KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — Electricity tariffs will be raised as the government looks to cut subsidies on fuel prices, a newspaper reported today, quoting a minister.
“Fuel price movements are the main factors for the electricity tariff revision,” Energy Minister Peter Chin was quoted as saying in the Business Times newspaper.
Global oil prices recently dropped to below US$60 (RM212) per barrel, after reaching a dizzying height of US$147 (RM520) last year.
He did not say when the increase in tariffs would take place.
Much of the electricity generated in Malaysia uses natural gas subsidised by the government.National power company Tenaga Nasional had submitted a proposal for a tariff review to the government at the end of April.
The review in electricity tariffs was due this month but was postponed. — Reuters

What movements in fuel prices?! Fuel prices dipped and then went back up... so, in essence, it remained status quo. And since when have fuel prices changed in Malaysia with the government's subsidies?!

If the fuel price has dropped, which it has since the financial crisis. What logical reason can our ministry have to increase the electricity rates!

The rakyat are suffering so much from the global economic downturn and the rampant corruption and wastage AND now still have to pay up our last few ringgit so that the IPPs can be fattened further. Is there any justice and hope for the common folks in this country ? Whose side is the govt on ? During GEs and by elections, there are so many promises. But during other times, it is the GLCs and corporations who continue with their unchecked exploitation and craze for money and it is always the rakyat who are the victims.

oh my god....electricity hike now after fares hike???? what the hell is going on??? isn't it true fuel has gone down tremendously but there's still a hike???
doesn't this boozer energy minister knows that by hiking electricity, all consumers goods will be automatically HIKED TOO like from the cheap mee maggie to building materials ?? manufacturing industries will also have to pass the cost to the consumers in the end!!!!
if boozer say government plans to cut off subsidies, is it because those subsidies should go to 'individuals account' instead?? why not stand up and fight for the cause of the rakyat. a suggestion to boozer is to convince the government to reduce the in-takes of national training and has that cost to transfer to better use like electricity.
the rakyat is not ready to absorb industries costs YET because the average income of us is still very LOW and can hardly SAVE money in the bank at the of the day. we are not like boozer or any high position bn members who to them, these costs are like peanuts to their pockets.

Price of petroleum goes down but electricity prices goes up where is the bloody logic? It seems that electricity prices will go up regardless of the market forces. Thank you umno bn for your "concern" about the well being of your citizens. We will surely continue to vote for you so that we can be screwed forever by your corrupt and unaccountable government.

Yes, fuel is and will continue to be the main cost components in electrical power generation and distribution.
No, to tariff increase as fuel is not the only factor. TNB should seriously employ an effective strategy to curb power losses as much of what is being produced is currently loss during distribution, mainly due to inefficiency.

For those who were going "yippee" at Najib's recent bag of goodies, which included discount on toll rates......told ya.
This BN gov'n does not give free hand-outs. They "give" you "concession" from one pocket, only to screw you from another.
So, this is how all your purported toll "discounts" will be "re-collected".

i hope that someone can explain to me how come the electricity tariffs will go up even after the gov cut their subsidies on fuel prices because compare to the last time, tnb gave the reason for them to increase the tariff is because the fuel price is too high (around $150 per barrel). but now, the fuel price is around $60 per barrel. so how come they want to increase the price now since the fuel price is much lower now compared to 2 or 3 years ago?

Kelesaan penumpang...tempat duduk sempit..kaki kebas selalu, tiada tv, lambat sampai & pemandu kurang prihatin utk periksa penumpang sebelum bertolak (tempat rehat).
Kalau minyak akan naik balik..naik la tambang bus ye..siapa untung..kerajaan.

The UMNO/BN government is taking the easy way out. Instead of finding ways of reducing the tariffs and other charges, they simply increase and collect more money.
Unfortunately the ignorant kampung folks are not aware of the UMNO/BN government sucking their blood, thus they still vote for the regime.

Wait, they give us a 20% discount on toll... then they raise city bus, express bus, school bus, taxi, and electricity??? When oil prices have dropped compared to last year?
If you own an express bus company (which also means you're politically connected)... this is a double bonanza; discount on toll, and squeezing your passengers .
If you drive and have a family, you pay 20% less for toll, but pay more on taxi, school bus, and the electric bill! Lets not mention that food will go up, because of higher electricity costs.
Giving you pennies, then stealing your dollars.
Thanks a lot Barang Naik!
