KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The worsening crisis in Perak is fast becoming a political runaway train that is lurching out of control for the Barisan Nasional government.
Unless the paralysis in Perak is quickly resolved, the crisis could define the first 100 days in office of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and distract his administration's attention away from managing the slumping economy, analysts and politicians say.
Already, several senior politicians from Najib's own ruling Umno party are calling on the government to dissolve the state assembly and pave the way for fresh elections.
Calling for fresh polls, former Umno vice-president Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah wrote in his widely followed blog: “At this stage, there is no other way to restore both public confidence and constitutional legality to the Perak state government and, by extension, our entire system of government.”
For now, Najib is reluctant to go down that path because a drubbing for BN in a snap poll is a foregone conclusion.
There is also the question of personal pride. Najib personally led the campaign to wrest power in Perak in early February, just weeks before being installed as premier.
To back down now could be interpreted as political weakness by his followers in his embattled party.
But as the crisis worsens, many analysts and senior politicians say that his government's determination to cling on to power amid growing public opprobrium will only enhance the franchise of the opposition coalition.
The Perak impasse has also raised concerns over the independence of institutions such as the civil service, the country's security agencies and the justice system.
Last week's shocking removal of the Speaker of the state assembly — who is from Pakatan Rakyat — by government security personnel, as well as the arrests of opposition supporters, prompted a surprisingly sharp reaction from the state-backed Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, better known as Suhakam.
“It somewhat makes us wonder whether service to the people is subordinated to service to political interests,” Suhakam's chairman Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman, who was also one of the country’s longest-serving attorneys-general, said in a statement.
Echoing a view shared by politicians from both sides of the divide, he also noted that “perhaps the time has come for the people of Perak to be given the opportunity to exercise their right to choose again the government of their choice”.
The power grab has also inadvertently boosted the popularity of the opposition, particularly PAS.
A key beneficiary has been the ousted Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin, who is from PAS.
The soft-spoken politician has succeeded in capturing the imagination of the Perak people with his populist policies.
More importantly, Nizar's stoic response to the Umno-led onslaught, which among other things included labelling him a traitor to the Malay community, has improved the political standing of PAS as a national party that can be counted on to protect the interests of non-Malays.
BN and Najib were presented with an opportunity to stop the Perak runaway train this week. The High Court's decision on Monday to declare Nizar as the rightful menteri besar and Nizar's call for fresh state elections offered a way out of the mess.
For sure, the outcome would not have been ideal because fresh state elections would undoubtedly see the ruling coalition get soundly defeated at the ballot box.
Still, it would have removed Perak from the national agenda and allowed the ruling coalition to focus its attention on renewing its appeal among voters.
By digging its heels in over Perak, the Najib administration is only providing the opposition with ammunition against the government that will last it until the next general election, which must be held before 2013.
As the saying goes, opposition parties do not win elections. Governments lose them. — The Straits Times

Rights and Freedom are inherent in man.
All Perakian want to resolve the crisis by election and NOT by courts.

He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His political ascendency in Umno has much to do with piggy-back riding on the back of established Umno politicians. He piggy-backed on them and just moved along with them. On his own, he is nothing.
Now as PM, he needs Mahathir to tell him what to do. And everybody knows the kind of person this mahathir shit is. There will trouble in malaysia as there is trouble in Perak. Najib can't diffentiate between right and wrong and between doing the right thing or the wrong thing.
No bigwig in Umno backs him in the Perak issue. They viewed his as a big clown. He conveniently shifted the blame to Azlan Shah and Zambery, that illegal MB of his.

The longer the Perak crisis persists, the more support PR would win for this power grab doesnt have the approval of the Perakians and Malaysians at large. Now the High Court has declared Nizar as MB ALL THE TIME and even pending appeal and a stay of execution by BN he is still the MB for the Fed Court has yet to decide on the outcome of the High Coutr's decision. Now in Perak we have a MB who is not a MB and a not a MB who is claiming to be the MB.
I agreed with Kuli that this is not a legal problem but a political problem and the solution lies in going back to the people to find a political solution to the Perak crisis. Call for a snap election in Perak and let the Perakians find a solution acceptable to them.

What is the shame if he recognize his mistake? Or even a perfidious policy has been implemented? Its important is that one can reversely change the policy once it is found as mistaken.
To show one's working capability is to let people know that one can try to organize his mistake and put it into right track again as promptly as possible. There is nothing wrong if the grabbing power is lost again due to unexpected factors and elements. Provided it is doing the best for the country and its people.
Personal pride is given by people. Praises are coming from the heart of people. No body can just simple ask for it.
Why our Prime Minister can not think properly of it? If our PM is working hard for this country to bring goodness and betterment of economy back to society, he will be the best CEO of this country again.
Fame will be back. Mistake was done will be forgiven and forgotten.

Our government continued fear of real religion and cultural interaction among rakyat is causing all these problems in Malaysia. Divide and ruled, so much attacked by Mahathir about the former British government is in fact introduced by himself to all levels in government of his time including his own party. It has been used to ensure power remained in the hands of a few individuals in Malaysia. Change is invitable and many Malaysian who love this beautiful country will defitely act accordingly.

Barring a fresh election, both PR and BN should work together to prove to Perakians that the people's welfare is a higher priority than partisanship.
The rakyat should and is the final employer assessing which candidate to employ.
But if two rival candidates refuse to work together, the employer(rakyat) should give them a choice: either you work together or you both don't get the job. In such a stalemate, Perakians can bear the loss of being ungoverned and wait for the next GE to decide. Perhaps by then, both parties will come to their senses or there will be a third party that can offer better governance.
Of course, the ideal solution is for snap elections to be held but that option is currently a roadblock for BN.
And please, in the talks between PR with BN, do not reject outright any proposals for power-sharing if it is the second best solution to serve the people's interests.
Like Teng Hisao Peng said, the people don't care if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice. However, these two cats seem to be more concerned about who gets to be called the official MB than catching mice.
Also, an internet poll should be done to get feedback from the people of Perak on this second best solution. Either way, the people will have a decisive say about their state and how it is governed.

Najib screwed this one up royally, and now, he's trying to back out of it by saying that it is up to Zombie or the Sultan to decide what's next!
Najib should grow a set of "bebola"s and finish what he started! He would go down a little better in history if he owns up and be a man and end this whole fiasco.
He's already got enough baggage to carry, and he's just pilling them on more and more. Either he's a terrible leader, or he really needs to look at the way he governs and leads.

1) The case remains unresolved as at this moment. This shows the poor performance of the incompetent government.
2) Tun Ma and every body knows that BN will lose in the fresh Perak election. That is to say BN has forcefully taken the Perak state government without the consent or confidence of the Perakians. BN also impliedly admitted that Pakatan is the legitamate government.
3) If the BN remains stubborn and refused to let the Perakians to choose their own government, the educated new generations now will find that BN is undemocratic, incompetent, stubborn, arrogant etc.. There is a very clear signal that BN will lose terribly in the next general election.
4) If the BN proceeds with the fresh Perak election, whether win or not, at least gain back the respect and confidence of all the Malaysians.
5) New law must be imposed to allow fresh election whenever there is katak leaping to another party. Any asedemblyman who becomes katak whether for his/her personal benefits or not, must have his/her post revoked. Let the people to choose another one to represent them again , so that they won't feel being cheated by the kataks. The assemblymen must look into the benefits of all citizens instead of their own pocket and other personal benefits.

All Perak State Assemblymen sign a letter of resignation and submit it to the EC who will then declare a By-election for the whole state of Perak. Of course both parties must be present so that no fowl play is involved.
We, people in Perak is getting fed-up and I can only say BN is going to lose control of not only the state but the whole country by the next election if PM cannot make a mature and positive decision for the people of Perak.

If our PM thinks that it is too costly to have a fresh state election, maybe he can consider to have election just for the 3 DUN seats for the 3 betrayals' areas. You still can't escape from the election.

The era has changed. In the past, you have fooled some people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but now, you can not fool all the people all the time.
Just some years back, the rakyat did not have access to stipulate the way I am doing now, but now we have the avenue and opportunity to express how we feel. We feel less cloaked up. However, not quite there yet bacause you still have your dubious unlawful 'fear factor' approaches to curb the true freedom to express (without slander of course).
Your Abang ISA dah tua, tak upaya lagi, tapi you masih tak bagi ia 'mati' lagi. You should stop 'feeding him'. If not, then UMNO akan kaput. To some, that will be their dream that comes true. Me inclusive. Enough is enough.
Ball at your feet. We await.

that will humiliate him so badly.
He is hopeful 3 years can undo the damage...
At least he can try lah.
But fresh polls today...he will be sent to early funeral.
The problem is...
3 years later, Umno will still lose big time.
