KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s bid to appoint his key aide as a director of Petronas is being resisted by the board and could put the Premier at odds with the national oil corporation's influential adviser, former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
According to senior government officials, the board of directors of Petroliam Nasional (Petronas) raised reservations over the proposal to appoint Omar Mustapha at its monthly meeting last month.
Omar is one of the premier's closest political confidants.
The reservations were made on the grounds that he had defaulted on his scholarship loan agreement with Petronas two decades ago.
Najib, however, is determined to have Omar appointed as a director. He ordered the Petronas board to review its position over the appointment at a meeting this week, the government officials said.
Petronas officials have declined comment, and Omar could not be reached.
Dr Mahathir, who government officials said has been briefed about the situation, told The Straits Times yesterday that it was Najib's prerogative as Premier to “appoint a man who failed to honour his obligation to Petronas when he was given a scholarship by it”.
“Generally, I would say that it is not a good thing to appoint such a person,” he said in a written response.
Najib's office did not respond to requests for comments.
Petronas, Malaysia's only company on the Fortune 500 listing of the world's most profitable companies, is considered to be the country's most efficiently managed state-owned corporation.
Incorporated in August 1974, the corporation has firmly established itself as a global energy player over the last two decades. It currently operates in over 30 countries, and its overseas operations, including exports, account for more than 75 per cent of its revenue.
Many oil industry experts and bankers credit the oil company's phenomenal growth to the government's hands-off approach to the running of the oil corporation.
Omar, 38, has emerged as one of the closest political confidants of Najib and is often tapped for advice on economic and financial matters.
“A politician in Petronas may have other agenda which may or may not be in keeping with the national interest,” Dr Mahathir said in his comments to The Straits Times.
He added: “I think it is far better if no politician is allowed to interfere with commercial decisions which may not be good for the corporation.”
Positions on the board of Petronas and its subsidiary companies have traditionally been reserved for very senior civil servants and prominent private sector personalities.
Omar graduated from Oxford on a scholarship from Petronas in the mid-1990s and worked briefly with the national oil corporation and another government-linked corporation.
He then joined McKinsey & Co, where he worked for the international consulting company in London and Malaysia.
He left McKinsey in early 2002 to set up his own consultancy firm called Ethos with several close friends. Two years later, he was tapped by Najib, who was then the deputy prime minister, to become his special officer.
Government officials familiar with Omar's proposed appointment to the board of Petronas said that the national oil corporation takes a firm view against scholarship defaulters.
Omar did not complete the required number of years of service with the oil corporation or a related government agency as stipulated in his scholarship agreement. — The Straits Times

By the way what so special on Omar that you are dying to see him in the board? Is he talented as Daim Zainuddin? Is he on par with the current Petronas Its funny though that to draft a simple KPI you have to assigned to some consultant company whereby many retired civil services, ex ministers, ex politicians be it oppositions who are willing to work for a small fees and come up with a reliable and meaningfull KPI base on the aspiration of the Rakyat and not the 'proffesional'. Your openness on the unity goverment is a blunder, the third bridge another blunder that require 'damage control,Anyway blunders always ended up in video zonkers!. Remember Datu Najib, the real watchman are people like me and those people reading the blogs, newspaper of course the the 'voters' are the diehard fans of yours, there are the real 'watchman' who will then decides whether you stay or off you go.~!

On one hand, Bursa want to show it is world class with independant directors that are clean, honorable and transparent, yet here, the PM tried to put someone with cloudy and defaulted background into the financial backbone of this country.
This is going to be definitely a one term PM.Before he can give us a satisfactory answer to PKFZ, he is now creating another potential "bomb".

Najib proposed his name to be appointed as Director of Petronas.
---
The reservations were made on the grounds that he had defaulted on his scholarship loan agreement with Petronas two decades ago.
What???
Omar Mustapha defaulted on his scholarship loan agreement with Petronas -
a scholarship for him to study at Oxford, England.
And no action taken against him for breaking the agreement,
What lah????
This scholarship loan from Petronas.
There are many others - many Malays - also took loans from Petronas.
Omar Mustapha is the first one to default the agreement -
He is not the last one either.
There are many others who considered the loan as their grandfather's money -
Why should they pay back????
If Petronas care to publish the list of names of those who took the loan and never fulfill the agreement -
You will see long long list that will frighten you - all the money in billions.
Enough money to build Penang 2nd bridge, Singapore 3rd bridge or crooked bridge, etc.
We have not talked about Mara loans - and many students when they graduated also defaulted the scholarship loan agreement. Again, the amount defaulted are in billions - enough to build another twin towers.
Perhaps MACC should start investigating Omar Mustapha.
Mahathir knows this character and that he defaulted his scholarship loan agreement -
why no action taken against him????
In Singapore, Omar Mustapha would be sitting in his jail right now, wouldn't he????
In Malaysia, he is a free man.
What about Khairy Jamaluddin, himself Oxford graduate - did he break any loan agreement?
What about Razak Baginda, another Oxford graduate???

But with this "apa nama" 's paradoxical , silly and childish comments in the past on various issues, I still have very much doubt about his sincerity in his opinions. For sure I will believe in him if he starts picking up the fine skills of making roti from the Jap.I think it is still not to late to do that.

Najib just can't ignore the fact that to “appoint a man who failed to honour his obligation to Petronas when he was given a scholarship by it”. How can our PM just brush aside such critical issue on this board appointment?
This is NO child play as the country need competent talents to help grow Petronas but not just any obsolete political cronies drawing big fat salary sitting there by doing nothing beneficial.
It is time Najib look into this appointment seriously as the old UMNO/BN past redundant tradition should be removed. What ever decisions he made he is constantly reminded to place the best interests of the nation & rakyat as the top priority instead of on political party.
We need a complete change of govt, not go on with outdated hypocritical politicians with vague & rhetoric words on CHANGE, REFORM and "1 Malaysia".

We couldn't careless whether Omar could have graduated from Oxford or Cambridge or has worked with whichever world reknown companies, but if Najib insists of having him in Petronas' board, he serious put his own belief of competence and trustworthiness in serious test.
For many of us, we simply cannot trust a person to dip his hands in such an important GLC.
Are we running short of capable persons in Malaysia?

Hello Jib, boss, got some time to read my comments ah...? I'm sure you do, since you have time to spare for "sodomy victims".....
Here I go:-
1. "The reservations were made on the grounds that he had defaulted on his scholarship loan agreement with Petronas two decades ago. Najib, however, is determined to have Omar appointed as a director."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duh....aren't you on a mission to achieve "performance now"...??
So, how can you achieve "performance now" by putting in a loan defaulter in a position of executive influence in the very company that he defaulted? Isn't this a lesson in Corporate Governance 101? By defaulting - in other words, he sapu the money - you're putting in a crook to manage the nation's largest source of wealth?
Hmmmm. This sure sounds like another one of those Razak Baginda style-of-appointments; put someone close to you to "take care of the kitty...$$..."
I wonder what Omar's first decision will be once he's on board? Write - off his loan from the books of Petronas?
2. "Omar, 38, has emerged as one of the closest political confidants of Najib and is often tapped for advice on economic and financial matters."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I'm not sure how Omar became a "closest...confidant".....maybe his dad played golf with you or maybe he was carrying shopping bags for Rosmah....who knows?
But "often tapped for advice on economic and financial matters"?
Once again, on the merit of "PERFORMANCE now", tell me, I pray, just how has Omar performed if the RM70b supplementary budget you put up has failed to stop the recessionary wheel in the national economy? I'm sure you referred to Omar for the numbers, right?
Hmmmm. Seems like all this maneuvering by you is just to find your next runner boy ala Razak Baginda.
You see, I always thot your "Performance Now" is just another kelentong session from you.
Pssst. Don't send Omar to Mongolia for errands.

What happened to the list of government loan defaulters which the govt threatened to pursue?
This also brings to mind a piece of news not too long ago where the govt suggested a repayment of RM10 a week to be RETORTED by this 'group' that they are not baggers and felt insulted with such suggestion by the government !!!!

Not sure why Umno goons love Mckinsey people, a number of GLCs have senior mgmt made up of ex-Mckinsey staff. Is it coz their exposure is so great, or they are damn smart, or very ethical, or some Umno goon has a stake in it, or just that Mckinsey people have learned how to drink coffee with all sorts of crooks & despots and everything can kautim. Best way to screw up a company or country is to get a consultant to run it.
No need smart & cunning plans lah, just run a good clean efficient trustworthy government and the people will love you (but that's like asking a fly to stay away from shit).

That's the very reason the people reject UMNO and their allies.
They live by and practise Arrogance, Corruption, Opportunism, Manipulation, Domineering, Dominance, Avarice, Self-serving, etc., etc. at the EXPENSE of others who are equally if not more deserving of government aid and assistance.
There are THOUSANDS of Omar Mustafas who defaulted all sorts of scholarships and government assistance.
Contrary to all that, many non-Malays who are generally law abiding and would repay every sen owed to the government or whatever institutions, ARE sidelined and marginalised and intentionally overlooked in the awarding of such aids. They have to go begging here and there to get some meagre help.
That's why so many people were dejected and felt cheated and discriminated against. No one could blame them if they go elsewhere and pledge their allegiance. And UMNO and their cohorts would be the quickest to condemn them for turning their backs to the country, without bothering to acknowledge the real reasons, or purposely and conveniently ignore them.
So much for a government and their supporters who claim to be fair to all!

Tan Sri Hassan Merican should continue until the economic chaos and oil price are more stable then only he should let his deputy to continue after having understood the oil & gas industry. A new face like Omar Ong at 38 years old without enough knowledge in the business is just to risky.
It is just like Khairy too young and inexperience to head the Kazanah Nasional Bhd and being the UMNO youth head. He was flatly rejected by the Khazanah board and sidelined in UMNO.
Najib should stop listening to Rosmah and make his own decision after discusing with the cabinet.

Petronas workers (more than 30,000) are not only loyal to the company but also admire good bosses like Tan Sri Hassan, Datuk Anuar, Datuk Wan Zul, Datuk Nasa and the Old School gang. It is strongly rumoured that if Omar Ong takes over Petronas at the expense of Tan Sri Hassan Merican, thousands of Petronas employees will resign and join their competitors like Saudi Aramco, Shell and Schlumberger. Take note of that Najib, or no more RM6 billion bonus dividend to the Government this year from Petronas.

No wonder there are always HICCUPS and UNIMAGINABLE excuses in the repayment of loans by the defaulters.
When there are outcries from the public, the government would be seen to be taking some form of actions to recoup the dues, and stern warnings and all sorts of threats were issued to the defaulters.
BUT, when the outcries died out, the actions and threats would also dwindle and stopped altogether! And the defaulters ARE happy again, laughing at the INACTION by the government.
What is all this crap? There seems to be NO concerted effort to go after the defaulters.
No wonder the defaulters do not care a damn about repaying. No wonder the problems persist. No wonder there are always such HIGH demands for LOANS, that need NOT be repaid!
No wonder the EPF is facing difficulties getting back funds that had been used for loan purposes dished out years and years ago!
It is the people's savings which is being abused.

On one hand, PTPTN is busy getting back its loan. But Najib related people can travel around freely and even get higher post as time goes by, without even paying back his scholarship default.
Why double standard? Omar no need to pay but other people need to pay?
