SHAH ALAM, June 9 – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the opposition was necessary as a reflection of the government.
“It’s not healthy to have a one-party state. We need to have the opposition. Otherwise, we won’t have a ‘mirror’ to see whether we look good or not,” he said at a news conference, here, today.
He was asked to comment on the proposal made by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang at the party’s 55th general assembly last week on the setting up of a unity government between PAS and Umno.
Dr Mahathir said the unity government proposal was also not clear, whether it was to be between PAS and Umno or between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat.
“If unity is just among Malays, Chinese with Chinese, and Indians with Indians, we’ll be divided into three groups. I don’t know... but it’s not my problem, I’m already retired.
“In those days when we formed BN, we invited all parties to join, except DAP. PAS also joined BN but later split from the coalition as it used its power in government to strengthen the party and not BN,” he said.
Asked how a unity government could benefit the country, Dr Mahathir said it would only bring good if both sides were sincere about doing it in the interest of the nation.
“But it’s sometimes difficult for politicians to be sincere. I’m also a politician, you know,” he said, smiling. – Bernama

He should know, he was the longest serving prime minister in our country.
Two party system is health.
The people know that.
The latest move by Umno to talk to Pas.
No problem. As the Malays want them to share, to dialogue, to explore possiblities.
This is about the Malay agenda - why not?
So this is the scenario.
As Malays emphasise the importance of Malay unity.
Other races in Malaysia should do the same.
Chinese with Chinese.
Indians with Indians.
Dayaks with Dayaks.
Malay Muslims will emphasise ketuanan Melayu.
That means other bumiputras are left out.
Take the cue - non-Malay bumiputras must seek unity also.
The Dayaks must be united under your own banner.
And since you are the majority in East Malaysia, seek ketuanan Dayaks.
As Umno-Pas talk about unity government.
All others are excluded.
That means each man must take his own.
This is the policy and this policy is shaping up real fast.
Forget about 1Malaysia.
It is a gimmick lah.
It is actually 1Melayu.
And when you start talking about 1Malaysia as treating all Malaysians as equal citizens.
The Malays will get very nervous about losing their privileges.
They will talk about losing the country to aliens.
They will talk about themselves as pribumi - longer and older than bumiputra.
They will talk about the old civilisations found in Kedah and Kelantan - how long Malays have been here.
They will talk about Malays as one speak the language, a Muslim and who observes the traditions of Malays...Yet Malays are all different, the Malays in Kelantan - their language and traditions can be different from one who is from Malacca.
Dr Mahathir says Opposition is necessary.
But the lines of parties will change.
Political shiftings are taking place.
Let the Malays form their unity government.
And all the non-Malays form their unity party.
In Malaysia, it will be Malays vs non-Malays.
Non-Malays here include all the non-Malay bumiputras - the Dayaks, Kadazans, all the natives and Orang Asli.
If Malays in their emphasis ketuanan Melayu asserts they rule, then all non-Malays as citizens which is enshrined in the federal constitution must be united to form the Opposition.
If you think the idea above is extreme.
Then one should think the consequence of unity government by Umno and Pas.
The political shifting is natural.
As Charles Darwin believed on the survival of the fittest.
As Malays assert, non-Malays must seek to survive.
This is not a threat.
This is what Awang Selamat talks about.
Mari lah kita renungkan.
If you agree this could be a political reality if Umno and Pas joined to form unity government.
Please vote here.

Even if PR takes over the fed govt, BN must play the role of an effective and credible opposition. We must not allow one political party ever again to dominate the politics of our country. A two party system is a very good alternative or at least a two coalition system. Even in Spore they realised this and introduce sparring partners to keep their MPs on their toes.
For democracy to flourish dissenting views are necessary; alternative ways of solving problems are also necessary. Healthy debates are like brainstorming sessions to find the best possible solutions to the country problems.

When top politicians are in power they used a different lingo, and after retirement they finally speak some human language but still, we unsure whether they are sincere or not?
"Mirror, mirror, what do I see during my tenure?"
** Answer:
Corruption, dysfunctional coalition;
Draconian laws;
Paralysed Legislature;
Diseased judiciary;
Impotent Ministerial backbone, self-serving/arrogant/racist;
Political Hegemony of warlords and own brand of justice within own party.
Etc, etc
Opposition being ridiculed, jailed and bullied during 23 years and now, suddenly they are important!

It is time to end UMNO and the BN's abuse of power. It is time to put an end to police brutality and corruption. It is time for Najib to show us how sincere he is by bringing to justice those police officers who have taken the law into their own hands.

Eh Why not? Since everyone wants to be tuan.
Ketuanan Dayak!
Ketuanan Iban!
ketuanan Orang Asli
and ketuanan anybody who wants to be tuan.

Sejak Merdeka, tak pernah UMNO/BN menjadi pihak Pembangkang. biarlah pilihan raya umum 13, 14 dan yang ke 15; dan yang berterusan UMNO/BN jadikan pihak pembangkang. Biarlah UMNO/BN mempelajari bagaimana memperkuatkan peranan pihak pembangkang demi kebaikan rakyat.
Not until you unlearn and learn, necessary as reflection of ruling parties yourselves; you would not deem to say you are qualified to rule this country better. Make more sense to you???

He is basically saying that BN is finished and hope that BN will still continue as an opposition party!
Of course, now that PR is in the driver's seat and Najis will be the last BN warlord PM.
But I doubt BN will even survive as a credible opposition party. Perhaps may be PAS when they are sacked from PR if they persist with their hollow interpretation of their holy book sans Tok Guru.
