KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 – Dr Mahathir Mohamad today urged the government to amend its laws to provide immunity to those who blow the whistle on corruption.
The outspoken former Prime Minister who recently criticised the United Malay Nation Organization (UMNO) for vote-buying and money politics said such practices will lead to its downfall.
In a post on his blog this afternoon, he said the existing laws against corruption in Malaysia end up promoting corruption rather than preventing it.
“Because of the ineffectiveness of the law, corrupt people often get away with their corrupt practices,” wrote Mahathir.
Because the law states that those who offer and receive bribes are equally guilty, he wrote, this makes either side unwilling to report the incident and so corruption goes on unpunished.
The former Prime Minister proposed that those who report cases of corruption be given immunity even if they were involved, provided that the evidence is substantial and true.
Mahathir also said that political corruption was extremely difficult to detect because both parties may be willing participants and therefore the act is unlikely to be revealed.
He ended his post by saying that corruption cannot be stopped if a government itself is corrupt and it will spread until it becomes a way of life.

UMNO is made up of mostly the corrupt and rotten racists.
Having said it, Mahatir is trying to amend his creation but not sayng that he was the culprit who caused corruption to spread like plague.

Everybody knew that the normal attitude of heads should to be open to accept critics and complaints. They should explain and correct all the critics.
But sadly, not a practise in our present govt. Those who voice out will be silence by dirty tactic.
These are the present heads behaviours especially in all govt sector (include police and judicial);
1) Thinking about tactic, they are the best.
2) Asking these heads to thinking about work improvement, enhancement, incooperate technology or IT into work, they are lazy bump.
3) They interest grew if it cum with personal gain.

Ha! Ha! Ha! What a joke! The ex-PM admits that the laws of the country promotes corruption instead of preventing it! When and how did such laws come about? And did he only come to know about this today? Perhaps he may want to elaborate.

To be taken seriously one must mean what he or she says. But at least in the case of YAB Tun he is trying to do at the end what a wise man would have done at the beginning.

Get ready. If immunity is given to whistle-blowers,
Umno will have to close shops.

"The evil that man do lives after them, The good is oft interred with their bones"
Whatever Dr M says now, I dont think history will be kind to him. He should have thought about his legacy years ago when he was in power.

Dr Mahathir said, (Special General Assembly 1994 quote): "UMNO is not just another political party. UMNO is a ruling party. We have been in power since independence, without a break. UMNO leaders not only lead the party but also the government at the state and federal levels. And as leaders of government, we possess power. If we accept money politics in the party, if corruption becomes a culture in UMNO, if our leaders gain positions through giving bribes, we will end with a government filled with members and leaders who are corrupt criminals. Can we trust such leaders to govern wisely, sincerely, honestly and fairly?"
(Quote): "Can we convinced that our country will continue to progress? ONLY THOSE INSANE WILL BELIEVE THAT A GOVERNMENT OF CORRUPT CRIMINALS WILL BRING PROSPERITY TO THE COUNTRY AND PEOPLE." (Unquote)
Well, Dr Mahathir, you have said it all. The paradox of your speech is self-explanatory which need no further elaboration. You can enjoy your retirement and let the Malaysian voters do the rest based on your past advice at the next general elections. Thank you.
