Dr Mahathir) rejoining Umno augurs well for Umno, the BN and nation. I am sure everyone is impatiently waiting to hear what he has to say tomorrow,” said Muhyiddin.

On allegations that Dr Mahathir would try to influence Najib’s government, Muhyiddin said Najib would know better on what was to be done but it could not be denied he would accept counsel from Dr Mahathir or other leaders in the interest of the country.

On claims by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) that 300 PPP members had defected to the party and 6,000 more would be joining them, Muhyiddin said he did not have much information on this and had asked PPP president Datuk M.Kayveas to look into the matter.

Nomination for the Bukit Gantang by-election was on March 29 and polling is on Tuesday. — Bernama
