KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin continues to draw criticism over his recent comments that Chinese voters were ungrateful for not voting for BN even though the government had assisted the community, with the latest rebukes coming from Umno’s partners in the Barisan Nasional (BN) .
Of the two component parties in the ruling coalition that issued a response to Muyhiddin’s comments however, it was Gerakan that saw its senior leadership speaking out while the task of doing so at MCA was left to the party’s information and communication bureau.
MCA’s response however, was remarkable in that it hit out hard against Umno’s perceived arrogance and listed down an exhaustive list of grievances harboured by the Chinese and even other non-Malay communities.
Gerakan Deputy President Datuk Chang Ko Youn said he disagreed with Muhyiddin and that BN’s conventional practice of doling out allocations during elections no longer works as voters want problems to be attended to continuously.
“The more substantive issues of corruption, abuse of power and equity in national leadership and government delivery system must be dealt with first, only then will the voters who deserted the BN be ready to return,” Chang said.
Muyhiddin had said in an interview published in Mingguan Malaysia yesterday that the BN felt deceived by Chinese voters in the recent by-election in Bukit Gantang and that the voters should have been grateful for help given to Chinese schools and that the non-Malays see themselves as kingmakers in the current scenario where the Malay vote is split between three Malay based political parties — Umno, PAS and PKR.
In a separate interview in Utusan Malaysia published on April 10, the deputy prime minister said that the drop in support from the Chinese community was as if they did not appreciate what the BN has done for them.
The BN strategy of having separate campaigns for different ethnic communities was also criticised by Chang who urged the ruling Umno-led coalition to move away from ethno-centric campaigning and instead adopt cohesive, universal messages that appeal to all Malaysians.
He added that emphasis must be given to the prime minister’s slogan of One Malaysia, which emphasises mutual trust and respect among the different ethnic communities.
“The focus of uniting Malaysia under the One Malaysia ‘People First, Performance Now’ agenda is a winner because it promotes fairness and equity, and gives real meaning to the Barisan Nasional struggle,” he said.
Lee Wei Kiat, the head of the MCA information and communication bureau said that MCA “takes exception” to the deputy prime minister’s remarks and laid out a laundry list of issues that he believes have caused Chinese voters to turn away from the BN.
Issues such as abuse of the New Economic Policy (NEP), a largely mono-ethnic civil service, religious conversion issues, misuse of the ISA and “mob rule” tactics that disrupted civilised dialogue and forums were among the frustrations faced by the Chinese community, said Lee.
Touching on Umno’s arrogance, Lee said that acts such as waving the keris amid fiery speeches during the 2006 Umno party assembly and recent statements that Umno was the sole political party responsible for the nation’s independence, both committed by now defence minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, was still a sore point with the non-Malays.
“The image of the brandishing of the keris amidst talks of ‘bathing in blood’ which alluded to a civil war against a conjured enemy of another community still remains unforgivable,” said Lee.
“Moreover, convenient amnesia at the recently concluded Umno general assembly where an Umno supreme council leader obliterated the contributions of non-Malays towards independence asserting that Merdeka was forged by Umno and the Malay Rulers and nobody else, also fuelled dissatisfaction among the non-Malay communities.”
Hishammuddin has publicly denied that he had excluded the involvement of the MCA and the MIC in the process of attaining Malaysia’s independence. He has also said that the use of the Keris during the assembly will be discontinued.
He also pointed out that Umno was not able to convince the Malays to vote in sufficient numbers in order to ensure a BN victory in the Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections even though these two constituencies are Malay majority polling districts.
Lee also noted the astonishing change of sentiment in the Chinese community toward the Islamist party PAS, which is now part of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition, within the space of two general elections.
“In 2004, the Chinese overwhelmingly rejected PAS’s Islamist agenda of a theocratic state based on hudud and qisas which wreaked of amputating limbs, public lashing and requiring four men of good conduct to witness a rape before an alleged rapist was found guilty and gave the mandate to BN,” said Lee.
“In 2008, corruption, cronyism, perceived judicial bias, racial and religious discrimination and intolerance led the multiracial rakyat particularly those on the peninsular to favour the opposition.”
He said that if BN wanted to win back support, it would have to overhaul government policies so that every Malaysian citizen is accorded equality, which according to Lee, is guaranteed under Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.
“Malaysian citizens have the right to a decent life, free of bigotry, with the adoption of meritocracy and access to equal development where aid is delivered on the basis of need and not racial hegemony,” he said.
Lee’s comments are unlikely to be looked on favourably by his partners in Umno however.
The dominant party in the BN coalition feels that it has sacrificed a lot for its coalition partners which nevertheless, have failed to deliver the votes from their respective ethnic communities.
Many in Umno feel that MCA should not make demands until it delivers the votes.
Foreign Minister and senior Umno member, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim was reported to have remarked that MCA should not request for a second deputy prime minister post when the party is weak and unable to attract the majority of Chinese voters.
He said this in reference to MCA deputy secretary-general Datuk Loke Yuen Yow’s proposal for the creation of the posts of Chinese deputy prime minister and Chinese Barisan Naional (BN) deputy chairman.

Fingers pointing after the by-elections of the 2 Bukits by Umno
MCA, MIC and Gerakan are blamed by Umno cukup kuat sekali.
This allliance of BN will not last long.
Muhyiddin is quickening the process.
MCA with Umno is weak and will be weaken...
Because the Chinese voters after the rebuke by DPM
will swing completely and permanently against BN...no love lost.
MCA must cut their ties with Umno - fast and clean cut now.
Gerakan and MIC must do the same now.
Umno wants to go solo - let them.
All urban areas - city voters will reject Umno.
Rural Malays will accept Pas, for sure.
Umno is condemned...
Next general election, if Umno go solo and loses -
You can be quite sure, Umno after more than 50 years of greed...
They will not accept the results - Umno's logo has 2 keris,
Violence will be unleashed, May 13 will be repeated.
Umno declared state of emergency - they will take over federal government by coup d'etat.
Umno is expert with such tactics - they will emphasised ketuanan Melayu -
Malay is supreme...Umno is the defender of Malays.
Many will be taken to ISA - ketuanan Melayu is restored.
Whatever, let BN be imploded.
What do you think of such situation???

It's as simple as that! Because UMNO has a louder voice and makes brash statements which regards, bother or care whether such statements upsets other communities or not, it drives these communities away from BN. UMNO unbridal racist overtones is the main reason why MCA and MIC is suffering a "voters-drought". Who in their right mind would vote for a party who is seen as incapable of protecting their rights and interest against "big brother" within the coalition?
Until and unless voters can see these parties capable of protecting their rights and interest which had been so blatantly eroded over the years much to the detriment of these communities, no sane voter will ever return to these parties!

There is no hope for peace for Malaysians when the people ruling the nation are ‘confused, perplexed and puzzled’ why part of the populace show disdain towards it. They think tossing millions of ringgit to build Chinese lanaguage schools should do the trick for them. This as what they did and it worked for them in past. The Chinese now realise they have been taken for a ride but it looks like BN is still in ‘FantasyLand’.
Chiinese language schools are just that, schools! They are lifeless structures but here we are talking about human beings, emotional issues concerning the Chinese. These issues have been travialized the Chinese and Indians have been repeatedly used as cannon fodder especially during the UMNO's general assemblies.
I think Muhyddin is faking ignorance because in his very next breath, he issues a veiled threat by asking if the Chinese and the Indians are beginning to think they are now the kingmakers. With this type of arrogance how can the hearts of the non-Malaysbe swayed? Intimidation doesn't work!

We all know chinese and indians are the key groups that swing votes either for or against the ruling party. malays has always been divided into 3 major groups i.e. BN, PAS and recently Anwar sympathizers aka PKR. chinese and indian votes decided the outcome of 1999 (post Anwar reformasi) and 2004 (Pah Lah's mandate). Malay divide has been constant all these while. PAS supporters will always support PAS come rain or shine, no matter what is the manifesto.
PRU12 result was clearly was swing by chinese and indians. The fall of Penang, Perak and Selangor is a clear giveaway. Only time will tell what will happen in PRU 13. But it obvious that chinese and indian has significant power to swing the countries political landscape.

Moral of the story: The MCA, MIC, Gerakan are just like the dog. Howling away, but the pain isn't painful enough. Howling away from the 'familiarised uncomfortable zone'.

UMNO should ask themselves on why their support from the Malays has been deteriorating. It tells you that even the Malays are tired of the ways UMNO govern the country. Muhyiddin should step down as deputy prime minister since he has no clue why the BN is losing support across the board!

When the "Big Economy" hits the buffers and the voters feels the economic pain with no job, no money, they usually blame the ruling party. It is not just in Malaysia but practically in any country in the world. It is just a fact of life.
So, contrary to what CK said, in actual fact, these "Poor People" (as CK refers to the Rakyat), will want a change of government even more than ever before....
....which of course means that they will support and vote for non-BN parties even more, and will make an even BIGGER HEADACHE for BN! With luck, there's every chance the Opposition will win this time, hooray!!

Dear Mr Deputy Prime Minister, it is BN which has been "ungrateful" to the Chinese (as well as the Indians and other non-Malays) , not the other way around !!
For years, these people have been almost behaving like the "workhorses" of the country. They work hard, donated their taxes and contributed billions of ringgits to the Malaysian coffers, yet get paltry little in return. They kept low while you guys at BN (especially UMNO) makes racist policies that go against them, and you tried your best to separate them from Malay friends instead of uniting all as Malaysians.
Without their contributions of these people whom you call "ungrateful", Malaysia's economy would not have been what it is today. And all BN did was to treat them as if they are second class citizens. So who is ungrateful to whom?
Now, these people say, enough is enough. They say, we do not wish to be bullied any longer. We are going to excercise our right as Malaysians in the ballot box.
When they did that, you call them "ungrateful". What is so ungrateful about that? Do you not know anything about democracy?
In a democratic country, all citizens have a right to vote whichever party they see fit. It is up to the ruling party to feel "grateful" to their voters by giving good performance.
If that party does not perform, or worse becomes corrupt, it deserves to lose elections.
BN does not have the "Goddam" right to expect citizens to vote for them if they (the Rakyat) are unhappy with the party. If you do not know something as simple as that, how you can call yourself Deputy Prime Minister?
Maybe, that's why I do not think you are effective in that role. Really, for the sake of the country, please resign. You would do if you are "grateful" to your citizens - but somehow, I have this feeling you are not grateful to them, you never have!!! You just take them for granted.
written by Chin Lee USA, April 14, 2009
You are wrong to say that the Chinese are ungrateful for not supporting BN in the recent By-Elections. Please dont say this as you and your people in BN know that you all have been rejected not only by the Chinese but also by the Malays and Indians. This is the end of the road for BN unless you all do some miracles to gain the confidence of the people of Malaysia.
BN remain deaf to the voice of reasons and do not stand for all that is right, honest and self-evident. Leaders should be compassionate and caring and decisive beyond questions. Leaders must be patient, pesistent. consistent and persuasive rather that dictatorial. Only a few of the BN leaders belong to this type of leaders people trust.
Muhyiddin please dont talk too much, show what you can really do for Malaysia and dont judge others. When you judge another you do not define them, you define yourself. Also remember and bear in mind that a heart is not judged by how much you love but by how much you are loved by others.
Ever since you become the DPM you talked too much. You talk about Chinese, you asked the Indians to keep quite and l hope now you will ask MCA and GERAKAN to keep quite too. If you turn your light inwardly you will find what is esoteric within you. Take your defeats as a gentleman and dont blame the Chinese.
MCAand GERAKAN are slippery bunch of political opportunists and a bunch of posturing and back stabbing from a cabinet who all have their own campaign staff and eyes on higher offfice. What has this leaders represent other that erratic "brown knowsing" as what is called here in American.
Yes what has really happen to OTK & KTK who has been selected in Najib's Cabinet.? They are quite on the western front and happy with their appointments.
It often requires more ecourage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong. He who has the right needs not to fear, and truth is generally the best vindication against slander. For this l want to say to Chang Ko Yun of Gerakan and Lee Wei Kiat of MCA GOOD JOB for having the guts to disagree with Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin's statement clearly shows the wrong mentality in UMNO, that government handouts and funding is a form of vote-buying. Majority of rakyat is no longer blind as before. Those are in fact tax payers' hard earned money. The aim of the government should be here to govern and serve, not to buy votes and stay in power. Clearly, UMNO loses the plot as usual. They are not fit to govern.
On the other hand, Chinese and Indians do not make up the majority of the voters. Analyst says that BN has not achieved 60% of Malay votes. I think Muhyiddin is too afraid to call the Malay voters ungrateful (with NEP, fundings, etc) because that will backfire massively. He thinks that by hentam other races it will increase racial sentiment among Malay and the support for UMNO.
To me, it's a turn-off. At some point, UMNO will be Um-Gone, and BN will become DN (the end).

Umno has conveniently forgotten that Malaysia was founded for all Malaysians, the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Dayak, the Kadazen, the Dusan, etc and NOT just for the Malays. The BN's concept of power sharing is for all intents and purposes dead and no longer accepted by the people, after 50 years of lip-service and manipulation. Hence, MCA & Gerakan's memberships in BN are pure forms rather substance, they are there for window-dressing in terms of racial composition.
What Malaysians, especially the young generation, want from their government is pure and simple, they want a 'fair and just' society as envisaged by our founding fathers.

Do you think the chinese kids who grown up from Chinese school whom they always have to go out and ask for donation to build and extend their school will vote for you just because you give millions which you are suppose to still owe billions if you were to count by figures.
I am not sure if this New DPM still have some brain or brain dead.
Btw, pls don't forget to return our water concession to our selangor government soonest.

Why talk ungratefulness to the chinese, talk about your own race ,the malays, who dont even support you? If they had done so, you dont even need the non-bumis votes
Why,your own race dont support you???? Instead they preferred PAS or PKR.
It is because they see thro you- a team of corrupted, bigoted, racists who dont worship but only the dollar sign!
The signs are already there, ppl. Come GE13, we kick the corrupt out and send them on a one way ticket.
Malaysia Boleh.
