Vigneswaran loses defamation suit against NSTP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 – Former Youth and Sports Ministry parliament secretary S. Vigneswaran lost in his defamation suit in the High Court here today against New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP) and its three journalists over three newspaper reports, four years ago.

Justice Datuk Aziah Ali dismissed with costs Vignesawaran’s suit against the Malay Mail journalists Dennis Chua, Marhalim Abas, Rita Jong and NSTP. She made the decision in chambers.

In 2005, Vignesawaran filed a defamation suit against the four claiming that he was defamed in three articles in its June and August publications pertaining to the arrest and banishment of his brother under the Emergency Ordinance.

In his statement of claim, Vigneswaran said the articles gave the meaning, among others, that he was not fit to hold the position of the secretary of parliament to the ministry and MIC Youth chairman.

NSTP, in its statement of defence, said the articles were not defamatory in nature. – Bernama
