KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Former communist leader Chin Peng laid down arms 20 years ago, and on April 30, he lost his final bid in the Federal Court to return to Malaysia, but in recent weeks Umno leaders and media controlled by the party have turned him once again into the country’s “Public Enemy No. 1”.
Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, a former Umno Cabinet minister, expressed concern today over the racial overtones of the campaign to prevent Chin Peng from coming home.
“According to Rais Yatim and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi there is a new enemy — the group that wants to revive communism. The ministers may have come to this conclusion because there are a few Chinese who want Chin Peng to be allowed home,” the former de facto law minister wrote on his blog today.
Rais, the information minister, and Ahmad Zahid, the defence minister, both claimed this week there were moves to revive communism.
Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian have also been running anti-Chin Peng stories on a daily basis in what appears to be a campaign to whip up a sense of nationalism among readers.
Former security forces veterans are also being interviewed to rail against the “evils of communism”.
Rais also said this week that RTM would start airing documentaries on the “cruelty” of the communists.
Writing in his weekly column in Berita Harian, Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman, a former MP and a media advisor in the Najib administration, claimed that the principles of freedom of speech and democracy were fronts to revive communism.
He added that the tendency of the opposition to speak of a class struggle by using specific terms such as "ruling elite", "Umno elite", "Umnoputras" and "marginalised groups" reflected the same pattern.
The anti-communist campaign so far suggests an attempt to paint a picture of the Chinese community as sympathisers.
It also appears to include the portrayal of Malay Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders such as ousted Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin as a communist sympathiser because of his close ties with the Chinese-dominated DAP.
Zaid, who was sacked from Umno and who is expected to join a PR party, defended those who have pleaded for Chin Peng to return to Malaysia.
“Many are sympathetic to Chin Peng’s aspiration to return home and die. This does not mean they want to revive communism.”
He pointed out also that even the Chinese in China were now practising free market capitalism as are the Chinese community in Malaysia.
“So what is the motive of Umno in making a big issue of communism? Don’t cause friction among the people by creating a new enemy.
“I wonder if Chin Peng were a Malay, would our stand and emotions be the same?”
Zaid noted that Utusan Malaysia was campaigning aggressively against Chin Peng, and while he agreed that the former communist leader was “cruel,” he pointed out the “cruel” communists included former fighters such as Rashid Maidin and Shamsiah Fakeh who were allowed to return home to Malaysia.

can you imagine the mentality of our information minister and defence minister (and of course not forget PM) - just because some chinese agree that ching peng should be allowed to return, these stupid ministers said they are reviving communism. so very very stupid!
btw, let's say if it were kwong wah or sinchew that campaign aggressively against rashid maidin and shamsiah fakeh, they would be slammed as being racist or the home minister will give them warning, but since it is umno's utusan malaysia that did it, nothing will happen to utusan.

Reviving communism in Malaysia ? Most countries are giving it up - slowly. Soviet broke up. CHINA IS now the largest capitalist/communist country. The Maoist in Nepal gave it up. Cuba will soon turn capitalist when their archaic leaders die off. Vietnam is slowly but surely going capitalist. So what is this talk of Malaysia going communist ? Rubbish !
You can ALWAYS depend on UMNO to be RACIALIST ! Even a year after March 2008, UMNO has not change. It still depend on extreme racial support - not RAKYAT support .

We'll fall in love once again
So let's tell the world of our new love divine
Forever and ever you'll be mine ...
Forever and ever, my heart will be true
Sweetheart forever, I'll wait for you
We both made a promise that we'll never part
Let's seal it with a kiss forever, my sweetheart.
According to the refrain of the song, while mindfully and painfully aware of the past, let us just move forward with forgiveness. The past is the past and nothing we can do will ever change this.
We must command the wisdom to show and shower human kindness to the vanguished.
If the Barisan Nasional expects the people to forgive the ruling coalition of its shortcomings, the Barisan Nasional must show and shower kindness when it is in a position to do so. In doing so, it will tell us that its "heart is true."
After all, what can a man in his late 80s do when he returns to Malaysia. As a wit once said, Chin Peng was never that smart. Had he been smart, the MPAJA will not come down from the mountains after the war to do what they did.
The MCP never had a game plan to take over Malaya. Fullstop.
Their struggle, if at all, was for Independence. They never had a game plan for post-Independent Malaya.

Nobody in his right mind in this age and generation wants to be a communist even though they are giving their views over this overblown issue.
Don't create ghosts when there is no ghost except like the Chinese says, "You see ghosts everywhere because there is one in your heart."
I think the Information Ministry is cursed with a jinx, why over the years there is no one capable and sensible minister, ever. After one ghost left, another takes over, (Sigh !)
Nothing sensible comes from the ministry except threats.....who wants to be a Communist nowadays? STOP BULLSHITTING ABOUT REVIVAL OF COMMUNISM !
Just some are sympathetic and arguing on humanitarian ground to allow the old man to return don't make them communists.
Our PM is visiting China soon, does it make him "sympathetic" to the Communism ideology?
No wonder some wise people said, "there is no cure for stupidity."
Thank Heavens, most Malaysians have matured faster compared to some of our medieval ghost-buster leaders from the BN. Clear the cobwebs in your mindset and you will see better. If not retire earlier.
I still think this ministry is a waste of taxpayers' money.

For Malaysian Chinese, communism has no place in their capitalistic lifestyle now, so any attempt to paint racial content into Chin Peng would not hold water. BTW, Cuba & Russia are one chinese, so communism is definitely non racial.
The government should allow Chin Peng to return to Malaysia just to show the world that Malaysians are matured politically and is too strong in capitalism, and not afraid with one dreaming old man.

Why the double standard? I don't give a damn about Chin Peng. But I just can't stand the obvious hypocrisy of the ultra UMNO Malays. If Rais, Zahid, Abdul Rahman Sulaiman, and other UMNO goons so hate the communists, why don't you publicly declare your stand and stop any bilateral relationship with China...RIGHT NOW! This is the second time I dare you all. Yes, ban all business ventures of the Malay in China, too, if you will. Let the grand old man come home to rest in peace and lie down in dignity as a human like all of us.
To the leaders of this nation, who teaches hatred and cruelty to a fellow human being who has repented, you are the worst kind and a stumbling block to reconcilation and unity of the people of a free Malaysia.
Shame on you who think you are a hero, but walk in unrighteousness and cruelty. A clear good example of hypocrisy would be our former member of UMNO, who resigned and became enemy number one of UMNO, but was allowed to return back, for the sake of its survival. A hypocrite is one who talk but doing the opposite. One who wish for a united and 1 Malaysia, but doing and putting up all the barriers that prevent it from happening.
Its so clear to the world ,what the Myanmar military government is doing to Aung San Suu Kyi and its people. Suppressing and opressing the people of Myanmar and yet they are unashame of their evil and wicked ways. Or is it that they are so blind and cant see their evil ways? As someone have mentioned, the evil and wicked will become mad before their dismissal. The similarity and happenings in Malaysia can be clearly seen.

I don't know what is the agenda of Rais Yatim and Zaid Hamidi in demonising Chin Peng but I suspect there are racial overtones to this as Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has said and it is a dangerous game they are playing for political mileage. Do these two senior Cabinet Ministers really and honestly from the bottom of their hearts believe that an old Commie (and more likely a reformed one by now who no longer believes in the cause) like Chin Peng is a security threat to this nation.
Give us a break, don't take us for fools please. For goodness sake, I can honestly say that there is not one single Chinese person in Malaysia who would advocate or even tacitly support a revival of Communism in this country. We have all got used to the good life that capitalism and democracy (although democratic principles seem to be sorely lacking in Malaysia these days) has brought us. By the way I am an average middle class and middle aged Chinese male, so I am sufficiently qualified to give a view on this.
We should also remember that there were Malays too in the Communist ranks and as Datuk Zaid has pointed out Rashid Maidin and Shamsiah Fakeh were allowed to return to Malaysia. Why, one might ask were they allowed to return and not Chin Peng. Can the Govt please enlighten us. Would he have been treated differently had Chin Peng been a Malay. Hmmm, I wonder.
I am certainly NOT a Commie sympathiser (in case anyone should even contemplate a witch hunt) but I just wanted to write a comment because of the absurdity of this whole issue. The Federal Court has ruled against Chin Peng's return, so let's just leave it at that and let the man live and die in peace in Thailand. This issue should now been a dead issue and not be whipped up by irresponsible quarters into a racial one.
As for Rais Yatim and Ahmad Zaid Hamidi, please lah go and comment on something more topical and important like the PKFZ scandal. Devote your energies to weeding out the multi-billion corruption in your Government ranks and the Malaysian public will wholeheartedly support you on this. We will all sleep soundly knowing that our Ministers are looking after our national wealth rather than looking for Commies under their beds.

Rais, Zahid, Utusan, Berita Harian and all others who make claims that there are parties now and here in Malaysia TRYING TO REVIVE communism HAVE TO SUBSTANTIATE their claims with SOLID PROOFS and EVIDENCE.
If they CANNOT do so, they have to make A PUBLIC APOLOGY to ALL MALAYSIANS in ALL MAJOR newspapers for making BASELESS and UNSUBSTANTIATED CLAIMS which are causing public unease and a sense of insecurity among the people.
ALL Malaysians must DEMAND that they STOP making senseless and baseless claims which are of use to us Malaysians.
The PM is visiting China soon. Is he going to tell THE CHINESE in Beijing that COMMUNISM is not needed in Malaysia and inform them that there are parties in Malaysia trying to revive the ideology locally?
If those Malaysians ministers and tabloids and other similarly-inclined interest groups are so concerned about the EVILS of communism, then they should tell PM Najib NOT to visit China, because he might be influenced by the communist ideology!!!
If there is NO TRUTH to all the craps they are harping on, then the PM must tell his ministers to STOP disseminating lies and creating unnecessary unease among Malaysians.
AND, LEAVE the old man Chin Peng ALONE!!!
Do the Malaysian SUPER MINISTERS seriously think that that old man could revive or cause to revive communism in Malaysia?? If he could, then China would be the FIRST to rush to Thailand to get the old man so that he could help them in their indoctrination exercises!

No amount of self-edited drama series or documentaries will help to delude the rakyat anymore since every intellectual person has knowledge that CPM leaders were not only Chinese and Malay fighters whom they concurred to the ideology of the Communist party were inclusive and aplenty in memberships too!
In any confrontation of the war, lost of lives and casualties are inevitable. Just like 513, many lives regardless of races were lost for no known reason except the political egos of a bunch of power crazy and insane cheap politicians, had caused the tragedy! Can we retrospect to history and dig out the corpse of the demonic perpetrators and blame their race or the sons for having such evilly leaders and/or fathers?
Why not Rais also put such history in documentary form and airs through RTM to let all rakyat informed of how the 513 was plotted and who were the evil minds and how many innocent peoples had been killed brutally by their criminal instigation and sedition!

Meantime, I shake my head in disbelief again at the consistent foolishness and illogic of UMNO's old and tired ministers. Why do they keep shooting themselves in the foot? They have about 3 - 4 years left to win non Malays - particularly the Chinese Malaysians - support by the time the general elections come round in 2013. Yet their racial overtones, especially anti Chinese ones, seems to be surfacing every now and then. Perhaps they can't change, being relics as they are from the narrow minded fuedal age.
Perhaps Najib ought to get rid of these two for non perforamnce or perhaps, misperformance of their roles : Rais Yatim for turning the Chinese even further away from UMNO, and Ahmad Zahidi for that bungling fiasco in Perak.

Even today, the Malaysians who lived in the Japanese era, who are still alive (not many left), remember the Japanese atrocities and do not have kind words to say about the Japanese. They frown on their children or grandchildren going to study in Japan and they themselves will not want to have a Japanese as a friend.
Similarly, Chin Peng symbolises the face of the Communist Party of Malaya, which, in case we forget, only gave up its armed struggle against the Malaysian armed forces and uniformed personnel (police, Senoi Praaq, Sarawak Rangers, Police Field Force) in 1989 - 20 years ago and 32 years after we obtained independence from the British. Until it was weakened considerably in the 1980s, the CPM continued to ambush and kill Malaysian troops and police (who are not Umno or Barisan Nasional members) and therefore, memories are still not that old as compared to the atrocities suffered under the Japanese until they surrendered in 1945 (64 years ago).
There are many more Malaysians living today who have suffered the atrocities committed by the CPM led by Chin Peng and who resent the fact that he should be allowed to come back to our country to die.
It is easy to say lets forgive and forget. But who are the people saying let's forgive? They are those who do not have a living reminder in their family or friends' families - someone who lost his father to the communist; someone whose father lost his legs in a booby trap while keeping our borders and jungles safe from the communist threat; someone whose whole family was wiped out by the CPM during the Emergency years from 1948 to 1960 or even after that.
And its a fallacy to believe it is the Malays who don't want Chin Peng to come back. People get that impression because of the idiotic and unthinking comments made by Rais Yatim and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. People get that impression because of the chauvinistic and narrow racial tones expressed in Utusan Malaysia.
But none of these people - Rais, Ahmad Zahid or Utusan Malaysia - have credibility amongst Malaysians overall - be they Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans or Ibans. So why bother about them? They are not the cleverest of people. Why turn the Chin Peng thing into a Malay versus Chinese issue?
The communists killed thousands of Malaysians and others, such as the British, in their more than 40 years of terror. Chin Peng may have started the CPM to fight for freedom but why did he spurn independence even after the British gave it to us in 1957? Why did they continue to take up arms and kill thousands of innocents?
Want to know how cruel the Communists led by Chin Peng were? Go to the rarely visited Police Museum in Lake Gardens. See the historically documented facts about whom they killed, how they killed. And you will find the names of all those cruelly killed and murdered by the CPM - Sikhs, Indians, Eurasians, British and the majority are actually Chinese and Malays.
Ask the family of the late Chief Police Officer of Perak Tan Sri Koo who was murdered by the CPM in 1975. Ask the family of the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Salleh, murdered in 1975. Ask the families of ordinary police constables gunned down brutally in Jalan Mountbatten in the 1970s. Ask the family of the soldiers gunned down cruelly and the communists laughing while they shot the injured in the head in the Weng and Gubir districts near the Baling, Kedah, side of the border with Thailand in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Then, pray tell, whether it is easier to let Chin Peng stay in Thailand or China, or to allow him to come back and re-open the wounds of our heroes and their children and grandchildren.
It is not about race, stupid. It is not about stupid Umno, or stupid DAP, or stupid Pakatan Rakyat. It is about putting salt on the wounds of those who gave their lives for this country, my country, your country - Malaysia.

He is the dark past... yg perlu dilupakan. kalo disebut tentu akan menimbulkan perasaan perkauman lagi.

In parallel Communism has no place in Malaysia & is not embraced by its populace, however, being magnanimous has nothing to do with being sympathetic to Communism.

Communism is dying a slow death and Chin Peng is a spent force and a dying man. What can he do to revive communism in Malaysia ? Can Rais and Zahid enlighten us on their rationals in denying an old man to die in his own home ? I hope both of you will not face similar situation as Chin Peng on your dying beds.

Zaid is the racist here for playing the race card. While accuses UMNO of using Malay sentiments, he is also guilty of using the race card to stir the emotions of the Chinese.
What he is trying to do is to racialise a terrorist and criminal issue.

Zaid, for your info my uncle who was ind the field force was killed in an ambush in Perak in the 70's and i could still remember the tears of my auntie and her childrens as if it was yesterday. It is so easy for the PRO CP or PKM to welcome him back with open arms but not to my family due to the misery coz by PKM and it Commander In Chief.
This is not a question whether CP is Chinese or Malay as higligthed by Zaid in his blog, but whether he is a MALAYSIAN and on a balance of convenience the benefit of not allowing him backed outweight the welcome home party.
