KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 – What is One Malaysia? This has been troubling supporters of Umno since Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak announced it in his maiden speech as prime minister nine days ago.
Opposition parties have claimed it mirrored the Malaysian Malaysia concept championed by the DAP and, before that, the PAP under Lee Kuan Yew when Singapore was part of Malaysia.
This claim has troubled Barisan Nasional politicians aiming to regroup after the coalition’s disastrous Election 2008 outing.
Today, the Umno-owned Mingguan Malaysia refuted that connotation in an opinion piece and put in perspective that One Malaysia means no one in the country will be sidelined but affirmative action policies will continue.
In not too many words, it remains faithful to the two planks of the National Economic Policy (NEP) – the eradication of poverty irrespective of race and economic restructuring that was launched by Najib’s father Tun Abdul Razak Hussein in the aftermath of the May 13 race riots.
The opinion piece headlined ‘Satu Malaysia versi sebenar’ by Awang Selamat, a pseudonym used by the newspaper’s editors, allayed fears that Najib will end the NEP and ensure equality for all.
Among others, Awang wrote, it included elements of development based on unity and integration, the people’s interests and excellence to push the country’s progress, adding he was glad when Najib denied it had anything to do with a ‘Malaysian Malaysia’ although the government would be fair to all races to transform the country.
“Awang hopes the true version of One Malaysia is understood clearly. The affirmative policies to help the Malays who really poor and left behind (compared to other races) will continue.
“Indeed there is a need to continue the affirmative policies due to historical realities and the social contract while the government intensifies efforts to increase the quality of life for all,” he wrote.
While Mingguan Malaysia, which enjoys wide circulation in Malaysia’s rural areas where Umno still commands majority support and respect, has made its definition, it remains to be seen how Najib will put the slogan into action.
However, it is clear that the concept will not work with a top-down approach as Malaysians become more aware of the power of their vote and are willing to shop around for a political party or coalition more in tune with their desires and needs.
While the economy is at the forefront of their minds, Malaysians – particularly the young and those in the urban areas – have been clamouring for an independent judiciary, respectable police force, equal treatment and politicians who don’t speak from both sides of their mouths.
They have been demanding reforms in various government policies and institutions, handing former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, a huge mandate in the 2004 elections but taking it back in 2008 when the reforms faltered.
The country’s sixth prime minister has added “People First, Performance Now” to his One Malaysia concept to recapture the people’s confidence and it will be up to him and his cabinet, which has already been maligned by the opposition, to ensure they live up to his slogan.
And ensure that his “One Malaysia” is the same as their “One Malaysia”.

Hopefully PR will stop them this time round because Malaysia can't afford it. Not that we could afford it last time........ but it could be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Who is " their" in this case ? Is the " their " referred to UMNO, BN, Pakatan , PAS , DAP or the Malaysians at large ? There are so many " theirs " in our country. All of them have different interpretation of ONE MALAYSIA. All of them want their own ONE MALAYSIA. Their ONE MALAYSIA may not be the all Malaysians' ONE MALAYSIA.
All their ONE MALAYSIAs are different from the acrtual Malaysians' ONE MALAYSIA. Can all Malaysians' ONE MALAYSIA dream comes true ?

There seems to be confusion as to the meaning of ONE Malaysia. What is the difference from Pakatan Rakyat's "Ketuanan Rakyat" (which is clearly understood by the public)
Could you please clarify what you mean by ONE Malaysia in relation to
- NEP
- Education
- Business practice in private sector
- Race relationship
- Religion

That's like telling the wife 'you are the one and only I truly love' and same goes for the mistress.
They can go on playing the race card, it is a matter of time before India and China flex their muscle, Malaysia should be thanksful that we have a pool of highly educated indians and chinese to bridge the gap between India and China, we can be the focus point, their business partners.

One Malaysia policy should move towards a nation that champions equality for all, instead of favoritism and cronyism.
For too long our nation has been plagued by narrow mindedness. Far too behind our civilisation lag behind others, including African nation although economically we are more advanced.
It's time for our nation to progress and lead our people to next level of civilisation and enlightenment.

Which brings us to believe it only exists as a PR exercise in the heads of the UMNO/BN spindoctors.
Nobody in Malaysia can even guess what are the main five points of the so called 1Malaysia much less repeat it from memory.
To me it is merely a rehashed slogan of "Ketuanan Melayu" if the NEP is to continue.
Hahaha...what a joke!

1Malaysia will experience difficult labour given the deep polarization of Malaysian society, for which UMNO plays no small part.
It is overshadowed by the miscarriage of NEP, the Pendatang logic and the later Ketuanan Malayu. 1Malaysia, to be forward looking, cannot afford to bear the baggage of old logic that is self-defeatist in a new globalised and digitised environment.
Its conceptual relevance cannot run shy of the essence Malaysian Malaysia, Bangsa Malaysia, Ketuanan Rakyat, New Nationalism and indeed "Merayatkan Ekonomi."
The conceptual contradictions of the polar divide is unlikely to be successfully negotiated by the new PM.
The final script, if we ever see one, may stand a better chance of wider acceptance and of being translated into public policy if a non-partisan steering group of eminent Malaysians, nominated by both
sides of the political divide. Political groups, NGOs, media and religious groups can make submissions to the steering group, whose time should be limited to 6 months, to submit a consensus document for the nation.
Does the new PM have the political courage to adopt a non-partisan approach ? If not, why the hot air?

Slogans are just "Battle Cry" words and words which can only be proven through "test of time", so the man who says this will sink or float with this words, and will prove to to all whether he is a man of his words or no better than the Fifth PM, just words... to be drowned later.

As Awang, same UMNO policies are welcome. Treat non UMNO Malays and non-Malays as pendatang and second class.
Dream on, Awang.

Our leaders in particular two leaders whose ominous shadows are looming larger and larger in Malaysian life as Najib assumes power is largely responsible for this development. I am talking about Tun Daim and Tun Mahathir of course.
Even though the people are more well off compared with their forefathers but crime is on the rise with the corrupt police forces and bungling judiciary not gaining the confidence of Malaysians that they will be protected by the criminal fraternity. Our sense of honor and morality is being destroyed from the top down by selective application of the law for the people and for the elites, so much so that the fabric of law is in danger of being ripped apart by corruption and greed. Illegal coups and dubious murders do nothing to enhance the people's confidence that they will be protected from criminals and elite forces.
Racial harmony is skin deep at best. Gone are the days when the races genuinely had the muhibah spirit forged in the fires of the independence struggle and struggles against both foreign and domestic insurgents. People are being isolated in terms of race, skin color and class lines.
Further add in the grievances of the Chinese who have contributed so much to the economy and development in Malaysia but are routinely made as scapegoats by the powers that be. The Indians who have loyally supported the government for so long that the government treats them as serfs and not worthy of the elites attention, who have to compete with millions of low paid illegals brought about by the Daim-istaion of the economy. The Dayaks of Sarawak being robbed of their land and livelihood by greedy tycoons in the employ of BN politicians. The people of Sabah being disenfranchised in their own ancestral homeland by West Malaysian political parties, greedy Sabahan frogs and the swarming tides of the more ruthless and cunning Filipino instant citizens. And yet, UMNO still wants to question creating a true One Malaysia, a true Malaysian Malaysia instead of a Malay Malaysia.
Do they not understand that Malaysia is a melting pot that is what it is today because of the various races and not because of the Malays alone. And after 30 years of NEP, the unequal distribution of wealth between the UMNOputras with their bungalows, mistresses, foreign holiday homes and sports cars and the rural Malay masses has increased ever larger. What use is the NEP in its current form? They could perpetuate the NEP forever, and still the Malay masses would be poor and disenchanted. It is time to shake off the baggage of 1969 and the dreams of ultranationalists and reclaim Malaysia's unique position as Malaysia, Truly Asia not Malaysia, Truly Malay.

No matter how it may sound, Najib's "One Malaysia" Isn't Rakyat's "One Malaysia". So, don't be fooled. For the genuine and workable "One Malaysia", look PR.

It is really funny that the above quote from the views of so called Malay intellectuals DO NOT BLOODY SEE THAT THE STATEMENT IS IN OF ITSELF A BLOODY CONTRADICTION. Whatever the Malays want to spin the statement, ONE MALAYSIA means one CITIZENSHIP and all citizens enjoying the same rights that is provided for in the Malaysian Constitution. That said, DISCRIMINATION BASED ON RACE MEANS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. The two concepts are contradictions; you can't have the two concepts rolled into one and call it ONE MALAYSIA; you will still have to call it KETUAAN MELAYU (BLOODY JOKE LA) for the Malays who by law enjoy AFFIRMATIVE PRIVILEDGES and the non-bumiputra who do not.
I say to PM Najib "don't bother to finess the embarrassment for what the Malays want to continue racial discrimination and to keep it going for ever; that is what has been going for 51 years. Nothing will come of this empty talk of ONE MALAYSIA it will never change while UMNO is the Captain that is steering the Nations.
WHEN YOU THINK OF ONE MALAYSIA, ONLY THINK OF PAKATAN RAKYAT BECAUSE ONLY THEY DARE TO UTTER THE CONCEPT OF ONE MALAYSIA WITHOUT FEAR. Why bother with UMNO, they have had their 51 BODDY FUN years, while we Chinese eat grass !

Like Najib himself has said, 'judge me by my actions'. The new cabinet line-up is already a case in point for public to assess whether it reflects the One-Malaysia concept or not. With more 2/3 of the cabinet members are chosen from Umno , one can make out whether Najib is serious about putting his words into actions.
For people who are concerned, I suggest don't lose any sleep over it as it has been 50 over long years since 1957/63.

Nicely put but same old, same old.
Don't be attracted by rhetorics,
Study the substance and you will see...
1 Malaysia is still Umno's policy of promoting
the Malay race as the supreme one, and others
are just passengers - enjoy the ride but don't complain.
After 52 years Umno still complain Not Enough,
They are the masters, no one can withstand them.
The affirmative actions called NEP - to help the poor Malays do well.
No problem if you want to help the poor people achieve more...
But the implementation and monitoring is completely by Umno people...
No transparency, the data is not given to public to scrutinise.
Some expert did a study and concluded the NEP's quota already achieved...
That guy was asked to step down bcos Umno want to hide the truth...
Umno still want the Malays to know they are the only ones who are poor.
Utusan Malaysia is the publicity arm of Umno...
Umno continue to enrich the powerful and keeping the other Malays ignorant.
They preach hate and racial divide in the kampongs...dangerous doctrine.
1 Malaysia - the true version, read the article below.

Satu Malaysia versi sebenar
Awang boleh faham gagasan Satu Malaysia. Rakyat Didahulukan.
Awang termenung panjang.

and now we have 'one malaysia' to brand the najib admionistration and re-image bn. no sooner is the brand launched, umno's pravda already sees the need to obfuscate and confuse about 'our one malaysia and not their one malaysia'. it would be no surprise at all if one malaysia will have several 'official definitions' to be presented to the respective ethnic constituents of bn through utusan, nst, the star, and other official and semi-official party organs.
so bn will now have one malaysia, four definitions. i think i will stick to pr's ketuanan rakyat. one tag, one definition.

How could a policiy not sidelining someone while affirmative action on someone else?
Awang Selamat, please check out the meaning of "one" in the dictionary. Primary School students also know. You are a major Newspaper Editor. Who are you fooling.
Affirmative Action favouring one more than the other, is double or "two" standard, not single or "one" standard.
Let's cut all the crap. "One" cannot be "Two". "Two" cannot be "One".
Awang Selamat, you are not the PM. Let our PM explains his own policies. I do not believe the PM of Malaysia thinks the Rakyat of Malaysia are not smarter than the Primary School kids.

najib and rosmah, will you both file an appeal for the Altantuya Shaaribu aka Amina trial to be reopen in a fair manner?
najib and rosmah must appear in court to clear themselves if they are innocent.
Do invite Bala back into Malaysia and seek the helps from Scotland yard and FBI as Malaysian polis are bias and unprofessional.
1 Malaysia can also means giving back the state of Perak to the voters to decide.
But i dont think najib will do any of those. Which thieves will be so honest?

"1 malaysia" is only a concept for politician, just like the previous PM from the coalition BN. But how many slogan from them have an obvious result, corruption is still on, abusing of power is still continue etc...etc....
So, the the slogan for real? Malaysian shall wait and see.
Time will tell it all.
You want the real One Malaysia, it should start from the ruling government. Strict on yourself is to be mercy to yourself, or the rakyat shall not give mercy. The facts will be very cruel.
yb Najib don't let the rakyat show it to you.
Remember we are Malaysian..... yes we are.

if Mahatir or Badawi were smarter, they would've repackaged the NEP to treat the core target groups that really need help - there is no discrimination for the 'poor', as Malays, Chinese, Indians, Punjabis fall victim to this state of existence. establishing quotas in corprate and education sectors is affirmative action in the mind of BN, but it screams APARTHEID, RACE-RELATED POLICIES and SEGREGATION to me.
can you tell me the difference between a poor Malay and a poor Chinese? how about a poor Indian and a poor Punjabi? poverty afflicts ALL races. if you want to help, help wholely. main 'manja' with one group of people while neglecting the others shows bias and incompetence.
National Economic Policy? nothing 'national' about it.
