UPDATED
PEKAN, April 18 — Stung by four straight by-election defeats in the peninsula, Barisan Nasional might skip contesting the Penanti by-election if there is consensus among component parties.
It that happens, it would possibly be the first ever by-election not contested by the ruling coalition since Merdeka.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the ruling coalition will decide soon after getting feedback.
"Don't know yet (whether we opt out or not). We will look first, but I don't rule out any possibility," he told reporters here.
He added he would meet with the Umno supreme council and leaders from BN component parties to discuss the matter.
"I will raise the matter at the next Umno supreme council meeting. If I don't have the time, I will bring it up to the political bureau, and discuss with the BN component party presidents," he added.
He had earlier called it a wasteful process, saying people were tired of the slew of by-elections and the focus should be on the softening economy.
The Election Commission has said it will have to establish if the PKR-held Penang state seat is vacant after incumbent Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin sent a resignation letter on Thursday.
The embattled Fairus had earlier quit as deputy chief minister I after allegations of being involved in illegal quarries.
PKR is keen to have a by-election to decide Fairus's successor as deputy chief minister which has been reserved for the party.
It has two other Malay lawmakers in Penang but de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is not keen on them.
The Penanti seat is seen as a PKR stronghold as it is within Anwar's political fortress Permatang Pauh, which returned him to Parliament last August.
If the Election Commission does declare on April 24 to hold by-elections, it will be the third in the semi-rural state seat since March 2008.

That would have set a record, I never heard of any election where BN never participated- that would be making history.
After the defeats, now the safer bet is not to pour $$ into a losing battle.Same time get mileage that they are saving $$ for the tax payer.
The chess game continues!

held I believe that BN will be the fifth time loser. That is for sure. I for one until today do not understand
the meaning of 1 Malaysia. Why now?? How many Malaysias are there since 1957?? Nothing new. Every time a new guy sits in that position he comes up with a new slogan, merely for advertisement purpose.
Wake up Mr. you are a leader of a country and not the art director of an advertising company. Really
sick and tireD of what is going on in this country. Day in day out, in coffee shops, in taxis and almost
everywhere the people are just sick and tireD. Just read our lips Mr. Prime Minister "SICK AND TIRED"

Plus save the taxpayers a few million ringgits ... money better spent on reviving our economy.
By the way, before anybody starts bashing me, I voted PR at 308 and intend to do so in the next GE.
My message for UMNO/BN is to shape up. In the same breath my message to P K R is the same..... please have your slate of candidates cleaned-up by GE13 .... the learning curve has got to be really steep. NO time to waste. And mistakes should not be repeated. I'd rather that you guys clean up now. You SHOULD NOT give in to the implied threats from the former DCM ... if there are any dirty linens as he implies or insinuates , then please have them out and cleaned up. Do NOT sweep dirt under the carpet as some have been doing for many years. This will NOT to be tolerated. We can forgive some slip-ups... but for heaven's sake, just own up and clean up if anything is amiss.

Then again, you all earn so much money with corruption and shady deals.... so money shouldn't be a problem. After all, those millions your poured each time a by-election is mind boggling.... like accommodation and food for police.
But in the end, one result still remains.... BN will not win.
Therefore, giving up seems the best idea. Not. Now we all know you have no balls.....

That statement makes any reader feel like he is busy with his work. No time ka? I was taught by my illeterate boss that in whatever one does, one must make time. In other words, TIME MANAGEMENT! Seems like he doesn't have it.
By withdrawing, it is proof that they can't campaign without offering any goodies!
And knowing that the people are wise to their game, they can't come up with any new ideas to campaign and hence the withdrawal.
How I wish that this is the General Elections that we are talking about here now!

BTW if Umno contests this by-election, it will be "5 in a row defeat" in the Peninsula.
Don't contest and save all the millions.

You think the rakyat is blind is it?
The truth is BN skip by-election = scare lose face. PLAIN and SIMPLE.

It has never been written in stone that a byelection must be contested. I think Najib should order BN to stand down in the Penanti byelection, citing the fact that all BN machinery would be better put to use to help the rakyat in this current economic storm and the money saved by not having a contest can be put to use to help the growing unemployed in Penang.
Anwar and his cult followers will have a field day of course, will laugh until their throat get sore and will clap until their hand hurts, but so what its only a DUN election and still status quo in Penang DUN, its not like BN lost its parliamentary majority. The Penanti byelections is only a skirmish which the BN Army should ignore while gathering its strength and putting in a long term strategy for the real war in the 13th General Election.

- Why need few thousand of fru, police in by election ... you think rakyat nothing to do and riot ..
- The ballot box and other voting merchandise can be reusable .....
- The SPR staff has been paid salary by the rakyat , so no election means they nothing to do ....
- Why need to use helipcopters to monitor .. did PR use .. no is BN
- The location and voting booth are schools ... it is all free ...
- BN give so many mee segera when by election .. but all this are rakyat tax payer money .... what is the problem of giving the money back to the rakyat for development ...
I dont see why a small by election need to use millions and millions dolar .. BN please explain to the rakyat why expensive ..

I do not know if this is the work of UMNO discrediting/bribing PKR's candidate or Anwar Ibrahim just being sloppy with who he brings into the team/ drumming up the Reformarsi adrenaline to boost momentum all the way till the next GE.
But I'm sick of it.
Whatever his motives, if Najib pulls UMNO from this upcoming by-election then it will give a strong message.
This is purely my opinion.

Please remember that PM Najib is one who thinks through his strategies; just look at how he executed his tactics to overthrow the PR gomen in Perak . Do not be fooled again over his latest announcement of not wanting BN to contest the Penanti by-election.
Is it possible that PM Najib is now laying down his basis of NOT WANTING TO HOLD a SNAP ELECTION in PERAK with the new excuse that it is a waste of tax-payer's monie$ and to focus on the economy?.
To all opposition strategists out there , please put on your thinking caps to analyse PM's Najib strategy and think of what tactics, contingent actions or counter-measures that needs to be put in place in case this is a smoke screen to cover up another hatchet job!!

Pulling out may just be the wises thing you can do now to avoid another humiliating defeat.
