KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 – With no love lost between him and Lee Kuan Yew, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad pulled no punches today and called the Singapore leader “a little Emperor … of a tiny Middle Kingdom” lecturing Malaysian leaders on how to run the country in his recent “triumphant visit to Malaysia”.
The longest-serving Malaysian prime minister also took a swipe at his successor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, calling him “the great 5th Prime Minister” who had decided not to build a new bridge or settle other outstanding issues with the island republic when Johoreans said they did not want to sell sand to Singapore for its reclamation works.
“During Lee Kuan Yew’s triumphant visit to Malaysia, he made it known to the Malaysian supplicants that Singapore regards the lands within 6,000 miles radius of Singapore as its hinterland. This includes Beijing and Tokyo and, of course, Malaysia,” Dr Mahathir said in posting at his popular www.chedet.cc.
He did not meet Kuan Yew, who is Singapore’s longest-serving prime minister, during the latter’s eight-day visit to Malaysia which ended today. The two leaders had an acrimonious relationship while in power.
“Of course this self-deluding perception places Singapore at the centre of a vast region. It is therefore the latter day Middle Kingdom. The rest are peripheral and are there to serve the interest of this somewhat tiny Middle Kingdom,” he added.
Dr Mahathir pointed out Kuan Yew’s explanation that Singapore Chinese would control the “Iskandar whatever” was not justified as Malays could work there, sarcastically saying “It is good to know that Malays can also work in their own country. I wonder as what? Maybe someone should make a study of the Malays of Singapore just to know what it is like to be a Malay minority in their own country”
He has been a long-term critic of the Iskandar development corridor launched by Abdullah three years ago, saying Singapore would dominate Malaysian territory, which is modelled on the fast-growing Shenzen region across Hong Kong.
Dr Mahathir also picked up his pet peeve about the price of raw water being sold to Singapore at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons under two agreements made in the 1960s.
“Lee says it was absurd for the former Prime Minister of hinterland Malaysia to ask to increase it to RM8 per 1,000 gallons. I don’t know where he got this. Some Malaysian officers did suggest this figure but we were ready to bargain and maybe settle for RM3.
“And why not? Johor sells raw water to Malacca for 30 sen, 1,000% higher than to Singapore. And Malacca is, I believe, a part of Malaysia! Some Malaysians may see the irony of this,” he added.
Reserving some vitriol for his favourite whipping boy, Abdullah, Dr Mahathir said, “The great 5th Prime Minister has decided that since the people of Johor did not want to sell sand to Singapore, Malaysia would not build any bridge, straight or crooked, or negotiate and settle the other issues like the Central Provident Fund, the Railway land.
“Maybe the 5th Prime Minister thinks he is punishing Singapore. Actually he is giving Singapore what its wants, including the 3 sen per 1,000 gallons water until 2060. Think of how many grains of nasi lemak we can buy with 3 sen in 2060. Imagine what 1,000 gallons will earn for Singapore at that time. Can’t think of a more astute PM for Malaysia,” he added
He also made a stinging observation about Kuan Yew’s visit to Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Ipoh, Penang, Kota Bharu and Kuantan with his delegation in the past week.
“All those who met the great man from the little country were lectured on how Malaysia should be run. We should not have any more problems now. We have been told the direction to take. MCA must help Umno to win because Singapore does not want an Islamic party like PAS to win. We must ensure this.
“Sorry, PAS. Working with the DAP, the offspring of PAP has not endeared you to Mr Lee,” he wrote.
But he promised this was not the end of his diatribe against Kuan Yew.
“I have a lot more to say about this little Emperor but I will reserve it for later,” Dr Mahathir vowed.

One can understand his salvo against LKY, because LKY most probably is much more respected worldwide and held in high esteem in many world capitals. Mahathir's ego was heavily punctured when LKY did not visit him, and to add insult to injury, the Singapore MM met the people he dislikes, PAS leaders and of course Abdullah Badawi. So it is only natural for a humiliated Mahathir to lash out at LKY. Even before that his lapdog Matthias Chang had already shot diatribes at LKY. Najib too spurned Mahathir and the latter also did not like the idea of Najib agreeing to a 3rd bridge between Changi in Singapore and tip of Southeastern Johor. If Najib had agreed to reviving the causeway bridge concept which Badawi scrapped, then Mahathir would have praised him. As it is Mahathir was also angry with Najib, but perhaps he chose not to antagonize the PM..for the moment. Let najib lose the Manek Urai by-election, then Mahathir will draw out his daggers! On the whole Mahathir is a sour grape. Unlike LKY, Mahathir saw it fit to repudiate any agreement he drew up earlier with Singapore, which explains greatly why so many bilateral issues remain unresolved. While Malaysians and Singaporeans applaud LKY's visit and heap accolades on him, Mahathir stands neglected and frustrated. Now we can understand his tantrums.

LKY went to visit all the states and must be wondering where the hell did Mahathir hid all those petroleum monies that he had stolen? Infrastructure wise Penang, a BN led states before PR took over is lacking compared to Seremban. Mind you, Seremban is under-developed and has seen no development in terms of infrastructure during the MBship of Isa Doeramun. Isa like Mahathir stole much of NS's wealth, namely forest compartments and lands.

So appreciate it if LKY tried to teach those good for nothing BN politicians a thing or two. It is for their own survival, really.

Next BN goverment will sell electricity to singapore for 5 sens per KWH till 2100. End of the day, be a slave to them as what happen during the colonial days. IF LKY is visiting all the major states - its can't be for holidays especially at his age. So Malaysians don't get caught like what happen in the 1960's when signing the water agreement. Our dictator Mahathir is such a sour grape bcos every achievements of his when benchmarked against LKY and Singapore can be considered at best mediocre.
The emperor and the dictator basically ruled their respective countries with an iron fist but there is one difference between them. Singapore and LKY dont tolerate corruption whereas our TDM is known as the father of corruption. That is one of the main reason why we are far behind Singapore in almost all aspects of our development. And the other reason is we practise mediocrity whereas they prefer meritocracy.
Whatever we may say of LKY and Singapore we must face the fact that their political elites and leaders have the interests of their country and citizens at the centre of every policy of their country. They think 20 years ahead and plan accordingly.
Here all our Umno/BNputras think of their self interests and how to inflate their personal wealth first. For example to be toll free we taxpayers have to fork out Rgt300billion to buy out all the privatised highways as reported in the Star. We have mortgaged the future earnings of our children and their children's children. We have corporate welfarism ie lopsided privatistion agreements and bailouts of the rich and powerful with taxpayers money but screw the raykat with no social safety net when things turn bad eg PKFZ, Tajuddin of MAS, subsidies to Proton for 25 yrs and continuing etc. etc
All these happened during Mahathir time as PM of Malaysia.

Sounds like a sour grape to me, considering that during his reign as the PM, he incited Malaysians against Singapore instead of learning from their successes or cooperating with them in furthering Malaysian interests as a whole. I suppose his article in chedet is probably attempting to do the same, yet again.
Whatever Mahathir's reasons for doing so, he simply can't side track the fact that, to many, he is nothing but a self serving failed PM when compared to MM Lee! Didn't Mahathir cried like a spoiled child once, infront of an Umno convention admitting that he had failed?
The world has changed since, Malaysians have changed since and that sad old sour grape just cannot accept it because it is not to his liking!
The Minister Mentor's visit and the reception he got from BN and opposition leaders can be considered a welcome and a success. That's such a slap on Mahathir's face. Weren't those BNs 'Soldiers' of his once?

I am just a housewife who does not know all the implications of the Iskandar development. But I have visited Pasir Gudang two years ago, the very big industrial estate in Johore and it was terrible. The air was dusty and polluted,the roads were in bad shape, full of pot holes with no proper lanes for the many workers who rode motorcycles etc etc.I was told that fatal accidents involving motorcyclists are knocked down everyday. I felt so sorry for the poor workers. In contrast, when I visited a similar industrial estate in Singapore, the contrast was stark..the well kept broad roads, the lovely trees etc made me so ashamed. If Singapore can bring in some systems, knowledge, standards to Johore, and benefit the workers in Johore, I think we should welcome it.
If the CEO of the company, and in this case the Prime Minister, allows in a visitor into the premises. we should at least be dignified and courteous to them and not rave and rant as though we are not part of the company and are not supportive of the CEO.There was a time when Mahathir criticised the Americans ,as though they are the natural enemies of Malaysia on one hand and yet on the other hand we wanted and needed their investors to come into the country.That brought such embarrassment to those of us who saw the irony of that. I think we should learn that we should not be scolding our visitors and be rude all the time.

They have not much resources, like land and natural resources, still they are way ahead of Malaysia.
The difference is simple. In Singapore, is pure meritrocracy. Results counts !! And the public and citizen will enjoy from this.

Singapore definately have better ministers and public servants that Malaysia. They are paid quite well indeed to avoid them indulging in corruption. Our public servants are paid a pittance and that is why they resort to all sort of corruption. We can learn a lot from our neighbours. They pride themselves in the areas of human capital and not in mega projects as we Malaysians do. They don't have a national car, nor the world's tallest twin tower nor a billion dollar adminstrative capital and yet they are economically better off than us. We Malaysians pride ourselves in useless infrastructure projects and do not spend enough on developing our human capital. Accept the fact that we lose out to our Singaporean neighbour and start learning from them. Definately, they have much we can learn.

Mahathir has lost the plot altogether. I suppose in his senility, he continue to draw some sympathy from the illiterates. If he have the gumption's, he should stand up and take on Kuan Yew face to face. What a coward taking pot shots from his corner. I dare him to turn off the water supply. Look at this carefully. For all their successes, some people are no royalty of any sort, for they lack the "Noble Qualities" that any who dare consider themselves royalty should display. The epithet " Little Emperor " is being too casually thrown about here and will only inflate a low minded person's sense of self esteem.
What low minded behaviors do ignoble COMMONERS indulge in?
1) NEPOTISM : Reserving public executive and military posts for children and relatives. / Granting technology monopolies to relatives children (Biotech / Telecoms etc.)
2) CRONYISM : Creating Cronies of Ministers by raising salaries to unheard of levels worldwide
3) CORRUPTION OF PRINCIPLES : Corrupting morals of Ministers and Bureaucrats by raising salaries / Corrupting morals of weaker politicians who succumb to greed and ease of political expedience instead of serving the people. What do you end up with? A culture of worshippers of money, a very dangerous type of person who has been 'brought up' to show no loyalty to any nation in reality but the paymaster.

Corruption and salaries have no connection whatsover. A poorer person is not necessarily more corrupt than a richer person and vice versa. Its the culture, one's self respect, self pride, dignity, discipline, greed and good principles, fear and respect of the law and of God etc that makes a difference between one who is corrupt and one who is not corrupt. So comparing salaries between Spore and Mysia as being the reason for a more corrupt country is not the answer and will never be. So increasing salaries or wages is no cure for corruption.

Let's go back to history when Singapore was kicked out of the federation of Malaysia.
One country which had no resources started thinking that the Kiasu spirit will strengthen the people's competitiveness. They then worked hard and turned a strategic weakness into a strength: thus the emergence of a developed kiasuland with GDP per capita in Asia second only to Japan.
The other country which had plenty of resources, timber, rubber palm oil, petrol, gas, etc found that it could afford to be a bit complacent and lepak. Thus the bolehlah attitude pervaded the whole civil service and infected the corporate and personal cutlture of the people.
So Tun Mahathir, pls take note: The morale of these two countries is that bolehland will always be lagging behind kiasuland merely because of different attitudes of mind and spirit. Nothing to do with physical resources or whether water was transacted at 3 sen.

Certainly actions speak louder than words. If such a little kingdom can be so internationally successful and rich and practice fairness to all its citizens, I would rather be a small revered king in this small kingdom than a big corrupted kingdom with a ruthless King. As far as I am concerned while not everyone may agree with LKY but certainly the people there will come to his defence because they revere and recognise Singapore is successful because of him laying all the right strong foundations. No corruption, justice for all, invests for the nation. As for Tun, who cares especially now it is clear more and more how he has damaged the integrity of justice and fairness of our courts and his championing of Ketuanan Melayu at the expense of himself denying and forgetting his own roots! One thing I always admired Tun for is that he could see hidden gems (germs?) in Osu Bin Sukam and Khir Toyo and picked them from political obscurity to become Chief Ministers. Thus have I heard, some American was asked about Malaysia and he replied, isn't Malaysia the Capital of Singapore? TDM, what is there to compare lah.
