KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 – Tommorrow, the MCA will propose to the Cabinet to maintain teaching science and mathematics in English at secondary school-level, said party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
He said the party needed to be mindful of the students in science or pure science streaming in Forms 4 and 5.
“As such, we should maintain using English as a medium of instruction in science and mathematics in secondary school-level because of the streaming,” he told reporters after chairing the pre-Cabinet meeting for MCA ministers and deputy ministers here today.
Ong also suggested that mathematics and science should be taught bi-lingual (Bahasa Melayu and English), if needed in Form 1 to 3, because the students might face problems in switching languages after they moved to Form 4.
Last Wednesday, the Government had annouced that the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in national schools would be reverted to the national language, effective 2012.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the teaching and learning of the two subjects in Chinese and Tamil national-type schools would be carried out in their respective mother tongue.
Ong said he would also suggest to the Cabinet to increase the time alloted for teaching the English subject in Chinese national-type primary schools (SJKC), by using the time slot previously used to teach science and mathematics in English.
“We note that the time alloted to teach the English subject in SJKC is far less than the national school (SK). Time allotment for teaching the subject in SK is 330 minutes for Standard 1 to 3 per week, while only 120 minutes are alloted for SJKC,” he said.
Ong said the party wanted the time allotted to teaching English to be increased to at least 180 minutes a week because it was worried of the English proficiency of SJKC students.
“All students in SJKC are required to learn three languages, that is Bahasa Melayu, English and Mandarin as compared to SK, so the time slot for teaching English is shorter than SK,” he said. – Bernama

Without a satisfactory and acceptable explanation, MCA could lose considerable support, especially among urban voters in the next General Election.

MCA's effort to rethink the language issue in the teaching of Maths and Science is bold and commendable. Its forthcoming recommendation to the Cabinet in reconsidering to revert the decision back to the teaching of Maths and Science in English was not an after thought, or due to certain political pressure. It is still not too late and neither is it a flip-flop decision in such a crucial issue that will affect the future of our children.
Personally, I had supported the government's decision to revert the teaching of the two core subjects from English to Bahasa Malaysia gradually from 2012, taking into consideration the various options to be taken by the government on a win-win situation for all Malaysians. Today, I fully support MCA's initiative and share their aspirations and concern to submit their new proposal for the Cabinet's reconsideration. Nobody should politicise our educational policy for their own agenda.
I believe MCA's proposal to teach Maths and Science in English beginning from secondary school level, will provide a better solution to reduce the impact of the implementation for the benefit of the teachers and students. Let us start the new educational policy to teach both the subjects in Bahasa Malaysia gradually at primary school level, and at the same time enhance the teaching of English, Mandarin and Tamil at all levels.
The teaching and usage of Bahasa Malaysia should also be enhanced along with English in order to implement a better educational policy. Let us move forward in creating a better future for this generation and the next, with a sincere commitment and not based on emotions and vengeance from all quarters.

Isn't that Deputy Wee guy an MCA member? Why only now?
Is this part of your 'Save Mandarin First' campaign?
Ong Tee Kiat, right after the last GE you talk arrogantly about the need of your fellow BN leaders to change their this and that. You have happily put all the blame on others!
But in actual fact you are a STRONG MEMBER of the moronic team. You are in all counts the major face of all the problems.
STOP acting as if YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CARES.
DOUBLE FACE is written all over your arrogant face.

Come on, don't burden the students too much, there are students subjects to be taught in Malay e.g. Sejarah, Geografi, Moral, lukisan, Jasmani etc etc. Keep English for Math & Science from Form One onwards.

Science and Maths should be taught in English for secondary school.
While the proposal for Form 1 to 3 be taught in bilingual - English and Malay,
To help students transition into English in Form 4 -
It should be noted loud and clear to Datuk Seri OTK,
I think you are out of touch on ground realities -
As for now and in the last 6 years since in the implementaions of PPSMI -
Science and Maths are been taught in Bahasa Melayu - only the text books are in English.
If you have children in Std 1 to 6 in national schools,
ask them how the teachers are teaching -
I have asked them and they told me the same story over and over -
Teachers teaching Science and Maths in national schools are using BM.
The same thing is happening in Form 1 to 5,
teachers are using Bahasa Melayu to teach Science and Maths,
Yes the text books are in English, but for the sake of Malay students - BM is used by most teachers.
Haven't you seen the results of the survey -
only 9pc of teachers in primary schools can use English for these two subjects.
Only 19pc of teachers in secondary schools can use English.
They know how to use English - but in actual facts - they are not using English,
even in urban areas, these teachers are using BM to teach these two subjects.
This is why I don't understand the Malay nationalists and vernacular educationists -
what are they fighting for -
it generally understood they are fighting for PPSMI be abolished for primary schools only.
But secondary these subjects should remain in English - in name only and in text books.

They are our future. In most cases , people will go into misfits if there do not have a direction and knowledge. Knowledge is mostly obtained from English books.
All the poor and the middle class children will suffer in future when their children grows up in later years to know that MCA did not support the move to retain English as the medium of instructions.

What is transition in Form 1 to 3 need to use billingual Malay+English for math & science, this looks like applicable for national school where transition is from Malay to English, whereas SRJK (C), transition is from Mandarin to other language! He got brain?

Malaysia's advantage in the English language versus other countries have already been destroyed. It will take ages to get back to a competitive advantage and that is assuming the other countries are standing still.
As long as BN/UMNO keeps working on the assumption that the Bumiputras are incapable and uncompetitive, this situation will persist.
How did BN/UMNO arrive at this view of the Bumiputras in the first place?
I have not met any bumiputras who are less capable than others but I have certainly met bumiputras with a low self-esteem and confidence due to BN/UMNO's constant reminder of their lack of ability.
