KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — One way he would improve racial ties in Malaysia if he were prime minister, said opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, would be to stop awarding scholarships to the children of government ministers.
Describing his experience when his eldest daughter Nurul Izzah — now Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur — went to university, Anwar said he was told he needn’t pay her fees as she was “automatically” given a scholarship.
But Anwar, who was then deputy prime minister and finance minister, persisted and the university eventually accepted his payment.
“This has to be stopped,” he said of the practice, which has angered families of poor Chinese and Indian students who qualified for assistance but did not receive it.
Speaking at a lunch yesterday organised by the Foreign Correspondents Association of Singapore, Anwar touched on a variety of topics, including racial harmony, Malaysia’s New Economic Policy (NEP) and his long-time political foe, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Lauding the efforts of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Anwar said the secretary-general of the DAP sets a good example of how to work with different races.
“Here is a Chinese leader who talks about the Malay problem, the Indian problem,” he said. “If we do this, we will win every by-election and general election.”
Anwar was also sceptical about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pledge that the controversial NEP would be reviewed. The policy gives privileges in government contracts, jobs, business, property purchases and education to Malays, and has resulted in a lack of opportunities for the minority races.
“He announced it here in Singapore, that he wants to dismantle the NEP, (but) nothing has happened since. You dismantle it in place of what?” asked Anwar. “Do you still continue the old ways of disbursing funds to selected companies and to your cronies?”
The opposition, on the other hand, outlined a plan several years ago to replace the NEP, said Anwar, one that would make Malaysia compete aggressively with economies like South Korea and Taiwan.
On Mahathir, Anwar said the former prime minister performed “remarkably well” in terms of reforming the country. He pointed out that the elder statesman had risen to prominence, though he did not come from an influential political family.
Anwar was heir apparent to Dr Mahathir until he was sacked in 1998 after being hit with sodomy and corruption charges. He served six years in jail for corruption but was later cleared of sodomy. The pair has been trading barbs over the years through the media.
Replying to a question on what he would say about Mahathir if he were writing his biography, Anwar said: “He had a very strong passion and desire to undertake necessary changes to make Malaysia great. I was persuaded to join (Umno) because of that.”
However, with time, Dr Mahathir became “too confident” and thought of Malaysia as his “own property”.
“I believe Malaysia has to move on beyond not only Mahathir,” Anwar said, “but also beyond old, obsolete policies and parties such as Umno and BN.” — Today

This saying is quoted by politicians everywhere all the time.
But Umno never learn. Why?
The government's scholarships for top achievers in Form Five examiniations.
And every year, the same old issues never addressed to satisfy the people's concerns.
In the first place, PSD scholarships should be given to students who do well and they come from poor family - but scholarships are given to Malays and discriminate against other minority races.
All ministers' children benefit from these scholarships - though they can afford to pay for their children education. If not all, most of them send their children overseas for studies.
Scholarships given to Malays - that is okay - if they are from poor family background. But if you look around, many are from rich family - datuks' children - holding high positions, VIPs.
Scholarships not given to Indians and Chinese, especially to natives - not many scholarships -
because of race and religion. What is 1Malaysia? Only a slogan...
NEP is used extensively and completely by UMNO - other component parties know nothing and not in any control or say. Even if issue is discussed in the BN, no point because UMNo dominate completely.
Why the voters will vote BN out of government in the next general election?
Because of abuses and excessiveness of UMNO leadership in the last 52 years.
They are drunk with power. The people need to rehabilitate them, to clean out their system if they have any chance of making a come back.

and a big pool of young populations
1. We have lots of furtile land which we can turn to cattle farming which can save alot of our money going out for imports, we have lots of mining pools which we can turn into fish farming, and other lands which we can turn to vegetable farmings, We have to be 100% self sufficient and later part to export to our Asean countries which have 550 million populations we will save alot on our foreign exchange or money going out of the country to buy the basic items
2. We need less Mega projects that are big capital investments only those necessary, but alot more human investment for our service industry like our tourism industry
3. We need less subsidy only for those that are really poor and really deserved it, no free lunch so that we make every industry to be the most efficient to compete globally.Yes we need high paying salary so that in 2020 when we become an advanced country our salary will be at par with those in the advanced country. We need to have a Mindset Change from Top to Bottom, a change in the way we think & go our works

I support Anwar because of his long held vision of a corrupt-free society. I view corruption as the worst social enemy of all communities. That's why China has a death sentence for this social evil.
So far, Anwar has been very restrained in criticizing Mahathir, while Mahathir still has a big mouth in defaming Anwar from time to time, not knowing that he was the one who put Anwar in jail. In anyone has to be angry, it should be Anwar.

It was Anwar who brought up the problems of corruption, nepotism, cronyism during UMNO conference and it was Dr M who chilled everybody and made being a Crony an honorable label, so everybody wants to be a crony.. why not, just easy business, easy opportunities and easy money for UMNO..
Only want for a changed society s for a change of government, a revolution of sort, and ANWAR with PKR is the way forward... give ANWAR that change.. One Term or Two Term and we will all see Malaysia a place to be proud of.. imagine Malaysia just like Korea, taiwan, Singapore, China !! Instead of remainng the most backward of the developing SEA Nations.. whats of the Look East Policy??? Waht of the 2020??? and worst..Slogans here and there... time for a "Social Revolution"

I agree with your POV. Meritocracy is something that should rise above race and religion. It is something that is practised with a sense of fairness no matter what your skin colour, however, Anwar has to spin something, just like BN has to or even any other political party in the world.
That's just politics.
And having said that, I feel that despite Anwar riding on the race/religion wave in most of his speeches and media responses, I think I'd rather hear it coming out of Anwar's mouth with a sense of sincerity and passion rather than an old BN goat's mouth like Najib, Samy Vellu or Muhyiddin.
For Anwar, this is the way he will get the voters and really if you look at the maturity level of Malaysia as an independent nation, that really IS the only way to make his points valid amongst the community.
And we as the voters, need to be confident enough to trust that this is Stage A of the true Malaysian change.
From there, as people of Malaysia, we also need to be confident enough to approach our elected leaders and to work with them to then focus on what the key issues are and how they can be addressed.
See? Problem is, it ALWAYS takes two hands to clap. M'sians MUST get out of that mentality that once they cast their vote, let the politicians do their job while we go and earn a living and feed mouths.
THIS is why Malaysia is in the state it is in today. We, the people of Malaysia gave our power as a nation to these BN rascals. had we been more interactive in the first place, always addressing, always analysing and always engaging our leaders, this wouldn't have happened.
We cannot let politicians rule our land absolutely, no matter what party they are for they are voted in as a public service TO THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE.
They are not voted in to have cupcakes and tea in their grand mansions. They are there to work FOR US. We don't work for them. We tell THEM what to do FOR US otherwise no votes. Simple as that.
That is the difference and when we see that as a nation, then can we truly be powerful.

Bullshxt, full load of nonsense!
Which Malay,Indian etc Singaporean is marginalised by their PAP govt and turn to Bolehland govt for assistances?
The whole world including the Middle Eastern Islamic States knows very well that Singapore pratices Meritocracy system based on individual's merits. They are confident to put their petrol dollar there in Singapore. They even cooperate with Singapore's Govt Linked Companies to set up joint venture company on various sectors, especially on water management.
Guess what, the minister in charge of water in Singapore is a Malay Muslim and he is Dr Yaacob Ibrahim. Dr Yaacob is given a task by the govt to look after Muslims' affairs.
Yes in Singapore,Malays are still lagging behind the chinese in terms of standard of living.Nevertheless, they have improved tremendously over the last three decades. Just go to hypermarkets in JB over the weekend and take a closer look on their purchasing power and the cars they drive. You will then have the answer.
Sad to see some fellow Malaysian fooled by Be End.

It appears some UMNO supporters here are even scared of DSAI's shadow.
There was an idiotic comment about DSAI being racist against non-Malays. From reading his views I can't find any such inference.
In principal, Ministers' children should not be entitled to receive scholarships even if they score 20As in the ridiculous SPM exam these days.
Scoring 20As when you come from a privileged background doesn't mean you a smarter than a student who studies without electricity or water supply at home, who travels by boat to school over a journey of 2 hours in the interiors of Sarawak and who scores 6As.
The number of As should not be the sole criteria for scholarships and definitely not when we compare apples to oranges.

YB Kit, please take note of my comment.
I’m from Sitiawan, Perak. I found out that a MCA branch chairman who is also a teacher in SMK Nan Hwa has a son who got JPA scholarship after appealing through the Putrajaya MOE, though his result is not very good. I believe some money have been involve in this so-called “successful” JPA scholar. I’m also sadden when some students who got better result than him was rejected of the scholarship. I hope YB can do something about this. Thanks.
Continue to fight for Malaysians.
