PENANG, July 3 – The entrance to the Gurney Park Condominium’s multi-storey car park at Persiaran Gurney here was badly damaged following the appearance of sinkholes last night.
The cracks and sinkholes were believed to have been caused by the construction work on a flat which is being built next to the car park.
The appearance of larger cracks has prompted the Penang City Council to issue a stop-work order on the developer to prevent any untoward incident.
Council president Tan Cheng Chui said the council had given a verbal stop-work directive to the developer and contractor of the two blocks of 43-storey flats and a written order would follow suit.
“The real cause of the sinkholes is still being probed but at the same time, we would like to take prompt action by ordering the developers to stop work immediately so as not to make matters worse,” he told reporters today after visiting the site.
Southwest district OCPD ACP Azam Abdul Hamid told reporters last night that a police team was despatched to the scene as soon as they received distress calls from residents of the condiminium.
Upon discovery of the cracks and sinkholes, police sealed the entrance to the car park as a safety measure.
“We hope that the residents will not panic and that the flat project developer will give their cooperation to us to facilitate investigation,” he said. – Bernama
