KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Now it is Hindraf's turn to deal with disagreements from within its ranks. Senior leader V.S. Ganapathi Rao came out unexpectedly to defend Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over the Kampung Buah Pala demolition issue.
One of the symbolic "Hindraf Five" detained under the Internal Security Act after a mass rally in 2007, he questioned Hindraf's aggressive stance against the DAP secretary-general over what some claim to be the last Indian heritage village on the island.
Speaking to The Malaysian Insider, he said: "It appears that some people are using the Hindraf name to manipulate the issue to criticise DAP." He was referring to calls for Lim to resign as chief minister for his failure to solve the displacement of over 30 households in the village.
"We had agreed to end public demonstrations and when a Hindu temple was demolished in Kuala Lumpur, nobody said anything. So why are they doing this to Lim? To make Barisan Nasional happy?" he added.
Despite other Hindraf leaders such as national co-ordinator S. Jayathas and chairman P. Waythamoorthy having strongly criticised Lim, to the point of calling him a "heartless man," Ganapathi called for those involved not to politicise the issue but to let the chief minister do his best.
He also questioned the authority of Waythamoorthy and Jayathas to represent Hindraf's stand on the issue.
"Who made Waythamoorthy chairman? There was no election. The few of us just sat down one day and decided to start Hindraf. There is no one leader in charge. But if he wants to claim to be chairman, that is his problem," said Ganapathi.
He also said that Jayathas was appointed co-ordinator by Waythamoorthy but without the agreement of the rest of the leaders including those in the Hindraf Five.
Ganapathi said he was saddened that "those who had not contributed" are now claiming to be leaders and causing cracks in the organisation.
He said Hindraf was "losing its direction" with political parties and individual agendas coming to the fore.
"I do not see the team working together anymore," he said.
Ganapathi added that since the Kampung Buah Pala issue was caused by the previous administration under Barisan Nasional, Lim should now try to give the residents some alternatives and options even if the land cannot be acquired back from the developers due to the cost involved, a cost Lim claims would be more than "tens of millions of ringgit".

Yes, show us you are men of substance and buy back the land in the name of the Indian community and let that be known as "Little India" for all future generations...perpetually!!!!

i agree with ganapathi. what was said above and elsewhere. esp. about hindraf losing its direction.
i feel hindraf was too much to attack LGE and esp. asking for him to resign! and also to call for nationwide demo. if hindraf wants to support the villagers, fine but don't do it in an arrogant way.

BUT, DAP-led PR state government in Penang is doing one fine job here. Much much better than BN government. Yes we can feel the changes.
And yes, we believe LGE will help Buah Pala residents. They may not be granted to stay in Kg Buah Pala anymore, but for sure they will be lent a helping hand.
Penangites support LGE. We do, and we will.

The whole world knows what LGE is doing, he is doing a fine job and getting Penanag to the next level, and just for the sake of someone those Hindrafs and some KBP squatters committe has been bribes or ...... by BN to tarnish LGE name.
Legal actions has been announced and there is no way to get back the land cost it is sold legally, let LGE try to solve the issue or maybe relocate the place for the squatters to stay or otherwise the state government has to cough out at 10millions, its a big sum of money.
As ususal the BN government has created a big mass in Penang for LGE and comrades to solve. It is not easy than say, you can get the so called famous Utaya or Withaya to solve, I 'll bet you they will worsen the situation but if Samy Vellu probably will get rotten eggs. So just be patient, if this land is wanted back as historical reasons, then I suggest Uthaya and Withaya to buy back the land, getther national donation campaign to save Kampung Buah Pala, otherwise if they can't or ineffective to sort this problem, please let LGE sit down and talk to the squatters home owner what is the next course of action.
Ganapati, what you did is very construtive and good to point out the intentions of some people, especially those demons and puaka people from BN is capabable doing.

If this continues, then DAP, PAS, PKR and Hindraf are just no different from UMNO and BN.

According to a letter written today/yesterday:
Fact: The land used to be an Estate that was owned by the Brown family;
Fact: The Brown's returned to England;
It has been stated that the land was put under "Trusteeship" with the Plantation workers having ownership of their said homes.
Somehow during the last decade or so, the "Trustees" sold the land to a Cooperative that had links to UMNO Hierachy in Penang.
This Cooperative then sold it to the Developer.
However 67 Malaysian Insider readers have agreed with you, Mr/Ms WandererAUS. Somehow they think that Malaysians of Indian origin have not sacrificed for this country and that we have been taking tax payers money and being leaches on society.
The Bottom Line is that the land that they owned, under trusteeship has changed ownership. B4 the last elections, DAP said that they will dig to find out the truth. It appears that the truth has not yet surfaced.
BUT 68 bigots have surfaced like the proverbial stools.
