Kayveas challenges Murugiah to form new party

KUANTAN, May 25 - Datuk M. Kayveas, who was apparently 'ousted'  as PPP president in a party emergency assembly yesterday, today told protege-turned-nemesis Senator T. Murugiah to form a new party and “not disturb” the tiny party.

"I challenge him ... if he's so good, why not form another party and stop disturbing PPP," Kavyeas told reporters at the Pahang PPP annual general meeting here.

"Before this he (Murugiah) came to see the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and asked the ROS to deregister the party, now all of a sudden he was appointed the president. Is this lawful?" state news agency Bernama quoted him as saying.

Yesterday, some 1,760 delegates from 778 PPP branches "elected" Murugiah as the new PPP "president" in an extraordinary general meeting in Putrajaya, plunging the party deeper into crisis.

Kayveas downplayed the situation, saying he was still the rightful PPP president and that the crisis was only "a storm in a tea cup" which can be resolved.

"The meeting is invalid ... but I'd rather not comment anymore. He has been sacked from the party," he said, adding that the deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department still had until Saturday to appeal against his sacking.

On the meeting in Putrajaya, Kayveas said it was just an ordinary gathering before Murugiah turned it into an extraordinary general meeting.

"Only less than 10 per cent of those present were PPP members. I don't know where the rest came from.

"You need a proper election to vote for the president of the party, not just create a crowd and call it an extraordinary general meeting," Kayveas said.

He added that the party was identifying those present at the gathering and would serve them show-cause letters.

Kayveas said PPP's 56th Annual General Meeting would go on as scheduled on June 7.
