UPDATED
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The Sultan of Johor has rejected the proposed third bridge linking Malaysia and Singapore, in the latest show of power by the royalty after he was apparently not even consulted by either government on the proposal.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had said recently the government was keen on pursuing the idea of a third bridge near the eastern coast of Johor.
But the proposal has already drawn some criticism from Umno leaders who are concern Malaysia would have to lift the ban on the sale of sand to Singapore before the bridge could be built.
The Johor Sultan’s remarks, delivered by the Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ibrahim Ismail at the opening of the state legislature this morning, are the latest rebuff for Najib over the bridge.
“I was told by the Sultan that he does not agree with the proposal to build a third bridge,” said the Tunku Mahkota.
A number of Umno leaders have already said that if Singapore wants sand as part of the deal for the third bridge, it’s a “no go”.
For them, whatever the benefits the construction of the third bridge may bring must not come at the expense of the country’s sovereignty.
This issue came up when Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said that it would not make sense for it to agree on a third bridge if Johor does not lift its ban on the export of sand to the republic, which has been in place since 1997.
Government officials say Najib’s administration is willing to resolve outstanding bilateral issues with Singapore and consider lifting the ban on sale of sand to the republic.
But Najib’s efforts, ironically, may be undermined by his own party members, especially those from the southern states who appear reluctant to see Singapore expand through land reclamation with Malaysian sand.
Najib had mooted the idea of a third bridge when he visited Singapore last month.

back to the topic, did sultan give any reason for it ?

If we allow the sultan this time then they can similarly object to anything done by the government in future.
But then, our country is now standing on its head, so anything is possible.

Rather the face saving for so many people.
Khairy shot first.
He rather burn bridges than sell sand to Singapore.
Please be clear.
The Johor Sultan was not consulted...
That is not the job of LKY...Mr Godfather.
It was Najib who proposed 3rd bridge to Singapore.
Now Najib's backside is fried...
Performance first...aiyahh, Najib failed to meet the sultan...
Anyway, when Khairy said that...about burning bridges.
I think LKY already planned to pull out altogether...
How to do business with a country that keeps changing the goal posts????
Next time want to do business, first talk to Khairy, then the sultan and finally Najib...
That should be the order of business dealing in Malaysia.
That goes Iskandar project and all the corridors...Pah Lah's projects cannot jalan.

Selling sand is like selling 'tanah' and when you sell sand and water, it is like selling 'tanah-air'. So when nationalistic fanatics come into play, it becomes a sensitive issue, otherwise selling sand is just like another commodity no different from palm oil, you just have to name the right price for your depleting resource.
It is best for the royalty to stay out of the bridge issue!

M'sia doesn't want to sell the sand because S'pore use the sand to reclaimed land along straits of johore. This has narrow down the width of the straits and thus blocking the movement of ships along the straits to reach the Malacca port.

Sultan says NO because Najib was arrogant and thought little of his Highness, plus only a Totally New
Bridge will Najib be able to enjoy new benifits from it, Crooket Bridge benefits already pocketed
by someone else.
Don't play play with the Sultan of Johor as his Highness may Ban Najib from entering the State altogether then susah juga.
Last time Mahathir abstracted their Fangs BUT now Najib had them implanted again, guess he never
thought of this possibility that he would have to face his Art of Handy work, miss calculated move.
Who knows Najib might have a way of neutralising those Fangs, will wait to see his next move on the Check Board, getting intersting by the day.

but if goverment want to mean business, please by all mean sell it with the most reasonable price(very high indeed). so high that we can compensate what we lost in the water deal in the past and also in the future.if singaporean still want our sand they will buy it!
and also, i don't see the sultan's remark as an interference in the policy making. it just a great relief to us the commoner whose words sometime doesn't make sense to the cabinet and provides some check-and-balance if the PM' 'head' got any bigger than it should be...

Also Bolehland's big shots where mega projects are concerned, there is always the statement, " the majority of the rakyat or Johoreans for that matter , support this or that project."
But it never reveal if there really was a survey taken. Its just their statements. I guess now the Sultan has spoken, would that silence the mouth of one TUN?

i think the major issue why we musn't sell the sand/land is because singapore mainly uses it to expand their solid land.hence, it could affect the border between our countries in the future. i am not sure, but so far that i read, the disputed border in water area is determined by the distance from the landshore. ///
Wrong. The border used to be determined by locating the deepest point between the two shores. However, precisely because reclamation will affect the deep channel, it was subsequently agreed that the border will be fixed in situ - a fixed coordinate that is agreed upon. In other words, the border is immovable. So, those who are harping on losing your sea or sovereignty, you have been hoodwinked by that master liar who led you by the nose for 22 years.

To build or not, federal must first out what the residents want. They are the one who cross both side of the causeway everyday, not Najib, the cabinet ministers or UMNO cronies who live in the central.
Johor Sultan is speaking out what the Johoreans think. It really doesn't doesn't make sense to build a bridge with hundred of millions and it's way too far from the city centre to solve traffic congestion. It might turn out to be another white elephant project at the end and need ten of millions of public fund to maintain it.

Think again - in all probability, the demand for the supply of sand from Malaysia (when they actually do not need) is just a subtle way of LKY saying "Malaysia - no Thank you.

Tun Dr Mahathir kept misleading rakyat that Singapore has profiteered from the water agreements claiming that Singapore had profited by buying raw water at 3 Malaysian sen per 1,000 gallons and selling treated water back to Johor at 50 sen.
However, after from google search, Singapore pays 3 sen for the raw water only because Singapore bears the full cost of treating the water, as well as building, operating and maintaining the pumps and pipelines.
By selling treated water to Malaysia at 50 sen while the real cost of treating the water was RM2.40 per 1,000 gallons, Singapore was in fact absorbing RM1.90 per 1,000 gallons in cost.
Moreover, while Johor is legally entitled to buy 17 million gallons a day (mgd) of treated water from Singapore daily, it has chosen to buy 37 mgd.
Why is Johor secretly 'profiteering' from rakyat and yet still blaming Singapore? Dirty Politik?
