Razak Baginda gets doctorate from Oxford

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 – Political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, who was at the centre of a high-profile trial for abetment in the murder of a Mongolian woman until his acquittal late last year, has been awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in International Relations by Oxford University, one of the world’s top universities.

Dr Abdul Razak, 49, told Bernama here today that he submitted his doctorate dissertation in September 2006 but the university put it on hold because of his arrest two months later in connection with the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.

“When I was acquitted and released from prison on Oct 31 last year, I wrote back to the university, they revived the whole process and early this year they told me that I had passed and been awarded the Doctorate of Philosophy (DPhil). At Oxford, the Doctorate is called DPhil and is equivalent to PhD in other universities,” said Dr Abdul Razak.

He said in October, he would take up an appointment as a senior associate member of St Anthony’s College at the university.

In this capacity, he will undertake research on international issues.

Dr Abdul Razak, who studied at Oxford’s Trinity College in preparation for his doctorate, said he hoped more Malaysians would strive to study at top universities.

“There have been very few Malaysians who made it to Oxford, fewer still who obtained DPhil and even fewer among them are Malays,” he said.

He also said he was in the midst of writing a book of his life with the focus on his 22 months under remand in the Sungai Buloh Prison during the trial.

Two policemen, Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, 33, and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, 37, who were charged for the murder were found guilty and sentenced to death. Both have appealed against the conviction and sentence. – Bernama
