Perak to buy new Protons to replace Pakatan's Camrys

IPOH, April 22 - The Perak state government will purchase a new fleet of Proton Perdanas for executive councillors to replace the Toyota Camrys bought by the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) administration.

"We will get them new and cheap. We have always believed in using the Proton cars because they are our national pride," Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Kadir said today.

He added that it did not matter what cars the state government officers drove for their personal use but when on official business, it was important to use the national car.

"We are aware that there were previous complaints on the high cost of maintenance for the vehicles. This is one of our concerns too.

"However, we will speak with Proton on how to better maintain the vehicles without forking out too much," he said.

The state's 16 Toyota Camrys, used by the previous Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government as their official vehicles, will be auctioned off at the State Secretariat's car park from 9.30am to 4pm from May 4 to 18.

The reserve price for each vehicle is at RM148,000.

Zambry said former mentri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin will be given firts preference in the auction for his official car.

Noting Nizar's interest to bid for the car, Zambry told a press conference here that he was glad the latter had decided to do so.

"At least he won't have to drive the car around illegally any longer," he said.

He added that the BN government was a "courteous" administration and would therefore give the state's former mentri besar due respect.

"Even if there is a higher bidder for the car, we will give Nizar first preference because we understand that he was the former mentri besar," he said.

When asked if Pakatan Rakyat's former exco members would also be given top priority to purchase their former Toyota Camrys, Dr Zambry said:

"You have to ask them if they are interested in buying the cars. However, we would usually give them priority."
