KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) supreme council announced today that the party will not contest the Penanti state assembly seat in Penang, with Datuk Seri Najib Razak insisting it was a political ploy by Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
The decision today came despite some pressure from former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his backers not to give PR and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a free ride.
The Penanti by-election was called following the resignation of incumbent assemblyman Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin, who had also quit as Penang deputy chief minister amid graft allegations he was later cleared of.
The nomination day is on May 23 while polling is on May 31.
Justifying BN’s decision to stay out, Najib said the by-election was not caused by “provisions within the constitution.”
“It is only a way for PKR to solve its internal problems,” he said.
“BN prioritises service to the people and efforts to boost the economy. We will not dance to other people’s tune,” the prime minister insisted.
Many see the Penanti polls as a sure win for PR and BN’s reluctance to contest will fuel the perception that it wanted to avoid yet another electoral defeat in Peninsular Malaysia where it has lost all four by-elections since the 12th general elections in March 2008.
But Najib insisted that there was no reason for BN supporters to be disheartened as this was not the first time BN had not contested an election and that “there has been no such games being played like this until now.”
In an immediate reaction, PKR vice-president Azmin Ali accused BN of looking for excuses not to contest any elections at this point as it was afraid to face the people.
“They are trying to find a way out with any flimsy excuse. In actual fact, the people have lost confidence in BN and that is why BN does not have the courage to contest in Penanti nor in Perak,” he told The Malaysian Insider, referring to Umno’s reluctance to agree that a fresh election is the best way to solve the political impasse in Perak.
DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang simply said that he was “not surprised” when contacted by The Malaysian Insider.
He added that he would also be expecting BN to field a “phantom candidate” to run as an independent in Penanti.

But I agree with Uncle Lim,
a phantom candidate will run as an independent.
Phantom or not,
PR will still win big as a point to show that the people have forsaken BN.
And it is for real.

We are not surprise in your decision NOT WANTING to contest the Penanti seat by giving all types of excuses. You also made history for the first time in UMNO giving the opposition a 'walk-over'. No contest! Lost of total confidence in facing the rakyat. Why not - the signs are all over Malaysia showing that the people have lost their trust and confidence in the BN Govt. esp. with the Perak fiasco. I think it won't be long there will be another by-election coming up - can feel it in my bones. No contest again? Good and Bye-Bye to BN.

If there is no independent candidate, then the residents of Penanti have not been offered a choice. The Pakatan candidate then becomes the default winner. For democracy to work well, there must a choice. Even if UMNO fields a donkey, thats alright, I mean thats close enough to that standard, don't you think?
What about the BN supporters and the postal voters? These people are important to BN-UMNO. This their chance to try and win Penanti so that their BN-UMNO candidate can serve them and them ONLY - to hell with the rest of Penanti.
BN-UMNO is not being fair to the people of Penanti. They will miss out the carnival atmosphere and listening to the Malaysian's version of Ripley's Believe It or Not. Its really fun, these Pilihan Raya Kecil. I have seen whole families go to supper and then attend the ceramahs laughing their heads off at the jokes and antics of the politicians. Yes, Pilihan Raya Kecil is always a nice circus and the BN UMNO clowns are really fun. Its so goooood to watch the politicians sweat when they visit the smelly stuffy wet market and shake hands with the stallholders whose hands are calloused from years of honest hardwork. Once I even saw one UMNO hanger-on offer wet-wipes to his boss - an UMNO bigwig after he shook hands with a toothless Chinese lady selling taugeh.
Sad isn't it? That the people of Penanti have been deprived of a good show by BN UMNO.

Give the people of Penanti a choice. Just because you may loose is not excuse to give the people of Penanti a choice in their representative.

BN will also loose Penanti so they are scare as well. In all honesty, BN will most if not all the by elections that come now and in future. The cause is known to them. Is just that they choose to ignore it thinking it will go away.
The first thing they should do is to dissolve Perak Assembly and return to the people for decision. Yes, they will loose all the existing Pakatan seats including the cross over one as well as a few more from their own. But it will do alot of good to BN. At least they show to the people they respect democratic.
Second, reform judiciary, police and all government services. They will bring back trust and confident of the people.
Third, spend less time politicking and more time solving country economy problem.

BN has wisely avoided a humiliating defeat at a PKR victory. BN/UMNO can not safety ignore the fact it has become rather unpopular with the people.
However a good general does not accept defeat so readily. As already noted there will most likely be independent “phantom candidate (s)” who will run and if elected return to UMNO /BN to a hero's welcome.

Bravo Mr Fairus. BN is the culprit that caused all this. Surprisingly it is accusing the opposition for causing all this.
How can common people like us with some senses still believe in BN/UMNO. They never change until now. Good twister. Working for the people?

Now that BN, like a Penanti Fried Chicken, had declared not to fight at Penanti, does this mean, that you or your representatives :
1. Are not 'fighting' in Penanti but will keep making references to Penanti at all your upcoming public political statements and speeches,
2. Will not appear before, during, and after the campaign period and election date.
We, the Rakyat, await for your leadership to make this upfront announcement now, otherwise you will always be called "Penanti Fried Chicken", now and for ever.
Start getting used to this :
Peck, peck, peck, peck peck, peck, peck, peck peck, peck, peck, peck

Najib, and all other, please be reminded .......
In 1988, Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad, the Johor Baru MP from UMNO, resigned from his seat and stood in a by-election as an independent, and won. This obviosly brought shame to BN. So in 1990, BN with a 2/3 majority amended the Federal Constitution to incorporate Article 48(6).
With the amendment, BN would protect them for any further future shame. With this amendment, the elected representative is banned from standing in elections for five years upon his/her resignation from a state assembly or Parliament.
Chicken punya BN.
written by PM, May 19, 2009
If they stand, they are going to lose big time, and will only confirm what the rakyat already knows - they will be history comes the next GE.
If they do not stand, they will be seen by the rakyat as "chicken" or "kia-su" and there will be internal strife within the party as well. As we all know, a "chicken" party, and one with internal conflicts, will certainly not win the next GE.

He thinks that Najib will fall into his trap.?
Think again loser!....we pray n hope P.R will lose the support from the grassroots.
P.R's wakil rakyat will always come with sex issue, bogel issue, rasuah issue.....but BN will still contributes for people and have no time to involve in P.R probs.
Gd luck BN and Najib,...this is a good movement.
----> One more thing, Anwar thinks this by election can cut off the attentions on 'liwat' issue which will be heard soon...sorry Anwar.
Everyone knows you very-very well.

“It is only a way for PKR to solve its internal problems,” he said.
“BN prioritises service to the people and efforts to boost the economy. We will not dance to other people’s tune,” the prime minister insisted."
Yes ka Najib? BN never do this kind of thing? BN is so good, they try to safe every cent of the rakyat's money. Wow. What a load of BS. BN did the same thing to solve internal issue and created 2 by-elections in Selangor, that is double waste and all to solve internal problem and the by-election was not cos of constitutional issue. so what crap you talking. 1Malaysia...which finger ah?
see below - comments from YB LKS nlog
"But this is not borne out by Barisan Nasional’s own record. Just to give one example. In May 1997, BN created two simultaneous by-elections, one parliamentary and one state assembly in Selangor, so that Datuk Abu Hassan Omar could relinquish his post as Minister for Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to become Selangor Mentri Besar after Tan Sri Muhamad Muhamad Taib was forced to step down after his RM3 million financial caper in Brisbane, Australia."

If MACC had not been so speedy, this by-election would have been unnecessary.
Now, UMNO and Najib will have to wear th e'CHICKEN' tag!
