KUALA KANGSAR, April 19 – The Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah today said he would take on the primary responsibility of implementing all efforts to ensure that the institution of royalty which was core to the system of governance and nationhood in the country would continue to be protected.
“An offspring will not allow the dignity and sovereignty of a ruler to be ridiculed. As such the people must be conscious not to be hasty to throw the lamp away, as daylight too will end. “Let it not be that as night falls, people grope about directionless, blanketed in darkness without a lamp,” he said at the pledging of loyalty and awards ceremony in conjunction with the 81st birthday of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah at Istana Iskandariah here today.
He said the Malay rulers were not just symbols in the country but that the Malay Sultanate had an important role as the centre of strength for the people.
Raja Nazrin said the administrative system with Malay Sultanate as its core had been in place for more than 600 years and had succeeded in developing a great culture and civilization.
He said the wisdom of royalty aided the developmental process of intellectuality and from the palace emanated great works of art in writings.
“The Malay rulers are the symbols of sovereignty – the symbols of citizens’ strength – the umbrella for the country’s crown. The Malay rulers give identity to the nation. “People who understand the culture of monarchy, will understand the philosophy of royal administration, the role of rulers, especially the role and responsibility of holding up national identity,” he said.
He said the continuity of a race and the face of a nation depended on factors that gave it identity from the aspects of institutions, religion, culture and language.
“Actions of insulting institutions, ridiculing institutions, fermenting hatred towards institutions are early steps in the movement towards abolishing the institutions – therefore abolishing the original identity of the country’s race.
“During the Cold War, such steps came from groups who held on to left-wing political doctrine and were categorised as subversives.
“In the name of the Cultural Revolution in China and communist indoctrination in Cambodia and Vietnam, children were incited to extreme levels, hating and making enemies of their own parents; religious leaders were criticised and places of worship destroyed; some places of worship turned into places to breed animals; leading to anarchy that had to be paid with lives and blood; and the social fabric destroyed,” he said.
Raja Nazrin said the world now faced waves of globalisation – waves that hit all borders – to break down cultural walls and possibly drowning national history.
He said the younger generation which was being hit by the globalisation waves should be wise to balance claims of tradition and demands of modernity.
He said there were some who believed that to progress, focus must be on a progressive culture and they said that traditions and history would cause backwardness in a static culture.
“Globalisation actually brings waves of new colonialism to drown the traditions of a country, wiping out original identity.
“People must be aware that not all that is traditional hinders progress as tradition that is interpreted wisely and intelligently can function to bring progress.
“The cultural elements that have been factors of unity till this day are priceless social capital that should be defended,” he said.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and three others headed the the list of 800 recipients of awards and medals in conjunction with Sultan Azlan Shah’s 81st birthday. – Bernama

I for one have great respect for the rulers but when it comes to making certain decisions, they should also respect the RAYKYAT. It has to be a 2 way relationship. We all know how the Ruler came into being from the days of the past.
Just because they are the RULERS does not make them the almighty. The rulers have also got to EARN the respect of the RAKYAT.
A good example is the British Monarch. Do they huff and puff at the free press and the opinions of a few who are against them ? Do they throw these people in jail for sedition ?
Its only here, in our beloved country that the ruling parties use such draconian rules to keep the Rakyat in docile. But if one has heard what our esteeemed Nik Aziz has to say as to who has done more injustice to the Rulers, and we will know that the laws are lopsided.
Tradition will always be traditon. Holidays for the Rulers birthdays will always be held. Respect will always be given. But I am sure that the Rakyat wishes the same from the Rulers too.
As for the new ISTANA NEGARA, the RULERS must now show their disapointment at the government for building a RM1billion structure at economic times like these.
Even Najib has said that we have to binge. But spending RM1 Billion on a superficial structure at this time is definately not the way to earn the RAKYATS respect. After all.. this is only a ceremonial palace!

First off, it must be remembered that the monarchy is being supported by the Rakyat's taxes. That and that should never ever be forgot. Thus it behoves the monarchy to be relevant to the people.
This is the 21st century. Just as Britain's Windsor family has to change and modify their roles and style according to the times, so must the monarchies in Malaysia. The current question is whether the monarchy represents all Malaysians or less than than that?
Just remember, the taxes paid and used to support the monarchy could have been contributed to charities and aid to people in dire need.

He cites the palace's role in "the wisdom of royalty aided the developmental process of intellectuality and from the palace emanated great works of art in writings" yet does not give any examples of such contributions.
"Raja Nazrin said the administrative system with Malay Sultanate as its core had been in place for more than 600 years and had succeeded in developing a great culture and civilization." What great culture and civilization? We are worse off today than we were 600 years ago. Not to mention, as the saying goes, "All good things will come to an end" and "You've overstayed your welcome."
Respect and admiration must be earned from the people. The events of the past 2 - 3 months have demonstrated that any respect or admiration that was once bestowed upon the palace was squandered. What was once a proud and respected household is now one of ridicule.
His words today, as it has been for the last 3 months ring echoingly hollow.

That lamp must continue to illuminate
His most respected Royal Highness said, I remember, that monarchy emanates from the Rakyat in substance, and is based on constitution in democratic practice. HRH Raja Nazrin, in his royal wisdom, also said that all Malaysians must have a place under the Malaysian sun.
These are some of the core truths which the Perak royalty has elucidated to the general acclaim of Malaysians nationwide, and these loyal subjects expect the Royals to uphold and extend by monarchical persuasion. The consonance of the populace on these fundamental concepts also simultaneously and inherently enjoins royalty to clearly, coherently and consistently expound them by royal words and deeds.
Moreover, there is increasing popupar expectation of monarchy to show aversion to dark forces tending to subvert democratic and constitutional monarchy, in an environment where the nation is experiencing the birth pains of a new democratic awakening and immensely enlightened Malay and Malaysian nationalism to usher in a more progressive nationhood of the 21st century. All forms of appeal to unreasoned fear and resort to overt or subtle threats must be resisted by the highest courage, moral and religious rectitude.
Let not that Lamp flicker, much less let it be put out by dark forces.
Dr. Francis Ngu, Sarawak.

However, recent events when the palace have meddled in internal politics has started to erode the people's trust and confidence in the palace so much so that the idea of shackling the palace (something unheard of a few years ago) is fast gaining credence. The power of the royalty is so much as what the people are willing to give and tolerate. Once that trust has been breached, there is no going back to the old days of absolute impunity.
I suggest the learned prince learn from recent Thai history. It is not all that difficult actually.

While the constitution says the Ruler has a prerogative to appoint an MB, it has no prerogative to sack a sitting MB. A sitting MB could only be sacked if he refuses to resign after a motion of a vote of confidence has been passed in the Leg Assy. Even the prerogative to appoint an MB is subjected to check and balances. A Ruler can't appoint anybody he likes. He has to appoint the person who has confidence of the majority.
Until and unless, a Ruler stays out of politics, the institution of monarchy would be held with some reverance or relevance.

when he said not to be hasty to throw the lamp away as daylight
too will end.
However, after what had happened in Perak, when an elected Govt.
is toppled just by the mere hoppings of the 3 frogs,I just dont know
what to believe anymore..The right honorable ex-appeal Judge N.H.Chan
spoke about the Federal Constitution article 72,and as a layman,I cannot
understand how the High Ct. and Federal Ct..could rule in favour of UMNO/BN.
As in Selangor, what was revealed by Selcat on the numerous abuses by the
ex-MB Selangor, the ice cream man who visited all the disneyland in the world,
with his wife, children and maid, staying at Orlando Hotel suite costing RM10,000/-
a night at tax payers expense, then it is better to throw out the lamp and replaced
it with a torch light like Pakatan Rakyat, which gives a glimmer of hope to the real
meaning of democray, which is Govt.of the People,by the People and For the People.

For the past 50 years the sultans have been seen as just rubber-stamping whatever proposed by the government without even a squeal. The rakyat had been taken for granted while the sultans seemed to continue rubber-stamping with both their eyes closed.
Even when the government stripped them of their immunity against the law, only the Sultan of Johore tried in vain to stop the treason while the rest of the sultans just kept quiet again without a squeal. The "natang" issue in Terengganu was also just swept under the carpet while the sultans just put on blind eyes. The Perak debacle resulted in the sultan being seen as unfair and again there is purportedly some sort of rubber-stamping going on.
Of course the Raja of Perlis did not agree on Shahidan to be the MB, the Sultan of Terengganu rejected Idris Jusoh and the Sultan of Perak has to agree on Nizar. All these proved that the sultans really have some authority and not only that they should have used it long time ago but their rare show of power on the three appointments should be the inertia and the momentum that should continue and not be abruptly stopped and being seen as unfair in the eyes of the majority of the rakyat.
We all have the incompetent MACC, the police against the rakyat, the jugdes that could be bought, the half-past six public prosecutor, the biased Election Commision, the pariah main stream media, corrupt government, immoral business community, unreliable medical professionals, very bad builders and lousy civil servants. Please if we cannot improve all these, then we should at least have sultans who are seen to be fair and seen to be with the rakyat.
Ampun Tuanku.

They can seal our lips but they can't stop the ever increasing sickening feeling of hatred. Menteri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin's victory in Bukit Gantang is proof of his/PR's popularity despite all those 'goodies' dished out by UMNO aided by a platoon of PDRM presence at Changkat Jering to intimidate and unnecessary and unjustified tear-gas fire during Bkt Gantang By-Election.

With a majority of seats after the jump over by the three, the end result would have been the same but the Sultan would have not been blamed for it, as it would have been within democratic procedure.
Better still would be had the Sultan accepted the state assembly's dissolution and the call for fresh state elections.
The monarchy does have a role to play in being a stabilising factor in the political situation in the country but it must be seen to be impartial, like an umpire of a game.
Just look at the mess that just went on in Thailand, where different factions contending for power move their supporters to slug it out in the streets. Well, that could well be due to the ailing King and these interest groups, headed and funded by rich and powerful families jostle for power while claiming to be a force of democracy -- hoping perhaps to fill the vacuum when the King eventually passes away and that glue which holds most of Thai society together is gone.
To be that glue, our own royalty must be impartial, be seen to be impartial and above politics.

If that is the case then what has developed in Perak crisis must be resolved by law and the Constitution of Perak must prevail and the situation demands the the Sultan must dissolve Perak State Assembly. This is clear all other matters raised so far in His Speech is mere padding. Get to the crux of the issue; there is a constitutional issue that calls for resolution and the Sultan must abide by the Constitution.

Please do not demand respect.
What we want is fairness. When things are so chaotic in Perak and there is no clear authority to govern. GO BACK TO THE PEOPLE AND LET THEM DECIDE WHO THEY WANT TO GOVERN PERAK.
Tell me why this is stop. Why there is lack of transparency in the decision making the let to Nizar and his party been brought down. Since you (Raja Nazrin) volunteer to do more to improve the situation, can you please explain the action taken by the Perak Ruler to the Rakyat. Please be transparent about it. This is the 21st. century and we are no longer living in era where Ruler and Government can do what they like. Everything is accountable for their action. We want Rulers to be above politics so that when any party is unfair, the rulers will bring fairness to all and not to do the reverse.
So please show that you have to will to correct the situation in Perak. What the Perakians ask for is to return the the people to decide who they want to goven the state. That is all we want.

Things have come to a head that anyone who receives a Royal Title is now branded as having 'bought' the title for such and such an amount thus placing the Title Holder to ridicule and contempt. In fact people laugh at the back of Datos and Tan Sris because the background of many of these title holders are open to questions.

Again another great speech from the Raja Muda of Perak, the Raja Muda of our nation who i had almost the greatest of repect for. But looking at events in the recent past and how the LIGHT has been put out for the Rakyat of Perak, humbly i feel that the time for talk talk is over.
The Raja Muda must stop beating about the bush and call a spade, a spade, He must be fully aware who put out the LIGHT for the Rakyat of Perak and now engulf Perak in darkness. Sure he knows the answer and what is needed to relight the LAMP in Perak and bask the fair state in LIGHT once again.
Ampun, but it is not the Rakyat of Perak, who has in recent times put out the LIGHT in Perak. And as such it is not for the Rakyat, at the present to relight the LAMP. The Rakyat can only appeal to the one who put IT out to relight IT. But if this is not done soon, the Rakyat must then in the near future bring back the LIGHT to the present prevailing darkness in Perak.
The one who initially put out the LIGHT in Perak must be first given a chance to remove the present DARKNESS in Perak.
Ampun, beribu ribu ampun.

We all know how the Perak constitutional crisis was created. As a result, there are so many legal suits created. The judges are creating history for the speed they passed judgments. In spite of that there are still a few suits remain unresolved.
The Speaker will create a few more suits on 7th May 09 state assembly which notice has been issued. The Speaker can stop the assembly because the secretary has no right to call for the assembly. The Speaker can also stop the assembly because Nizar vs Zambry suit has not been settled- who is the legal M.B.?
Up till now, the assembly under the infamous tree where the three most important resolutions were passed, has not been challenged in court. Why?. I can only assume that the assembly under the tree is legal and B.N. is checkmated. The game is over.
Justice N.H. Chan has been criticising the judges in all his articles which have been published. In his latest article, he said that the 5 judges of the highest court of the land have passed a perverse judgment. Why is NH Chan not sued for contempt?
The only way to settle all these disputes is by dissolving the state assembly and let the people decide in the next election.
By 13th May 09 the state assembly will be dissolved automatically if all the judges are judging according to the laws. Only the Perak Sultan can order the dissolution of the state assembly earlier if he wants to gain the trust and respect of the people.

My twos sens worth is that the rakyat has no objection to the royalty, it is only the royal house inability (so far) to accept that some of the rakyat cannot stomach the back door pwer grabbing that has happened.
Why not dissolve the state assembly and let the rakyat decide once and for all? Make it a level playing field for all and really make the royal house above politics. Please make the royal house dignified again!
