UPDATED 3pm
PUTRAJAYA, May 8 — The remaining three Hindraf leaders and 10 others are to be freed from detention under the Internal Security Act in the next few days but Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein declined to give reasons for the release.
The three Hindraf leaders are P. Uthayakumar, T. Vasanthakumar and Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan. Two others were among 13 freed when Datuk Seri Najib Razak became prime minister on April 3.
"I will be signing the papers now," Hishammuddin told a specially-arranged press conference, adding they "no longer needed to be held".
Apart from the three Hindraf leaders freed, the others are three Malaysians, two Indonesians and five Filipinos.
Manoharan last week threatened to quit his seat which he won in the last election despite being held in the Kamunting Detention Centre.
The five Hindraf leaders were detained in December 2007 after mounting a massive street protest on Nov 25 which saw tens of thousands of Indians taking to the streets in Kuala Lumpur.
In an immediate reaction to the announcement, PKR’s Kapar MP S. Manickavasagam said he is happy with the decision.
“I feel that what had happened in Perak has placed the BN government in bad light so this is the right time for them to make the announcement. However I hope that the release of the Hindraf leaders would be an unconditional one,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
However, he believed the home minister would not release them with political conditions as Uthayakumar would not agree to it and would prefer to stay in Kamunting than cave in to demands made by the BN government.
When asked if he thought that the release would shift the support of the Indian community back to MIC, Manickavasagam said that is most unlikely to happen as the spirit to fight for justice is still strong within the community.
MIC Youth, in a statement today, said it welcomed the home minister's announcement and thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
It said the release would help the party, which has lost the support of the majority of the Indian community, to regain their trust.
"We sincerely hope that the Indians would return en masse to support MIC, the sole Indian representative in the Barisan Nasional coalition," it said, adding that MIC Youth would now go the ground to promote the efforts of the Najib administration which, it claims, has been proactive to the needs of the Indian community.
Former de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, a vocal critic of the ISA, said he was very pleased with the government's decision and congratulated Hishammuddin.
"And I hope that there will be more releases and, of course, I also hope that there will be no more arrests in the future," he said.
Although the timing of the decision, in the heat of the political upheaval in Perak, would appear to many as being politicially motivated, Zaid says he does not care.
"It may be but I don't really care. I am pleased by this decision," he said.

Maybe BN is that panicky about by-elections. If Manoharan quits, another by-election BN will LOSE, and based on the Perak fiasco, BN will probablu LOSE BIG, maybe even their deposit!
What a pathetic bunch of idiots we have running the country now! It's worse than the mafioso. At least with the mafiosos, they command some respect.
Here, our leaders are scorned and ridiculed!
So sad . . . so sad . . . embarassed to be called a Malaysian!

The release of the ISA detainees is a right step, and times with Wesak Day.
As for the HINDRAF trio, let it not be 'hijacked' again by Samy Vellu who may jump the bandwagon to say that it was his 'continued' recommendations that resulted in the release.
That crazy, senile fellow will always try to take credit from others.
In this case, it was the government's decision and the authorities must tell Samy Vellu to just shut up instead of trying another stunt by claiming that it is to his credit.
By the way, is the release also to cushion the 'wide' publicity BN got for yesterday's episode in the Perak state assembly? I hope not.
And is Manogaran being 'persuaded' to join BN through this release?
Hope the BN does not dream on this matter.
Not all are like Hee and not all need 'gaming money' that is recovered through special draws authorised by the Ministry of Finance.
Many still have principles and this number is growing day by day, thanks to the antics of the BN, its buddies like the enfocement agencies, civil servants and the manistream media.

Malaysans have awaken from their slumber and they shall not sleep with the devil ever again. UMNO is a racist autocracy disguising as democrats when it serves UMNO. Vote out UMNO.

Now you are showing "sympathy" by relasing them.... but too late, MIC is already terkubur!

Unless he releases ALL unconditionally, close Kamunting & repeal the law, this is just another chess move using detainees as pieces.
Unfortunately, shorted sighted MPs like Manickavasagam are naive enough and just racially biased enough to celebrate anything that resembles 'justice' for his community, it is sad, it is because of such short-sightness that we are stuck where we are for 50 years. He should instead continue to pile on the pressure and point out that the rakyat is not stupid, arresting 60 in Perak, a couple in KL & Kuching, including lawyers doing their jobs, followed by token releases of ISA detainees is just a game, we are not stupid enough to swallow it. Too bad the same cannot be said of the MP.

Only then will the rakyat be satisfied.
Obviously they were pressured to do this to avoid another by-election, and for no other reason. What a bunch of chickens.

This timing is taking away the focus on the angry reactions of the public regarding yesterday's historic incident in Ipoh.
Now the mainstream media will play up this release on its front page and the TV stations will be interviewing the relatives of the released ...and thats the news for today and tomorrow.
Very bad lah these people - they do not even want Khariy's statement about the Perak incident to be in the limelight. Khairy thought he was clever in coming out with a statment to support the BN. See what his former No 1 in UMNO youth has done. A classic check-mate. Sorry Khairy, try harder.

It is the pressure that worked, not so much of the sincerity of the government.
In the very first place, there shouldn't have been any draconian and highhanded action by the government.
Ask the detainees if the detention was effective in "reforming" them? Your guess is as good as mine.
There was so much anger, sadness, disillusionment and disappointment when the detainees were taken away from their families, and the reason for them to be detained was voicing their grievances and problems.
Let there be no repeat of such blunders and blatant disregard for human dignity and honour.

Let's conduct a poll. Vote (+) if you agree; otherwise vote (-).

So you mean we have a,
Catch, then release, then catch again, and now release again.
Nice way of generating good press.
No wonder the police have no time catching Mat Rempit. Police man power is tied in catching and recatching the same political activist, their lawyers, ahli parlimen, and ADUN.

The release of the remaining 13 ISA is the best news so far. However, the real intentions are unknown. Would Manoharan still quit now that he's gonna be freed? Would these same people be recaptured later when the dust has settled? Is there a hidden agenda ... or is the BN sincere in releasing them. Why only now not together with the rest earlier? What's the Home Minister hiding from us?
Whether the release is temporary, sincere or not, what matters most now is that they're now FREE, and are no more a threat to the country. They could go back to their families and lead their normal lives.
Next step for Najib - abolish ISA.

Thank You Datuk Hishamuddin Tun Hussain Onn. After the Kris incident l has never liked you. But today feel want to meet you and shack hand with you. I think it will be the feeling of most politically neutral stand Malaysian Indians.
The reason is simple, the five heroes was just high lighting Malaysian Indians 50 years cry. Government arrested them, but then started to implement most of their request without admitting it was fruits of their struggles. Your realise order is implied admission of the fact. Thanks You.
I hope you will have the wisdom to withdraw the sedition charges against Mr.Uthaya Kumar. And make him truly free man. Please don’t make the kind of jokes like,”It’s up the AG champers”
As DS Najib admits everyone make mistakes, if the UMNO lead BN honestly admit, they have suppressed Indians and now regret for their past sins. In the new sprite, they genuinely want to up lift Malaysian Indians and make sure there are no more brutal killings of Indians in police station.
I don’t see any reason, why not Indians come back and support BN’s “HONEST AND GENUINE” efforts. I categorically repeat “HONEST AND GENUINE” efforts.
Ask Dato Zaid say, although the timing of the decision, in the heat of the political upheaval in Perak, would appear to many as being politically motivated, I too not care. I am pleased with the decision.

Our PM should not be like Dr.Mahathir, who did not tolerate criticism during his term as PM. Better to be like Tun Badawi who was so humble in the face of unfair criticism. Even when his 'friends' turned against him, he still held an olive branch. He did not resist even when he was challenged, but preferred to retire prematurely without a fight. He is a true gentleman.
True Mr.PM, if the Govt make mistakes they should apologise and rectify them and not make more mistakes to cover up one stupid mistake.
The BN has to make amends for the trillions of mistakes they made over the years, before the people can trust them again. I dont think the BN can do enough to clean themselves up before the next general election. Their short term, reactive behaviour is not going to help to win back the support of the people. The BN especially UMNO may have to sit out for the next two general elections before they can sufficiently repent, grow up and mature into true people oriented politicians. They need to die to their greed & arrogance before they can transform themselves into real decent human beings.

Why don't right now?!!!
It's time for the Government to repeal ISA and replace with Terrorism Act. The minister who drafts the Bill must use the correct terminology in order to prevent arbitary power. If not, such Bill will have the same results as ISA.
written by swipenter, May 09, 2009
We as rakyat must keep up the pressure on the govt to address the abuses committed under the Act and to give the rakyat solid assurances that such abuses are not going to happen again. But the only sure way is to scrap the ISA and replace it with an anti terrorist act.
The govt must realise that those rakyat holding different views from the official ones are just as responsible and loyal to the country. We all cannot by nature have same views otherwise there wouldnt be a need to strive to better ourselves and for outsiders to check and balance our own views, actions and decisions. Start engaging the raykat instead of confronting us with repressive and coercive laws and you can definitely see what a difference that can do to your image.

What difference is there in not releasing the 3 hindraf together with the first batch?. After 30 overdays the Home ministry manage to turn them over and no longer a thread to "society"?. Is this Hisham answer to the rayat?. Or you release the 3 hindraf under UMNO pleasure?. Saya rasa siok, saya release mereka?.
