KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — The Najib administration has manoeuvered around a potentially delicate situation: making Tun Abdullah Badawi the advisor to Malaysia Airlines today and keeping Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Petronas advisor.
Tradition is for a recently retired prime minister to be given the prestigious advisor position in the national oil company.
But the government did not want to stir a hornet’s nest.
To avoid friction between the two former prime ministers and their supporters, Abdullah will also not use the Perdana Leadership Institute as his office but instead operate from another house in Putrajaya.
The Perdana Leadership Institute was set up in 2003 and Dr Mahathir has been using it as his office since.
The Malaysian Insider understands that at last week’s cabinet meeting, a discussion was conducted about the positions to be offered to Pak Lah.
The cabinet of Datuk Seri Najib Razak had also decided that Abdullah would play an advisory role at the Malaysian Islamic Understanding Institute (IKIM) as well as serve as an advisor for the various growth corridors which were set up during his tenure as PM.
The idea is for Abdullah, as a former chairman of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), to strengthen the economic linkages between the Middle-east and Malaysia, especially in Islamic finance as well as oil and gas.
In that capacity, Abdullah will be making his first trip this week to Saudi Arabia.
Ties between Dr Mahathir and Abdullah had soured during the latter’s tenure as PM.
Dr Mahathir had grown increasingly critical of Abdullah’s leadership and had even suggested his hand-picked successor was dismantling his legacy.
Last year, Dr Mahathir blamed Abdullah for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) worst ever electoral performance.
He also quit Umno and only rejoined recently when Najib took over as the new PM.
Najib’s administration has been mindful of the sensitivities surrounding the two former leaders and is eager to be seen as inclusive in handling the two men and their supporters.

Why do we need to make these ill-qualified people anything? I agree with swipenter, but not make him the Director of the research but the subject of the research to learn how anyone can be so dumb and sleepy all the time.

We all know that Pak Lah no longer has access to the new government's executive jet that he 'leased' for himself during his time, under the pretext that the PM and Agong cannot share the same executive jet because of busy schedule between them.
Pak Lah has zero intellectual capacity to run any institution, be it government or private sector. Considering that he completely screwed up the election for Barisan Nasional, why on earth should the party reward him anything at all.

Tell us, the TAXPAYER, how much the whole package costs - salary, allowance, Govt car & driver, overseas travel entitlements, bonus, entertainment, annual leave etc and if he has to pay tax on it.
Then we'll decide if it's worth it.
But off-hand? Nah, his Govt pension should be enough for him. He does not deserve the job of Advisor to MAS - he knows nothing about the industry and does not deserve it on any MERIT bassi!!

najib's brilliant idea? this will not stop mahathir from firing away... just you wait and see.
najib - 1Malaysia? whoever thinks he's sincere to the country, think again. all his moves are either to please mahathir, pak lah and not to displease mahathir and pak lah; to hoodwink the malaysian people, c'mon... get real.

in fact, you see the swaying palm trees around MAS HQ? that's from the huge sigh of relief from the MAS board & snr management that they got pak lah instead of mahathir!
in fact, i'd rather if pak lah at PETRONAS given how critical it is to the nation. having mahathir as a 'consultant' must be like working under damocles' sword for the PETRONAS board! the mahathir ego- knows no bounds!

Mas has finally found the right person to depend on for long haul flight...and also quick nap for short fight too. Another think is how to sleep with the eyes open!....very tricky but can be perfected by consistant practise!

Thanks to DS Najib for appointing Pak Lah as advisor to MAS. During his tenure as PM Pak Lak may not been very aggressive leader. He is not charismatic orator. He doesn’t do “anything and everything” to be in power as his predecessor. If some want to write about Malaysian democracy and People’s power; one has to start as “Before and after Pak Lah”.
Not for Pak Lah DS Anwar probably died in prison. Just imagine DS Najib as succeeded Tun Mahathir, do you imagine DS Anwar will be MP and Opposition leader? Can anyone imagine of having Bersih rally? Hindraf historical gathering? If Pak Lah just continued Mahathir regime, he still had been PM.
After general election Pak Lah has accepted peoples view and he set a date to relinquish his position by 2010, but Muhiddin can’t wait till then to be a DPM, he had made his attach on him, Pak Lah has respected UMNO members ‘grateful ‘action and gracefully have left his UMNO leader and PM position, and at this point I think it’s unnecessary to insult him on his appointment as MAS and other agencies advisor.
Pak Lah may not be the right man in to Malaysian Politics but he is a MAN. Mohanan Perumal, London

IS HE AN AIRLINE ADVISER OR AIRLINE LEACH?
Why does MAS want someone who has no experience of airline management to advise the company?
Is that not typical of the UMNO/BN govt. in publicly rewarding (some brave souls might secretly even alleged it as a "bribe" but who dares say that outwardly) its own cronies?
MAS has enough problems and challenges on its plate with the global economic downturn and the nose-dive in airline business. Now, it has an extra leach in the form of an ex-PM to suck more blood out of the airline.
President Mugabe must be so pleased that there are corrupt regimes other than Zimbabwe. No wonder he has made Malaysia one of his favorite countries.
The sooner the BN/UMNO govt. gets replaced, the better. We need this BN "circus" to end - and the clowns sent off packing !

Some of them are already enjoying multi-pensions for holding different posts and still we need to support them?

1) Every MAS aircraft must have a VIP room with a water bed for him to sleep during his trips. No matter how far the journey - even from Subang Airport to KLIA.
2) All the First Class seats are now King-sized beds, while Business class are Queen-sized. Economy? One single bed placed 90 degrees upright, so everyone sleeps while standing.
3) There's many types of beds available.... normal, soft, hard, rectangle, square, circle, with vibrators... you just need to pay a few extra bucks more!

MAS should take out an advert to show Pak Lah sleeping soundly in their 1st class sleeper with the caption 'If our exPM can sleep soundly in flight, anyone can do it' That would be the best selling point

Hey, could you all stop humiliating him. He is an expert on Circadian Rhythm and could advice Idris Jala the techniques on prevention of onset fatigue and insomnia. Physiologists and Aviation Scientists have found a pattern of our body-clock that could endanger safety when not properly managed. Now, MAS employees only need to work 8 hours and to take 16 hours of Rest (within 24 hours cycle) as Work drains out energy from all viscera organs that need to be replenished.

no, we cannot stop najib from wasting tax payers money. I am talking about people giving him credit for 'his few good early moves' during his first days as the PM. to those who thinks his 'liberalisation' of the economy and doing away with bumi quotas are good moves, PLEASE WAKE UP AND DON'T GET FOOL AGAIN! 50 tahun tak cukup kah? they are not going to defend bumi rights, they are not opening up the economy etc.... all these are just a masquerade, BN goons are going to continue to enrich themselves. those who sing their praise... c'mon, let's face it, you get fooled once more but that's OK, just put a stop to it.
parpukarii's right... let's bet!

He may not be a capable Prime Minister but he has initiated changes that are now unraveling the misdeeds of BN. Like most political regime, Absolute power corrupts Absolutely !
We can only hope that by the time PKR is in power, they would have already learnt from Barisan their mistakes.
