LAMPETER (Wales), May 2 — Regardless of the state of the monarchy in Malaysia, a society that wants to move forward should shed medieval and feudal traditions, said former Perlis mufti Mohamad Asri Zainul Abidin.
"Citizens should have the right to criticise the Rulers. In Islam, there is no such thing as any person who is above criticism," he told The Malaysian Insider when asked about the issue of derhaka, or betrayal, that has become a point of contention amongst Muslims in the country.
The issue of derhaka came into prominence in February after Sultan Azlan Shah refused to dissolve the Perak assembly upon the request of the then Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin.
The Sultan of Perak later appointed Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir as mentri besar after installing Barisan Nasional as the state government. Certain quarters, especially BN, have tried to convince the public, especially the Malays, that criticising or disputing the decisions of the Rulers was tantamount to treason.
DAP chairman Karpal Singh, having stated that the Sultan could be sued along with the new BN state government, is now facing a sedition trial.
The maverick Islamic scholar, who has a strong following among young Muslims in Malaysia, said that the idea of being Malay and Muslim should be decoupled and addressed separately.
Speaking at his home in Lampeter, he disagreed with the conventional understanding that Malays have been Islamised but instead that they have "meMelayukan (to influence with Malay) Islam."
Asri, who was mufti for two years before quitting the position to move to Wales last December to research on Islam, was no stranger to controversial statements in his time as mufti. He became an icon for progressive Muslim voices for his stand against the propensity of religious authorities to conduct raids on Muslim couples engaged in khalwat, or close proximity, and has stated that non-Muslims had a right to use the word "Allah".
Asri said that Malays had to stop equating Islam with the Malays.
"If Malays want to defend their rights, go ahead based on Bumiputera rights or whatever. But you cannot say Islam does not defend you because you are Chinese or Indian. Islam was not given just to the Malays.
"Do not in your efforts to defend Malay rights relate it to Islam. Islam was not sent down by God to protect Malays but all of humanity," he explained, saying that such moves in the past had caused non-Malays to be fearful of the religion as it appeared to be intent on removing their culture.
During the interview, Asri expressed his consternation over ideas that have taken root in Malaysia under the guise of Islamic principles.
"Sometimes there are terms which we cannot understand. Daulat (sovereignty) for example. What is the meaning of daulat? Does this mean that if you criticise a Ruler, then you will be cursed by God? This is not in Islam," he said.

I haven't seen many of these hypocritical politicians who keep on spouting religious verses to show how religious they are but at the side, sleeping with young starlets, taking money from the poor, murdering and pillaging others...
Race, Religion and Politics should be and must be separate. As long as they are interlinked, there will always be rich religious political leaders.

Anyone reading this article and the coming supposed interview ,whether they are muslim or not, must at first understand the basis and fundamentals of Islam in the right perspective or they will be misled and confused or choose to ignore the essence of the truth about Islam due to various reasons including politics.
The ALMIGHTY ALLAH brought down the religion to the Universe through ALL the prophets from Adam right to Muhammad(s.a.w) and ALLAH is for all human and non human-kind who wishes and wholeheartedly embrace the religion of ALLAH.It surpasses all humanly-form, namely Borders,Region,Countries,Politics,Way of life,Economy etc.
All this are for the sake of the humankind and all, so that they will be safe, loving, secured, wealthy,at peace and ease with each other, and most of all ,sail through this worldly affairs for a journey towards a lasting after-world endeavour.
Hopefully those interested in this topic TMI and Dr Asri is trying to bring about will get a better picture as to the latest argument about the use of ALLAH in non-Islamic articles and other issues relating politics and the Ruler.

He hit the nail to the head where it hurts most:
"Islam was not given just to the Malays...Do not in your efforts to defend Malay rights relate it to Islam. Islam was not sent down by God to protect Malays but all of humanity"
Bring him back to Malaysia, Malaysia needs an enlightened scholar like him to illuminate out the enveloping darkness.

if 1 day i were to want to convert myself to Islam, this is the man i will seek to convert me. not many of this kind of Islam people here in malaysia but it is improving, the TRUTH begin to prevail slowly & strongly (i love people like Asri & Nik Aziz). this kind of people do not know how to lie (they dont need to). there are alot of this kind of TRUTH follower growing. TRUTH God's Followers will alway understand the TRUTH & tell the TRUTH (could consider it a Sin if you know the TRUTH & try hide it without other True good reason behind it). it is so NATURAL for them to tell the TRUTH. to this kind of people, they are very 'LUSTFUL' to tell the TRUTH (for them to tell the TRUTH is same as the eagerness for human to have a proper sex session).
btw, TRUTH are alway Ugly, only Lies are Pretty. Truth can actually hurt, but telling TRUTH was NEVER a Sin even it hurt so bad. if you make people happy by Lying to them, most of the time it is a Sin to do that.

Jangan ikut Tuah kerana Tuah bersikap betoi bendoi..setia membabi buta..sanggup menjalani hukuman bunuh walaupun ia telah difitnah..menganggap sultan lebih daripada Allah.
Kena ikut kebijaksanaan Tun Perak yg menyorok Tuah kerana beliau tahu ini semua angkara fitnah.
Apabila Sultan berkata.."Kalaulah Tuah Masih Hidup"...Tun Perak terus menyambut.."Ampun Tuanku patik mohon SEMBAH DERHAKA sebenarnya Tuah masih......."
Jebat berkata kepada Tuah..."Raja Adil Raja Disembah, Raja Zalim Raja Sanggah".
Tuah menjawab.."Pantang Melayu Menderhaka"

today is 2009, Era of Cyber Space. to me it is sort of era of the Truth. all the TRUTH that human (scientist/genius) has been gathering/researching/recorded/proven untill today are all there for you to seek (the TRUTH) in the Internet, if you know how to.
if anything you felt, you are 101% sure (without flaw), that is the real TRUTH, no matter where it comes from. it might have comes from Quran, Bible, Mosque, Church, Holy Temple, the malay, the chinese, the indian, the animals (chicken, cow, dog, pig), anything or any legend. as a long as it is 101% sure (without flaw/best if it can be supported by scientific proof), that is the TRUTH, the Real TRUTH but nothing but the TRUTH.

Another point observed by Inche Asri is that the Royalty is not beyond reproach or criticism. This is again simple common sense. If the Sultans breach the law or constitution why can’t they be criticized or taken to court in accordance with law particularly when there are provisions in the law to do so?
I think most of the Sultans are noble and honourable with the welfare and wellbeing of the rakyat uppermost at their heart. It is the cunning politicians holding power who drag the Sultans and some of their greedy children into mud by giving them million, if not, billion dollars worth of business concessions in every sector of the economy. If the Royalty were to be apolitical and not beholden to the political masters, they should de-link themselves from business interests. In short cut the unseen umbilical cord between Royalty and UMNOputras. Will Najib and the Sultans agree to this?
One way to do this is for the Royal Houses to sell away their business assets for liquid cash for them to keep, and to give an undertaking to the Government and the rakyat that they and their family members will not, any longer, indulge in business or seek business deals or concessions from the Government. The Government, on its part, should up the annual royal purse for the Sultans and their households, to appropriate levels as required. Can we see Royalty bouncing back to its pristine past?

Why the non Muslim in Malaysia think Islam is just for the Malay? Islam is for all mankind and everyone are born muslim (Fitrah) .There are more Muslim in China and India than in Msia. Every Muslim should follow AlQuran and Hadith as reference and any non Malay and non Muslim can access and study them.

Correct or not???

our rulers must understand their god-given privilege and the obligations that go with it. not only should they fromseek guidance from the quran and the sunnah, but also the spendid examplesof the first four rightly-guided caliphs. abu bakar as-siddiq's acceptance speech as leader of the ummah after the death of muhammad s.a.w. should provide a good strt:
"I have been given the authority over you, and I am not the best of you. If I do well, help me; and if I do wrong, set me right. Sincere regard for truth is loyalty and disregard for truth is treachery. The weak amongst you shall be strong with me until I have secured his rights, if God wills; and the strong amongst you shall be weak with me until I have wrested from him the rights of others, if God wills. Obey me so long as I obey God and His Messenger. But if I disobey God and His Messenger, ye owe me no obedience. Arise for your prayer, God have mercy upon you."

The 21 Feb 2005 issue of the Times magazine wrote :
"The Windsors are .. not a normal family. Their family business is staying in business, which in a democratic age means convincing the taxpayers that a hereditary monarchy is worth having."
"..Intolerance is not far from indifference, and for an institution with no real power except the power to impress, indifference is the unkindest cut of all. The Windsors need not be icons, and they should not be hell-raisers, but for their own survival they cannot afford to leave their subjects - ad the world - bored."
"In an age obsessed with celebrity, the royals' many public scandals - affairs, bulimia, drugs, Nazi armbands - have offered all the meretricious thrills of a reality-TV soap opera."
"It doesn't bother me that they (Charles and Camilla) 're going to get married and it doesn't bother me if they are not going to get married. No one interferes in my life, so why should I interfere in theirs?" "The Camilla era may be offering the prospect of a new compact between monarch and subject : live and let live".
"Queen Elizabeth pledged to her people that "my whole life shall be devoted to your service" and so it has been."
Malaysian royals should get more involved in more charitable fund-raising for worthy causes. And volunteer charitable bodies should not hesitate to get the royals to work for them to raise funds.

Shannon, why do you have to go to Wales just to get a redundant opinion? You are just wasting money and suddenly everybody seems to agree with Asri and you become a hero?
UMNO even used the word "natang"! Mahathir stripped them of their immunity! So what is the big hoo haa about criticising the rulers. All of you must be dreaming! Shannon, maybe you are sleeping on the job, of course not the blow-job.
