Pak Lah made MAS advisor as Najib avoids potential minefield

By The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — The Najib administration has manoeuvered around a potentially delicate situation: making Tun Abdullah Badawi the advisor to Malaysia Airlines today and keeping Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Petronas advisor.

Tradition is for a recently retired prime minister to be given the prestigious advisor position in the national oil company.

But the government did not want to stir a hornet’s nest.

To avoid friction between the two former prime ministers and their supporters, Abdullah will also not use the Perdana Leadership Institute as his office but instead operate from another house in Putrajaya.

The Perdana Leadership Institute was set up in 2003 and Dr Mahathir has been using it as his office since.

The Malaysian Insider understands that at last week’s cabinet meeting, a discussion was conducted about the positions to be offered to Pak Lah.

The cabinet of Datuk Seri Najib Razak had also decided that Abdullah would play an advisory role at the Malaysian Islamic Understanding Institute (IKIM) as well as serve as an advisor for the various growth corridors which were set up during his tenure as PM.

The idea is for Abdullah, as a former chairman of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), to strengthen the economic linkages between the Middle-east and Malaysia, especially in Islamic finance as well as oil and gas.

In that capacity, Abdullah will be making his first trip this week to Saudi Arabia.

Ties between Dr Mahathir and Abdullah had soured during the latter’s tenure as PM.

Dr Mahathir had grown increasingly critical of Abdullah’s leadership and had even suggested his hand-picked successor was dismantling his legacy.

Last year, Dr Mahathir blamed Abdullah for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) worst ever electoral performance.

He also quit Umno and only rejoined recently when Najib took over as the new PM.

Najib’s administration has been mindful of the sensitivities surrounding the two former leaders and is eager to be seen as inclusive in handling the two men and their supporters.
