PENANG, July 4 — The Penang government is waiting for the consultant’s report on the cracks and sinkholes that occurred at the entrance to the Gurney Park Condominium’s three-storey car park at Persiaran Gurney here, on Thursday night.
Penang Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman, Chow Kon Yeow said the report was expected to be ready and submitted to the Penang Municipal Council tomorrow and further action would be taken based on the report.
He said the consultant was appointed by the developer of the two blocks of 43-storey apartments being built next to the condominium.
Over the past two days, the consultant would have monitored the cracks and soil movement at the entrance to determine the safety of the construction site, he told reporters, here today.
He also reiterated that initial investigation found that the cracks and sinkholes were caused by the construction work on the apartments which could have triggered soil movement in the area that affected the entrance to the car park.
“The car park has a very strong wall and piling structure, but the overall safety of the area will be determined after the report is completed,” he said.
Chow said the developer had been told to stop the construction work on the apartment and carry out repair work at the affected areas.
He also said the residents in the area need not worry and that no evacuation order was issued.
Bernama checks on the affected site today also found that the construction workers had covered the cracks and sinkholes with plastics to enable repair work to be carried out. – Bernama
