KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 – P. Uthayakumar will call on the United Nations to revoke George Town’s listing as a World Heritage site if the Penang government sits back and allow the demolition of Kampung Buah Pala.
The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader, today told The Malaysian Insider he was preparing to write to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and is undertaking the necessary research to make his case.
George Town, along with Malacca, was declared World Heritage sites by Unesco almost a year ago.
Uthayakumar, a lawyer by profession, said Penang does not deserve the Unesco recognition if it cannot even preserve the last and only Indian village on the island.
“Demolishing the settlement which has been around for over 100 years will not only destroy the homes of villagers but their way of life, livelihood and culture.”
The settlement of 41 families, most of whom are plantation workers and cowherds can trace their roots back five generations.
While Uthayakumar acknowledges it was the former BN state government which had allowed the land to be sold to a private developer, he maintains it’s the current government who must find a solution.
“We have gone to the village, the people there are desperate and they have pleaded with us to save their homes.”
He said despite denials, the issue was a racial one because authorities and the developer had earmarked Kampung Buah Pala because the people have no political clout.
“I would like to see them try and demolish a Malay village or Chinese fishing jetty on the Island.”
He cited the example of DAP pulling out of the Kedah state government because of the demolition of a pig abattoir.
“The DAP, like PKR and PAS, are supposed to be multiracial but they seem only to act when the issue affects the Malays or Chinese”.
He said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should offer the developer another site to build their condominiums while developing Kampung Buah Pala’s culture, heritage and history to draw more tourists to the island.

I hope the government (BN in Federal, or PR in Penang) do something to help the Indians. Improve their education level - make concessions if we must - so they won't continue to be divided and exploited by people like Uthayakumar. The Indians are citizens too. They must be helped to help themselves.

Mr. Uthaya, if your father had sold off his land legally, how are you to snatch it back from the purchaser? Cry and hope to get sympathy to get back the land, try again.

BN had allowed the land to be sold to a private developer. Why the residents are not camping and protesting outside the BNs office or MICs office?
The only way the current government can find a solution is to repurchase the land. But that would mean cost. Cost to the goverment means tax payers money. If Hindraf is in Mr.Lim's position, how would they solve the issue? Lets be fair.......to everyone

this case is akin to johorean pressuring the government not to sell water to singapore when the wheel can only be set in motion by the later agreeing to it rather than the former. these people just dont understand

Kg Buah Pala is now a privately held land and its title is in developer's hand. The land was sold by BN state government to the developer. Bear in mind that the land was never owned by the residents. YET, the developer did offer compensation to the residents, in which majority of them took the offer and moved on.
So what can be done by state government? Fork out tens of millions to buy back the land from the developer, which the developer may never agree?
On the other hand, the nature of A Setar pig abbatoir issue is totally different. Being the only abbatoir in Kedah state, it was requested by state government (note: State Government and NOT private developer) to move to another site, BUT, the new site was never identified. (There was once rumoured that State government will allocate a site in B Selambau, which is at least 60-80kms away and very remote, for this purpose).
This issue, to many people in Kedah, is clearly religiously and politically motivated.
Uthaya, as a lawyer, should know the difference between the two issues. He shouldnt try to twist around facts.
Worse, Uthaya shouldnt try to detroy the status of Penang as World Heritage Site, which is the pride of not only Penang and Malacca residents, but the people of Malaysia as well.
How about Utahya offer 1:1 contribution of a few millions to buy back Kg Buah Pala?

Maybe, a better idea is why not with your popularity riding high now, organise a charity drive to buy back the land for the villagers. Not counting the other races, who according to those in the drama are useless and self serving, on the indian population alone, not counting the wealth of the richest indian in malaysia, you should at least be able to raise RM30/- million?
That maybe, will resolve the matter and raise your popularity to at least demi god?

What has buah pala got to offer? Draw tourists? To see what? Cow dungs? As if there are no cows in their countries? What we have to offer are the squatter houses..that's all!!
Mr. Uthaya, if your father had sold off his land legally, how are you to snatch it back from the purchaser? Cry and hope to get sympathy to get back the land, try again.
FYI ,
the whhole of PEnang itself and the whole of Malaysia itself has got nothing to offer to tourists, evry thing in this country has only packaged nicely to be promated to the tourists, via promtions and so on. In essence they are nothing. Just think of all those HOMEstays in villages, new and traditional, are they actually somthing of world satndrds, there are dozens of them in Perak, run by Malays and Chinese. What do they have the Mona Lisa? Blue mosque? Great Wall? nothing. Just chickens running all over the place and of course cows. There was also talk of turning tht Pomelo orchards in Tambun into a tourist attraction. Something along the same lines as tht of Homestays and agro tourism. Wht is ridiculous, these very ppl who look down on a settlement of Indian dairy farmers, would thousands of RM to visit dairy farms on a package tour to NZ and Australia. McA talked of evan starting homestay progrrammes in New Villages and eventually turning them into tourist attraction. I live In a town which has many New Villages (u can guess which one as I have given some clues aerlier part) and I can tell they are just as terrible as any village in the Indian Subcontinent. Oh I forgot to mention those Felda homestays, If you've watched Lurah Bilut ypu would nw these setelments were no t CluB med. yet with govt funds and aid, now they somehow become tourist attractions!
As for tht abbatoir issue,
PAS has just teated DAp ppl as budak suruhans, I think ppl, typical of Kedahans to treat the minority like tht. If you have been with them you would know. The problem is not with PAS' Islamic credentials, its whether some in it can shake off racialism which is virulent in every thing in this country. Every matter is viewed through racial lenses first even religious matters by Malaysians. Thank God Bukit Selambau is remote or what the Malays, Thais and Chinese didn't would've been with an Indian settlement. (Bkt Selembau is constituency which has one of the highest g;e of Indian voters in Kedah)

Mad man always issue mad statement, because of Kampung Buah Pala, you ask Unesco to abandon George Town as heritage.
why has others Penangnite has to suffer just because of your EGO ?
