Dr M: Give immunity to whistle-blowers

By Edward Cheah

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 – Dr Mahathir Mohamad today urged the government to amend its laws to provide immunity to those who blow the whistle on corruption.

The outspoken former Prime Minister who recently criticised the United Malay Nation Organization (UMNO) for vote-buying and money politics said such practices will lead to its downfall.

In a post on his blog this afternoon, he said the existing laws against corruption in Malaysia end up promoting corruption rather than preventing it.

“Because of the ineffectiveness of the law, corrupt people often get away with their corrupt practices,” wrote Mahathir.

Because the law states that those who offer and receive bribes are equally guilty, he wrote, this makes either side unwilling to report the incident and so corruption goes on unpunished.

The former Prime Minister proposed that those who report cases of corruption be given immunity even if they were involved, provided that the evidence is substantial and true.

Mahathir also said that political corruption was extremely difficult to detect because both parties may be willing participants and therefore the act is unlikely to be revealed.

He ended his post by saying that corruption cannot be stopped if a government itself is corrupt and it will spread until it becomes a way of life.
