KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 – A 67 year-old woman was sentenced to three years’ jail by the Sessions Court here today after she was found guilty of operating a brothel five years ago.
In passing sentence, Judge Fathiyah Idris said the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case.
Lai Yoke Yin, 67, was charged with operating a brothel at No 2401, Wisma Cosway, Jalan Raja Chulan at 4pm on Dec 6, 2004. She was charged under Section 372 (1) (a) of the Penal Code and could be jailed up to 15 years, whipped and fined.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Geethan Ram Vincent asked the court to pass a heavy sentence on Lai as the case was of public interest.
“She did not plead guilty but was found guilty. It took a lot of the court’s time. Prostitution is a serious offence and has become rampant despite government efforts to stamp it out,” he said.
The prosecution called five witnesses while the defence called only one witness to the stand. Lai was represented by defence counsel Roslie Sulle. – Bernama
