KUALA LUMPIR, June 24 – The Home Ministry will amend any act under the ministry that is necessary for improvement and to be in line with current situations, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
He said the existing acts were legislated when the country was facing various threats including the Emergency and the Confrontation that needed new laws that were effective and relevant.
“There are weaknesses and lacking in the (existing) acts that may be behind time and we will amend. We need to make changes and not adversely affect our core business and responsibilities that is to ensure stability, security and the interests of our races and country,” he said.
Hishammuddin said this to reporters after officiating the General Police Equipment Exhibition (GPEE) 2009 here today.
He said the Home Ministry and agencies under it were ready to face the people in amending the acts even though the action may not be popular in the eyes of the people.
“Tomorrow, in Parliament, I will answer regarding the Internal Security Act (ISA) in our effort to see its position, amendment and follow-up action ... including announcing how many have been detained till now under the ISA,” he said.
Hishammuddin said improving the existing acts was necessary in view of the threats now being very much different from the threats when the acts were legislated.
“Crime related to terrorism, human trafficking, drugs smuggling needs acts that are appropriate to the existing landscape,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said the Home Ministry would not be hasty in buying new equipment to enhance the ability of its officers and its departments.
“It depends on the Key Performance Index (KPI) and Key Results Area (KRA) that will be announced soon whether to buy new equipment. – Bernama
