FINAL UPDATE 12.20PM
By Shannon TeohIPOH, May 26—In yet another twist to the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) hunger strike, riot police arrested over a dozen people including eight elected representatives who tried to lead a march from the DAP headquarters to the Ipoh High Court.
The arrests took place after the launch of the planned three-day hunger strike by ousted mentri besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin at the DAP headquarters here.
Those arrested include dumped assembly speaker V. Sivakumar, Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, Kedah DAP chief Thomas Su and Perak PKR deputy chief Chang Lih Kwang.
Kulasegaran was taken with into the truck with the others despite insisting he was simply “walking” not “marching”.
Meanwhile, the tent that was erected for the event was taken down by Ipoh City Hall workers despite police earlier agreeing not to.
Earlier, the light strike force officers moved in at 7am, arresting two local and three Burmese workers from an event management company who were putting up the tent and a giant balloon.
The balloon was also confiscated.
The officers then occupied the tent to block PR from continuing with their fast, which is part of a move to press for fresh elections in the silver state.
At 9.30am, the riot police were still under the tent just outside the DAP Ipoh headquarters and having breakfast.
A total of 40 policemen, two jeeps, four police cars, two vans and seven trucks were seen in the area.
Police later tried to remove the tent point but Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham negotiated with them. The police said the tent was an illegal structure but DAP leaders present pleaded with them “not to take sides”.
“If you want to take down illegal structures, there are many in my constituency,” said Su, the Pasir Pinji assemblyman.
In the end, the police stood down and left the tent alone. However, when PR leaders tried to take a group photo, police asked the crowd to disperse, insisting that any gathering outside private premises is illegal.
The crowd has moved on to the Ipoh High Court, where a suit by 817 village committee members appointed by PR is to be filed for wrongful dismissal by the BN government.

Police is super slow in stopping Mat Rembits and snatch thieves.
If the police will put their minds into something,
they can achieve.
The problem is they are putting their minds on wrong things.
Instead of catching thieves, they catch people who light candles.
Instead of catching Mat Rembits, they catch drivers and ask money for breakfast.

Instead of arresting those who are a non-threat to the people, try to arrest those rapist, child molesters, robbers, snatch thiefs, etc.
Stop acting like king of thugs and start doing your job as PDRM, not PRDM.
I guess we have to send all these police personnels back to training camp to learn the basics! Your role is to uphold the law, not acting like a judge or keep taking orders from "authority".

Come on, this is rather disappointing, and a waste of money but I'm not praising the police at all for their "efficiency". Once again, PR is just giving room for BN to make a mockery of PR's attempt to win back the State of Perak.
To Nizar and Sivakumar, please go ahead with the appeal; go to the highest level instead of doing this hunger strike. Show BN that you're more mature than they are. If you keep doing silly events like this, eventually, like what Mr. Z had said, the people will be bored of it.
Don't let your desire to win and to see democracy being done cloud your thinking.

1. Former Home Minister gave statement that a police pondok/station is moving out of a certain area because that area is becoming too dangerous (even for the armed police).
2. Journalist detained under ISA for her own security.
3. MP detained for presumably calling for the azan over loudspeakers of a mosque to be stopped even though the particular mosque's official denied such a thing ever occured.
4. Top cop said PDRM has no power to interfere inside Parliament's compound when a group of rowdy fellas (presumably from the ruling party) accosted and threatened a wheelchair-bound MP.
5. Group of rough thugliked men (presumably police as "new" Speaker said he called in the police to take action) barged into the august Perak DUN and dragged out the Speaker from his seat.
6.People selling and wearing the mask of a "cannot be named" woman were chased and detained by the police.
7. Activist calling on general public to wear black to signify 1BlackMalaysia was detained by the police.
8. Five young lawyers from the Legal Aid Centre of the Bar Council who went to the Brickfields Police station to see their detained clients were themselves detained for "being members of an illegal assembly".
9. DAP's headquarters raided by the police and things were confiscated.
And now this?!!!!
Don't the 40 cops have better crime-prevention work to do?
With these events taking place we are moving very fast towards a police state. Pakatan Rakyat and all NGOs please do something about this! The Rakyat will be behind you always.

What is that to do with the police when the illegal structure is concerned supposedly is the work of the Council to take action, if any. Simply, as we have seen, the light strike police, the riot police will jump into actions irregardless of whether that was their duties or ambit of authority! Crime preventions are cheap and the safeties of the rakyat are less important which should give way to their ignorant slack in performing the necessary?!
Please lah....leave the rakyat alone and respect our rights and the Constitutions! Today you are the stooges and unprofessional bouncers of the despots will end up nowhere tomorrow when people's powers prevail next day when all the real outlaws are wiped out! Give us the rakyat a chance to respect you at least the least, when you are doing the right thing!

It started with the ultra conservative interpretation of the constitutional provisions dealing with fundamental liberties by the Judiciary in the 1960s and the 1970s which had qualified and diluted these rights considerably. Now the Malaysian police appears to have taken things into its own hands and clearing up what little space was left to exercise those rights.
Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are fundamental rights, but the police think that they have an absolute right to decide if these rights can be exercised by the public. Every public gathering must have a police permit, if not it will be deemed unlawful. They must approve the list of speakers, restrict the number of speakers and even the contents of their speeches. They may even determine what clothes and what colours that we may wear. They are not concerned with the the right of an arrested person to legal representation as stipulated in the Federal Constitution. Why, they may even arrest and place in their custody, lawyers who turn up at the police station to see their clients. It is within their power to block and prevent the sitting of a State Legislative Assembly. And of course they may barge into the State Legislative Assembly at any time and drag the lawful Speaker from his seat so that somebody they approve of may occupy that seat. Not forgetting their right to enter any private premises without a search warrant, to conduct a raid therein and to seize anything that may be found there.
So the latest police action in Ipoh is hardly surprising. It is perfectly consistent with the all its previous actions showing utter contempt for human rights. It is hard to believe that the police are in this alone. There must surely be some unseen hands at work here. Probably they are doing as being told. Whatever the case, this is bad and dangerous for the country. If human rights can be exercised or practised only as determined and to the extent as allowed by the police then were already living in a police state.
To ensure that the police do not get their way with their bullying tactics, it is imperative all such unlawful forays into the domain of fundamental liberties are resisted even at the risk of sanctions and if need be to mount a legal challenge to reestablish and to strengthen our democratic rights. But that is placing a great deal of hope on our Judiciary. Will they rise to the occasion?

written by Kiwi in Malaysia, May 26, 2009
What message does that send? To me, it means that the cops are not following the letter of the law, that they are not consistent, that they don't have a good enough reason to go ahead with these acts.
It makes them look more and more unprofessional each and every time.
I remember when they tried to close down the restaurants outside the State Secretariat on May 7th. First they tried to close down the premises, then they tried to arrest or move the patrons, then they finally gave up and bought drinks there????
Such immature, unprofessional policing only makes them look like the last people who should be the guardians of the law. Clearly, they don't know the law, and can't apply it intelligently. They should be sued until they can be taken seriously.
I'd just love to see how they would fare working in NZ. Really, I would.

I disagree.
A) It is not a DAP/Chinese/Racial "thing" to protest or conduct public displays. These tools are a healthy and much needed aspect of a democracy.
B)There is no "Chinese" power behind Perak, they're busy with the North Koreans at the moment(sarcasm attempt). The Malaysia people's power a.k.a. Makkal Sakthi are behind Perak.
